Bit of an epic!
Nice build up.

Interesting textures and instrumentation. For me the vox seem to get a little lost now and again.

But a really good melody that stays with you.

Great lyrics as well - especially for Feb 14th.

Nice,
not my usual bag the old sentimental ballad, but hey its Valentines Day so I will take a break from being a sourpuss
and give this two big thumbs up.I like the variation as it builds up from piano and vocal to a fuller but controlled drum gtr et al.
I also like the fact that it reminds me of something which is so elusive that the originality shines thru.....if you get what I mean,it's a compliment anyway.Good one ,enjoyed it.

Leonard that can sing...
You're sounding a little like Leonard Cohen here but a Leonard that can sing. When the strings come in the distance you give the vocal starts to lose the vocal, but I can sort of understand why you add in the reverb there with the big refrain.

Now for the bad news: at 3:10, 4:40 and 5:20 it's most definitely distorted and you need to remix this, as it's quite a lovely song, but those parts render it unlistenable just for that reason. Just take your master level down as that's probably all it needs. It'll sound la little quiet at the start but it'll build up enough and keep the dramatic dynamic quality that the chorus has now, but it's solidly distorted in those parts. When it started I thought the overall volume was a bit loud for the basically quiet piano ballad that you set it up as.

You write such good songs. There's a note in the piano when you're singing "find you next to me" that sounds a little off to my ear, but maybe that's intentional as it's consistent. Like a major-minor modulation that gives a little sense of unease, very clever! What a nice song!

very detailed comment thanks Jim - aye its true the mixing sometimes takes up longer than the songwriting bit.i dont think turnin the master down will help much as i was definately aware stuff was distorting when i was recording it lol,but had plagued the environment with my caterwauling quite enuf by then - i must listen to leonard cohen! cheers jim - rich

I wondered
why you'd chosen to sing in such a low register initially and then I understood as the song progressed and you sang in all those other registers (not an easy thing to do). It's a great original song and sounds as though it could belong in a stage musical. Great performance Richard in all departments...... and nice to see you around again, cheers M

I really admire the songwriting here--lyrics, great melody, movement between parts, arrangement. Among the best I've heard so far at MJ. You have a real talent for songwriting and arranging. This really took me away, worked on a number of levels. Congrats!

This is
a wonderful song Rich - I can really imagine this as a hit. Wonderful intricate arrangement and fabulous vocals.
It is a bit of a shame though about the distortion in the louder parts.

Cheers Len - I'm lookin at the distortion thing - well listenin to it - on headphones n speakers i dont hear any - there is a guitar in it that er is distorted by very devious means and maybe thats what it is - but it generally prob comes down to me using minimalist in terms of price and quality equipment - have never been one for investing in equipment as i sorta - i dunno if this makes any sense to anyone out there - never feel limited by shit equipment - I'd record summat on a gramphone if it ad a record button,but yeah i see how it could be polished up.I do appreciate the constructive crit - only trouble is I'm never sure wot to do bout it - i could mes around with the levels or pay to go to a studio,but i spose i dont have that much belief in the quality of the recording - only to getting some kind of message in a diary if u know wot i mean.I used to get really bored at studios waiting for people to perfect everything.. - if I was on Garageband i'd pretty much offer everything I record - out to be mixed but i fear my base levels would be already flawed - its like - if you put me in a hi-tech cutting edge studio I'd suddenly feel like i was in surgery rather than a music room.. - then again if i was more financialy successful i'd set up a jethro tull style studio in a barn somwhere lol - but i'm not a very polished person and all that expensive stuff wouldnt feel like mine till it ad a few fag burns in it.Soz dont mean to be disrespectful to those who have worked their bollocks off to get a decent set-up.

You would
never know that you haven't spent money as your recordings always sound top notch to me, just shows how good your natural talent is. This is a wonderful song and the production is great, it's just in those couple of louder places - it probably is just a tad too much distortion on the guitar as you say. I'm really sorry if I seemed to be nitpicking, I very, very, very rarely say anything like this in comments, it's just that this is such a great song. Downloaded. Thanks.

I'm a sap for this stuff. Just love a sweet ballad. The distortion doesn't really bother me. It just sounds like the 'acoustic through a marshall' sound you do every now and again. It's just very 'paddler'! The main vox do get washed away a bit in the sea of reverb and harmonies, but I see it more as a wall of lushy-mushiness, and it kinda works really.

Wonderful song full of emotions. You have such a gift for that. The production is wonderful too. I would make one suggestion. The fuzz guitar (comes in before the last verse?) came through on my speakers as high frequency distortion and did not add anything to the mix. I would change that. Everything else is magnificent. Your music is the kind that reaches right into the soul. That is so very special.

Soul Tap.
It's music like this that makes people ponder the power of music. There is something new and unique here that I've never heard before. So unique in fact that even though I can't put my finger in it I'm not sure I liked it at first. But as the song progressed I realized how important the early approach was to fitting into the theme and the build up. With the second listen all my hesitancy was gone and I'm totally digging it.

Nothing new from me as far as critiques go, but this song is special enough that I feel I should reiterate. I don't know if it's the bass or a guitar but there is some serious clipping going on to the point of distraction. I'd seriously consider re-doing that part.

The other thing is the hiss you are getting out of the mic on the quiet parts at the beginning. That part is so subtle and tender that the hiss really stands out. If you listen around 1:30 you can hear the silence between the end of the vocal "...your side" and when the acoustic kicks in. Not sure what to do about it. Short of re-recording that stuff perhaps you could leave the hiss in so it doesn't sound as obvious when it comes back in.

But those are just distractions. I pointed them out because this is a really special piece of music that deserves all the attention to detail it can get.

Awesome job man, it's transcendent.

An epic master piece. One of the best things I've heard here.
Is the distortion starting at 3.03 a distorted guitar? If so i think it's a bit too over powering for this beautiful ballad. Still great though.

well
right after you posted this, i was on my way out the door so downloaded to listen on the iPod. fell in love with it and listened over and over again. then i remembered i hadn't faved or commented so I came back to do so...decided to push the play button, got lost in the song and forgot to comment AGAIN. so here i am for my 3rd visit to the page and i'm on probably my 25th listen of the song. i love how you start your vocals in the lower register, then slowly layer on the higher harmonies. gorgeous piano and the guitars and drums, strings come in perfectly. just an incredible song, well structured and put together. just beautiful.

The good songs
A good melody, a good chord progression, something interesting happening along the way to keep the spark alive... You have it all.

You play your instruments so well and professional that it leaves me listening to the music instead of getting hung up on a strange sounding guitar or a mix not quite set. This is one of those good songs I'd like to play over and over again :)
