The Song That Never Was- Imogen Heap remix

Description
Imogen Heap offered her vocal tracks up for free for remixing here as a benefit on twitter and I decided to take a crack at it. I wanted to do something a little different, using acoustic guitar and mandolin to give it a more contemporary folk feel. I play all the instruments here and did this sort of quick, but I'm pretty happy with it. I hope it's okay that I put it up here, but it's for a good cause and everyone should go and donate. It should show up on the twefestival site soon but here it is for a preview for MacJams.
Thanks estellie for pointing this out!

yes Jim
I'd be happy too.... you've captured magic here... this is what we're always shooting for, in my opinion... this is pure magic... i have no idea who this is... but this certainly shows your producer chops... this is so moving

This song definitely *is*
Beautiful job on this, Jim. As always, your sound is first rate, and your mix is flawless. Your choice of instrumentation suits the song and the vocals perfectly. Really well done, which is no surprise. This goes in the iPod - thank you.

Thanks!
The drums are EZ Drummer Nashville kit, using some edited Groove Monkee midi grooves, and then I lay in some Orchestra Timpani. I love working with EZ Drummer, and this is a"snares" off kit, which felt right to me.
Thanks a lot for listening!

smooth
i like the smooth mood to this - it brings out Imogen's voice nicely.

thanks

It's so cool that Imogen did this. A very cool artist, she.

Works really well Jim
love the sounds you have come up with for this - man you're fast, I haven't even opened a logic file with Imogen's tracks yet!

What you've done is really outstanding. If I had to pick a nit, it would be that I'd like to hear Imogen's vocals quite a bit more in the mix - a personal preference only. The way you spread instruments around the sound stage is pretty near flawless in my 'phones!

Hmm, I'd better have a better listen to Imogen's tracks now I guess :)

Great
Lovely voice - good song - great production

I really love EZ Drums as well - I can't wait to get a higher spec computer because they suck my MacBook dry, but they sound great and are really flexible -

Good stuff,
Phil

silk
such a wonderful striking backdrop you've created. The drums in particular just light up the track in a warm and fuzzy way. Careful that the A&R suits don't kidnap you away from us once they hear this. brilliant stuff Jim

I just thinking that.
And then I went back to listen to the Imogen Heap CD that I have and I don't think she uses any acoustic instruments, and this being rife with things with strings, so I don't know if this is going to fit into the Heap oevre too well.

Excellent arrangement Jim
and wonderful playing. I really like what you did with the percussion - and the bass has great movement. I can't imagine how you did this quickly - I'd be trying to figure out the bass line for a week.

thanks!
The bass part probably has a few mistakes in it, but I didn't do any of my usual tweaks to fix things, just played this live. I have this old no-name Hofner copy violin bass I got for 5 bucks at a yard sale on my birthday and it's my favorite bass ever. I slapped a set of flatwound strings on it and it's really mellow sounding and easy to play.

Nice
This is lovely. Great vocal performance, and the music is great - a terrific arrangement and the instruments are very nicely done. Everything complements everything else, adding up to a warm bath of a sound that just washes over the listener. Very cool. Kudos to you both. Nicely done. Peace.

The Song That Never Was
wow Jim - this is ALSO such a cool iteration of the IH tracks. Love the "folky" feel with your instrument choices, and you just are so good - I've never heard anything from you that wasn't top notch. No exception here! Thanks!

thanks!
I'm just doing what comes naturally. I actually think I could have gone in another direction, but this is sort of how I work these days. It's pretty folky, but I just love playing my mandolin these days and I've been trying to get around to recording more acoustic guitar music, and when this came along, it was a good opportunity to combine those things. Thanks for your kind words!

Oh Jim,
This is fantastic. I had this beautiful guitar part to add to my version of "The Song That Never Was," but I wasn't good enough to play it to do the production of her vocals justice...alas. I have a lot of growing to do before taking on a project like this, as you have done so brilliantly, but I'm happy just to play around with it.

And I loved hearing MacJams versions of it. In her latest video blog, Imogen talks about wanting to compile her favorite versions of it onto an EP (with the permission of the musicians in question).

I had no idea someone else did this
know one said anything... you didn't even toot your own horn, Jim! Well..., I would have restrained as well. - It looks like you did yours weeks before I did mine... So this means that possibly, I'm not the one inviting folks to the IH party... Okay!... well then...

Fat, warm, thick/dense, but not crowded and plenty sweet enough... - these are the words that come to mind while listening. Beautiful work, Jim! You know, sir, before you nominated me the king of dissonance the other day on my song page, I had you as president of of the "D" club. Clearly, nothing of the sort screams as being true here, though. And now I'm wondering why I had you pegged as such. Maybe it was some of your earlier stuff or, maybe it just happened to be the tunes that I choose to listen to at the time. Or maybe..., just maybe these words will become a part of "Ehibit A" in being another well documented example of the pureness of my insanity...

Thanks Jim!

Off to riffle through what I believe to be is, "your world of dissonance" because, ya know....

ps So, have there been other takes of Miss Heap's, "song that apparently was before I came along"? Guess I do a search

I have been playing music a long time. When I was growing up my brothers had a band called the Regal Tones which was quite popular in our little town in upstate New York State. They got bitten by the music bug and later went on to found the p... [see more]
