Description
This is a new version of a song I posted in November of last year. Joe (J A Stewart) and guygrooves as well as a few others gave me some good ideas and thoughts about ways to make this a better song and this version is a result of their kind attention to detail and their suggestions.

In this mix I've changed some of the instrumentation and the feel of the song.

Before I add some harmony parts to it, I thought I see about getting some more comments and suggestions on it. So fire away with your thoughts. suggestions, and ideas for further improvements, they are all very much welcome.

Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy 'The Only Time"

Key of A 90 bpm

Verse 1

I been working in this steel mill, nigh on twenty year

Workin' like a hungry dog, spittin' blood and tears

Got my family to keep goin', thru the hard times and the strife

It's an all American story, it's the story of my life.

Verse 2

Well my daddy came be for me, working in this mill

He showed me what it took to live, and I remember still

How he taught me how to fish and hunt, he taught me what was right

He said an good man doesn't need to run, or go out an pick a fight

Chorus

The only time I saw my daddy cry, was when my mamma said her last goodbye

He took her hand and gave her a smile, said I'll see you on the other side

But I could tell it did not ease the strain, of watchin' mamma lyin' there in pain

Then he kissed her on the cheek and said goodbye, and was never the same

Verse 3

My daddy's gone and I'm the family's man

It's my turn to teach my son, to help him understand

That the the only thing you really own, is your in teg ri ty (integrity)

I'm working in this Steel Mill, raisin' up my family

Thanks again for listening and the kind words Feter.

I'm glad you enjoyed the song my friend and I certainly appreciate the lovely comment you left me about it. The Roger Whittaker part might be stretching it a bit, but I'll just take it anyway and say thank you.

Thank you Jack
Since I plan on putting this on my CD when I get ready to release it I want it perfect. It's not there yet, but it's getting close.

Next I'll add some harmony parts and then the final tweaking to get it in Master condition.

Thanks again Jack for your kind words, they mean a lot to me my friend,

steel mill
oh wow this is good man. really, really good. love your voice and your phrasing. You've got all the traditional ingredients there but the way it's composed and played it sounds new - especially the steel and distorted rhythm guitar. there is very little truly good country out here on MJ and so this was a great find. Downloaded, thanks!

This is great; you made some good changes here, and this sounds very good. I still love the lyrics of this one so much, a real narrative, expresssing lives in music. Your voice sounds great here, experienced and rich with feeling. Very cool. Hope you do the harmonies sometime. Let me know! Nice job, my friend. Peace.

Well, it's getting there. Now for the harmony parts and the final mastering. I always have trouble doing the harmonies, they're the hardest part for me. I can get them done, but it is a process I really have to work at.

Thanks again for all you help and encouragement my friend. I rely on your musical sense to help me find my way sometimes, and you never fail me.

Be well and be cool David,

Dude
your voice is so smooth and perfect for country :) Im jealous....belive Id be singing country if I had the voice for it . Loved the violin and slide . I just put up a song I think youd particularly "get" an Ode to Ernie Ford ;) Love your music man ! This sounds great ..nice production .

Thanx for the download :)

Thanks Benny
I'll go have a listen before the night is out. I always liked Ernie Ford, so it's gotta be a cool song.

Thanks for the great comments Benny, I'm glad you liked the song.

But it doesn't take a special kind of voice to do Country. You should write yourself a Country song just for fun of it, and put together some tracks for it.

You just might surprise yourself Benny. As good as you do other music, I have the feeling you'd give a Country song the same attention to detail, so I say go for it. You've got nothing to lose.

Be well and be cool my friend, and thanks again,

Ed

I thought I had...
left a comment a few days ago Ed but I must have forgot to hit the Post button. This is excellent brother. I love the song and the mix and the Merle feel to it. Great Job!! I am at a loss for how this could be improved. It really shines, the previous version was very good but this is great man.
Peace

Yeah, I saw you had fav'd it but then no comment. It's all a part of getting old my friend, you'll get used to it. ;-)

That's what I needed to hear Guy. This is going on my CD when I finally get all the songs ready, and I kind of wanted to run it by you and Joe to see if I'd smoothed it out and fixed it. I still like the other version too, but I think these back tracks actually do fit the lyrics better.

Thanks again for coming back to it to leave the great comment my friend, I really appreciate the help.

Be well and be cool, Guy

Well you can take Ed outta the funk, but you can't take the funk outta Ed ;-) (and of course I mean that in a complimentary way). I wish I could help out with suggestions for your next mix, but I think this is pretty close to done. Great track!

First of all, some nice story telling, sad but good job. Steel and fiddle to my ears are right there, not to harsh, not to soft. With your rich vocals and a fine job mixing you got a winner! Killer Job.

I guess maybe I'm finally getting at learning how to use Logic, it's seems to be getting easier and better all the time. But you know how it is, you always want to get these babies more and more professional sounding with each new try.

Thanks again for listening Russ and for the critique. It really helps me to step away from my mixes and listen to them through other people's ears cause it keeps me from thinking I know what I'm doing when it's not right and I think it is. Helps to keep me honest too, if you know what I mean.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Hello Chris
Yes, the fiddles are loops and so is the Pedal Steel. I've tried to do both on my SY99 and have never been particularly successful with either. I guess there's just some things you can't fake.

Thanks for listening Chris and the great comments. Glad you liked the way it turned out.
