What You'd Be Like

Description
I came down with a wondrous illness inexplicably stole my voice.

After a week, my voice returned, so I captured the unique vibrato in this new song.

The song's rhetorical lyrics are actually something I asked myself recently:
What would I have been like had I not followed the path I had?
Wealthy? Famous? Dead?

I was going for with it was an old Western feel. A ghostly drifter, in search of something distant.

I enjoyed recording it and tried some new techniques. I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics
What You Would be Like

Do you ever wonder what you would be like,
If we'd never met on that blistery night?

A potful of gold?
The world's adoration, baby?
Tell me my dear, what you'd be like.

Do you ever stay up all through the night,
Questioning answers that were never quite right?

A pocketful of roses?
The worlds adulation, baby?
Tell me my dear, what you'd be like.

Well the sky gives permission to view the Milky Way
When I try to reason, you run away

Do you ever wonder where shadows sleep?
Inside our skin where they kill our sheep.

A plot full of bones?
The world's adoration, baby?
Tell me my dear, what you'd be like?

A plot full of bones?
The world's adulation, baby?
Tell me my dear, what you'd be like?

Good moments to capture, dark brooding, unusual for you, great submission, I like mandolin type solo...

but worth the wait - super recording - very open. I too like the 'mandolin' - Just don't leave it so long!

What You'd Be Like
that's a lot to go through for cool vibrato, but i'm sure glad you thought to hit the record button while it's with you. i'm another fan of the mandolin sounds, and the backing vocals are very effective. You're a trooper - hope you feel feel all the way better soon!

actually

Voice effect worked out pretty darn decent for the right western feel you talked about. That very last "what you'd be like?" had a different effect, kinda surprised at that. Hey, I can't sing on my best days....

The chord progression is bright, and the prose is spot on.

Yeah, that last line. I'm a big fan of the suspended final word. It's something that I borrowed from Pink Floyd's "Goodbye Cruel World" and something I've always been hypnotized by. It keeps the listener glued to the silence. It's a little disturbing, which I like. I think. ;)

Thank you, Harold, for taking the time and your thoughts! ~ Mark

Fabulous
Yipes, sorry to hear about the voice loss, Mark. I would be doing my nut if that happened to me. Your voice sounds great here though ... magnificently expressive.

Beauteous guitar playing which echoes early 70s Pink Floyd. Love the mandolin-style tremolo. Great songwriting and a very fine performance. I really enjoyed this. Welcome back!

Beautiful!
I find the redesign of the site makes it difficult to stumble upon new music (especially when I'm pressed for time), so: thanks for posting the forum thread that led me to this! This is a great song! Beautiful, haunting, really, really well done. The delivery on "....the Milky Waaay." is brilliant and the ending is just right..... Thank you.

Perfect amount of eerieness
Powerful song that creates a unique mood. I like the subtle layering of the background voices.

If I ever wondered where shadows sleep, I'd guess in this atmospheric song. Well done, Boris.
