Description
A little heavier than the usual jiguma offering, this is based on a TV series I watched over the past month or so. “Carla Cametti PI” was the name, and it was about a private investigator (CC) who seemed to have a death wish for no particular reason, and the dashing Italian/ Australian detective who was constantly there when she needed help from the strong arm of the law.

Not much else you need to know story wise.

Musically, this developed from a simple riff I developed trying to come to grips with all the sounds available on my new Vox amp, and escaped into the wild with the assistance of my reliable comrade in arms, rtcooper. Coop has been a little unwell lately, and I sent him this to add the lead track as a bit of occupational therapy – it does sound like you’re on the mend Coop!

Guitars are Strat (Coop), and Tele (me), the bass is my Fender Precision and the drums are pencilled midi based on a few crazy loops I found in my drum collection - there’s also some conga and shaker midi and some real tambourine.

I could add as an aside here that I’m half way through the Led Zeppelin biography “When Giants Walked The Earth”.

Not completely sure about posting this, but maybe it’s OK.

those drums
Very cool start with the busy drums. Bringing down the busy drumgroove when the guitars and stuff enters was a good choice in my opinion. To my taste I would strip of nearly every odd conga and hi-hat stroke, to tighten the groove much more when the song starts. It's a matter of taste of course, but I feel them steeling to much of the umph from the cool vocals and guitars.

There's some Clapton licks in the lead parts:)

Watching you...
Neil- an excellent rocking song... like the contrasting sounds of the strat and the tele. I'm also a believer in the Vox amps... I have the big 100 watt version (why I don't know) and really the variety of sounds you can get. Of course, I recently added a Fender Hot Rod deluxe all tube amp to my collection... one of these days I hope to use both on the same song.

Overall it's very cool groove... Love the vocal style on this one! Though I'm kind of in agreement with Thor that this could be even more guitar focused with more of a straight up drum track.

Speaking constructively...
...if I may...

Love the riff, and the drum track. Also the meter of the lyric - works really well.

there's something not quite about the bass though - IMHO. It's a wonderfully big sound, but to me it doesn't sit quite right with the guitar chords. Maybe it's simply that it's too loud? Or maybe slightly the wrong tone? I really don't know - but it sounds a bit odd to me....

I could be hearing something that isn't there - but it's just a thought.

Definitely some Led Zep in there, for sure!

Neil,
This is a different approach to your songs and I like it.I love the small main lick and the drums/percussion are solid. Also there's a good change in the later half of the song with your solo -very clear and smooth which I think really pulls the song together.

Hi Neil! I have NO idea what thor, adam and dolby said to you, i'm sure they're very good things to think about. To my nonprofessional, not-my-genre ears, this song is FABULOUS, i thoroughly enjoyed it, i'm listening again, and that's all i can say!

The drums, the drums!
Thanks for the comments Lena, Thor, Adam, Phil, Michael, KB, Dick and Karen.

I have to agree with Thor and Adam about the kit. This is one that started out as a bit of fun and then I decided to take it seriously as a one we could play in the band. I kind of threw it together and for a change, the drums didn't really get much thought. Maybe what the song needed from the kit was just going to be too hard to orchestrate.

Not sure what you're hearing in the bass Phil - we might have to disagree on that one - the bass is partly designed for me to be able to sing and play the bassline at the same time.

I think Coop's screaming Strat adds so much to this. I attempted to add leads, but everything just sounded wimpy in comparison.

Thanks for the listen and comments - I might think about a new version with revised drums sometime down the track.

I have a Daft Punk CD but haven't ever listened to it (my daughter left it here) - I'll try to listen today. Not a new direction really, although I am trying to write stuff that the band can play, and we now have a 3 piece offshoot, so simple chordy stuff may be more regularly appearing.

One of your very best my friend
this is a killer song, especially since it fits the story line so well. But aside from that, the meter and rhyme and the driving energy is just awesome. No worries about the new amp man that Vox sounds fantastic.

Great song, great vocal, great Vox, great Coop, and a fantastic mixing job. It doesn't get any better than this my friend.

I thought it might appeal to some of our (ahem) younger MJers rather than other more mature like yourself (and me for that matter). I'm pleased you liked it. The Vox is a wonderful little amp for my purposes - only problem is that there are so many choices that I'm having trouble figuring out a few that might become my main sounds. It is fun trying them all out though.

would have loved to play a solo guitar over this.
may I suggest to try a bit less reverb on the guitars, especially on the solo guitar. makes it stronger and gives more power, I think.
natural drums would have been nice, but good drummers are hard to find.

Nice one guys ..

that guitar riff was bugging me: reminds me of ZZ Top's "Legs" in some way .. bit slower...perhaps it's just me, but there the similarity ends. Well cool song chaps- excellent mixing too.

MUCH better than OK!
Everything comes together well in this energetic song. Love the whalin' Strat!

I know nothing about drums but I think they sound pretty good here. The beat combined with the guitar chords sort of reminds me of The Doobie Brothers, around the late '70s in their "Minute by Minute" album.

Excellent vocals fit the lyrics well.

I really, really like the extended instrumental in the last third!

But over all it's powerful... huge.... Im glad this didn't come with the usual instructions "turn it up"... I think your productions are consistently comprehensively excellent... you prol get tired of hearing me say it.... I like the lead guitar more when it is a wash of sound effects more than the stock blues licks.... very effective when it's a sound effect... that guitar lick that continually comes off the syncopated throb seems to rush a bit sometimes, it's sort of a "Stones" bluesy rock, so feel is every thing... I played this in my head a few times, and I would put that lick on the back of the beat.. milk it so to speak... when it rushes it looses the power of that feel... I liked the compression on the bass, and I thought it sounded full and pumping in my speakers..

Is this the debut of the vox amp?... I love those things... the vox has induced my to play a bit more electric than I have in recent years...

aside from the small nits... you're a pro... and I'm a bit intimidated with how much material you put out without the quality going down... you must have a mode that you just fall into that just works..

I like this song very much..I think the drums might be a little 'over the top', in my opinion...the song stands alone lyrically & instrumentally , without having to add so many extra beats... they're not necessarily adding extra interest to the song-rather they detract to what is a perfectly poignant song....

So there!

(I Still love it though!)

Well done. So well in fact that I'm now wondering about that vox amp myself. Next time I pick up a bit of gear, probably some time this year, I'll give it some serious thought. Which model is this? The only constructive thing I could say is yeah the drums may be a little busy at times, you could pull some out at least sometimes. And at 5 minutes this song is just a tad long for the kind of repetitive groove it has (for me). If it were my song I'd probably try to reign it in to 3 or 3.5, little longer if I had to. Leave 'em still wanting more. Oh, and I like the bass. I think some people are maybe uncomfortable with all the slide offs but I like 'em. Thanks.

I have the Vox VT-30 http://www.voxamps.com/uk/valvetronix/vt-series/ - I can highly recommend it. The only problem I have with it is finding the right sounds in a live setting - so much choice! - but I'm getting on top of it the longer I have it. Perfect small gig/rehearsal amp for me. I've heard a 50 watt version, and it also sounds amazing.

yeah this little heavier side...
I like. Hitting heavy on the repetitive pulsating chord thing and bass really works. And that little guitar run on the left is sweet. Who's your drummer? I'd like to hire him... ;) Watching you.... nice strat playing Coop! Reaching and finding some real cool riffs.

Neil and Coop this is seamless... a well woven rock song. I enjoyed it.
