Description
This song was written by Stuart Walker, my buddy from Macidol, who is also doing the RPM Challenge this year, and this is one of the songs he wrote for it. since I'm running short on songs for my entry, he told me I was free to cover any of his songs. This is pretty radically different from his version, but I'm sort of digging it... Maybe this embed thing will work, maybe it won't but here's his version:http//macidol.com/... src="http//macidol.com/... width="277" height="20"> I play dobro on his final version, but this link, (which only partially gets you there) is just an early version without my dobro.

Lyrics
Jimmy has a card and he shows it at the yard
and they let him come and work all day
when he comes home he throws the dog a bone
like he's throwing his heart away

Rosalee cooks, and serves it at the table
in the hope that he'll sit down and see
but when he comes home he has to roam
like that dog checks it's territory

First you learn to walk and then you learn to run
if you're lucky you learn to stand still
so you carry that load and get what you're owed
if you don't then somebody will

The Red Queen
One part Andy Griffith, one part Existential Angst, full of sadness outside the lines, a search for feeling deserving, and both the side longing and the claustrophobic side of simplicity. At once freeing and sad. Like the Red Queen who runs and runs but never gets anywhere. This really grew on me, as it progressed. I love your ability to make the ordinary special, to find the fresh spin, the unique perspective. Another thoughtful conceptual track. I'm glad Stuart suggested this.

interestingly
I have been listening to a version of "Fishin' Hole" the Andy Griffith theme song lately by Jon Rauhouse, a steel guitar player. He doesn't do the whistling part, but just plays the song straight. But there's a lot of nice whistling on the new Andrew Bird record that I've been listening to. I'm not that good a whistler and in fact have been really self concious about recording it because I always feel like I am making odd little grunting noises with my noise while whistling. But I think I avoided that here.

thanks!
This is a great compliment especially considering the source. I haven't been singing anywhere near enough, and I find it best not to force my unpracticed voice, so I was trying to focus on not trying too hard. If that makes any sense. I guess I succeeded in taking it down a couple notches here for a sort of after-hours feel this sort of meditation deserves.

laid back
Nice set up in the feel department, with that nice back and forth. Like sitting on a swing bench on a country store porch or at a country truck stop fill-up/mom-pop restaurant, with enough quiet elbow room to ponder things in life, just like the third person story your telling.

The whole tune works so well because you have just the right timbre and observational honesty, delivered with your voice. I could easily close my eyes and feel transported into a dimly lit folk club, hangin on every word.

Nice work Jim.

elegant
Convincing performance. You show your great musical skills without showing off in any way. Pure elegance. Your voice is perfect for this kind of tune. The whistling was cool — but I have a little doubt on how wise it is to do the out of tune sort of whistling though. Probably done on purpose to enhance the laid back, careless mood, IMHO it seemed a bit unnecessary...:)

Whoops!
The out of tune whistling isn't on purpose, and I guess I just didn't notice it. I got a note from Tobin about it too, and so I guess it's really out of tune, and my expectations of my whistling are so low that I just let that go by. I have a couple other takes of this that I could probably stick in there that might be more in tune. I did want to to feel pretty much like I was singing to myself while walking past the graveyard, except this music would be sort of in the background. When you're just walking down the street whistling, I'm not sure how much you're concerned with being in tune or not, but thanks for pointing out my musical laziness in this regard! There's other mistakes too, like parts where the bass sort of meanders and there's an extra repeat here and there of some of the changes, but I was in a rush to just capture it in a day's worth of learning the song and recording it.
