Lyrics
words and tune traditional
orchestration by Daniel Staniforth

The snows they melt the soonest
When the wind begins to sing
And the corn does ripen fastest
When frost is settling in
And when a lover tells to me
My face he'll soon forget
Before we part I'll wage a crown
He's fain to follow it yet

The snows they melt the soonest
When the wind begins to sing
And the swallow flies without a thought
As long as it is spring
And when spring goes and winter blows
My love he will be fain
For all his pride to follow me
Across the raging main

The snows they melt the soonest
When the wind begins to sing
And the bee that flew when summer shone
In winter has no sting
And I see my lover's anger melt
Between the night and the morn
So it's surely not a harder thing
To melt a lover's scorn

So don't you bid me farewell love
No farewell I'll receive
For you will lie with me my love
Then kiss and take your leave
And I'll wait here till the moorcock calls
And the martin takes the wing
For the snows they melt the soonest
When the winds begin to sing

Olde England...
...The mystical fogs and damps and medieval England seep through this delicate song. I suppose there's some magic you've used (beyond your wonderful voice) to create the exact mirror that is so haunting in this song. You've very effectively used the minimalist approach to this song. Just beautiful...The lyrics, while coupled to a really (REALLY!) somber tune, also suggest hope for a better day...At least that's what I get. ... You are, no doubt, becoming the scion for this ancient music -- a real treasure, you AND the music.
Peace.

Thank you so much for a lovely comment, Paul. Being the scion for these old songs is certainly my aim. All the credit for the understated arrangement and the cleverly matched mirror voice must go to Daniel. I just sent him a dry vocal track with carte blanche to work his imagination on it, and this is what he sent back.

Another great collaboration
and very different to your original version (which, despite some hiss, is still a super performance). You two are working brilliantly together. Super confident vocals and lovely arrangement from Daniel.

Thanks Peter, I'm very glad you think so. I blush to listen to my previous version ... it was the second song I ever posted on MJ and is left there as a reminder of how far I've come in four years (and how much better I sound with a decent audio interface). I take it as a great compliment that you've delved so far into my back catalogue!

An excellent work
Gorgeous vocals against a spare and haunting orchestration - which seems perfectly fitting - make for an outstanding version of this traditional tune, imho. Thank you both; I will enjoy this muchly.

I thought I'd share these comments...
Everything in this piece is controlled by the morning wind... not an angry wind... but a current that stirs the seasons inside and out... Starting with the reeds... the eddies and sways are very slightly off beat with the incoming voice. Faint strings in octaves supply the windswept fields with subtle fades. The singer sings into the morn and the the wind blows her voice back to her. But the singer has a faint determination as a distant bodhran keeps pace with her....

such is the inspiration from Rebsie's voice...

Rebie
I always get these "Mists of Avalon" images when I hear these pieces.

I'll play this for my 11 year old. She LOVES this kind of music. She says it sounds so familiar....creepy. Maybe from another life???

Bravo,

Dave

I'm impressed that your daughter is into this music at age 11 ... she's doing better than me, it took me until my late teens. I hope she likes it.

Don't worry about your typing, I've been called by all sorts of variants many times. Rebie is fine!

Such a wonderful collab
You two weave such magic when you collaborate - It really does seem like you've been making music together for years - there is no 'mismatch' in this at all. Hauntingly beautiful.

Sounds great!
Now don't get me wrong on this one, I think you are both making some incredible music together, and I love your voice, but I much prefer the original 2004 version Rebsie (hiss and all). I prefer the pace and the simplicity of the earlier version. This that doesn't seem to capture the same eeriness and uncertainty you got before. The constant echo didn't grab me much either. Some nice orchestration Daniel

Would love a new version in the old style without the hiss and dropouts though ;)

Rebsie said 267 days ago (March 4th, 2009)

I'm impressed you've made the effort to listen to my early posts. Glad you think the old one transcends the line hiss. That's the way I've always done it when I've sung it live, and will do so again when I get the right chance. :)

But I love what Daniel did. It's very close to my original vision for the song, which was posted as an a cappella because I lacked the skill to make something like this out of it! I'm finding it very interesting to throw these vocal tracks at him and trust his imagination to do the rest. So far he's done me proud I think.

Thank you for your honesty Neil, I'd always rather have a sincere comment than flattery. It's very refreshing!

Very Nice!

Great voice as usual, and nice backing you've done Daniel.

The 'follow me' on the vocals is a good idea, but I think perhaps a bit overused. The wind can swirl and change the calling voice, bring it back - but often just swallows the sound

Regardless, I enjoyed this very much.

You take me to landscapes I have only seen in films and maybe in my dreams... Lord of the Rings comes to mind... The soundscape from Luna plays a strong part in bringing these images along. Very fine orchestration, and ditto solo performance Rebsie:)

Wonderful
Your voice and the sparse orchestration go very well together. It's a great combo. The electronic sounds seem to have a basis in real instruments (something sounds like bag pipes) but they have a somewhat thinner sound, which makes them stay nicely supportive of the vocals.

Eh, that vocal delay gets on my nerves after a while. It's cute, but to have it going on for 4 minutes is too much. I would have used it only for emphasis in certain places.
