Why?

Description
I wanted to do a Waltz (3/4 time) for ages, but there are precious little drums or none at all in that beat in the the garageband loops, so I did my own little loop. I hadn't a clue what it was going to be, but I wanted to try out my new guitar (rhythm only) and this song just seemed to fall into place. I would have liked a mouth organ accompaniment, but not having one or even able to play one, I went for the trusty emotional sounding accordion once again. Hope you like this easy listening song; just have a tissue ready LOL It does have a slight 'Old Shep' feel.

Lyrics
“Why ?”

I knew when I met you,
I’d never forget you,
And never would want you to go,
Though you were feeling the same as I,
Nothing prepared me for why…

My Heart would be breaking
‘Twas yours for the taking,
And truly, you stole it away,
All that you left was an empty shell,
Nothing prepared me for why…

Bridge.
You had to leave; I had to grieve,
Everything’s gone that we’d grown,
Lonely and lost; I’m paying the cost,
Like a dove you have flown.

You’d still be here,
Still calling me ‘Dear’,
Laughing at things that I’d say,
But here I stand with a tear in my eye,
And I’m still wondering why.

(Repeat bridge.)

God had to take you,
I’ll never forsake you,
And you’ll always be on my mind,
I know you’ll still feel the same as I,
But I’ll never understand why.

Repeat last verse x 2.
No, I’ll never understand why.

Maurice Vizard.

Maurice, you are a very good songwriter, and the instrumentation is just the right amount for these words. I love waltzes, even if they are sad. Thank you for sharing your heart with us, and I hope you get to see her again someday.

Hi Roxie,
Your very kind in your comment; thank you for listening. I too love a waltz, as it was always my favourite dance (quite a twinkle-toes I was too LOL), regards M

Your voice
Is so rich. I think you could sing the dictionary and make it sound great. A sad story with the everlasting question "Why". As I sit in silence after listening for the second time, my thoughts are with you, and I wonder, what if? A very thought prevokeing, well written song. Thank you.
Be well, Russ

Waltz
I have also wished to do a little 3/4 work, the few rhythms available didn't work for me. This is a nice simple waltz rhythm, keeps the feet dancing while your voice and guitar tell the story. Very much enjoyed this change of beat!

Thanks
Bill

Hi Bill
Yes, I wonder if it's because of the shortage of 3/4 drum beats that we don't hear as many waltzes here. There are some in the Jazz part of GB Loops, but they have heavy crashing cymbals which are fine for jazz as a modern slightly off beat waltz sound, but too heavy for a softer sound. I did play about with a bass drum and rim shot type of half time two beat waltz, but that was too harsh for this number. Thanks again, for listening, cheers M

Maurice I really am impressed by your story telling talent. It is so evident on every track you do. This is easy on the ears and tugs at the heart. Very nicely done ... indeed.

Expectations of romance
I love the choice of accordion, bringing to mind memories of romantic dinners and nostalgic expectations. Sounds like a song from a bygone era, further bring home the conceptual feeling of a moment lost. Everything works together, especially with your contextually authentic vocals. Very nice.

You
do write lovely songs Maurice, they are always good to hear and I do enjoy them!
Lovely words that tell a story, very sad but thats's what makes this great, and with the wonderful instrumentation it sounds superb. This is a wonderful piece of music that you play so well.
I love your warm vocals, they always sounds so good.
Very much enjoyed, thanks!

coming from you, that's a very much appreciated comment, though I didn't know where the lyrics were going when I started off...... they just seemed to pour out and follow naturally. I did wonder if it was going a bit too corny melancholy.... I hope not, regards M

A bit Elvis classic waltzing through. Good decision on making your own drum pattern simple but effective. and that accordion.... oh yeah!

Oh Dear!
I hope not, though I did realize after I'd recorded it, that the chord structure, especially the Chorus, is the same as my other song "Just Smile", which I did the year I joined here. It does have a familiar sound I agree and it would be a miracle if from time to time we weren't subconsciously influenced by other songs (after all I've been performing/singing for 55 yrs, so some things will have stuck LOL), but as far as I know this IS original. Though I do stand to be corrected, regards M

So Sorry DJ
for mis-construing your comment. I originally tried to 'Edit' the first posting, because for some unknown reason the accompanying artwork didn't show, but as I re-posted, the same thing happened again, and I presumed that the first post would have been over-written or deleted. I did see that it's posted twice on my Bio, but as someone else said, there doesn't seem to be a way to delete our own songs now. Again , I apologise for the mistake and thanks again for listening.... to both LOL, regards M

Its not reciprication
as I don't cotton to it. I listened to this long ago but was too lazy. I remember substituting a tarantella for the accordion and imagining myself with a big plate of spaghetti for some reason. Your stuff maintains a high quality. And makes me feel nostalgic , which I consider a very good thing, Cheers , Matthew

Ahhh....
It's good to hear you once again Maurice. You're in great voice.

Poignant lyrics.

"Old Shep"? Ha ha... Maybe just a little. (When I was a pre-pubescent Hank Snow's version of that old tune was a fave of mine...)

Very pretty. I love the Viennese-Gondola sound of the keys throughout. I've never been able to achieve that sound. How did you get it?

Be well old friend!

Well Nick
While it IS a midi instrument, I may well be able to play accordion, because it's still a keyboard, though I don't possess one. My grandfather used to play concertina (which i also like) and accordion, so maybe that's what draws me to the instrument. Glad you like this and thanks for the comment and fave, cheers M
