The Refugee Blues by Feter with Jiguma

Description
I was thinking about Feter and his interest in playing the blues and I came up with this tune; I had no lyrics so I sang "scat" to give Feter the melody line. I asked Feter to relate some of the "blues" his experience had given him and he came up with a work of art and a reminder of why the blues were invented. Feter wrote and sang the lyrics and provided a lead guitar for the break. I did some more noodling with the guitar based on the lyrics suggestion. Then Feter said what we needed was a "booming bass" and some "filling out" for the drums. Of course, I thought of Neil immediately and he very generously provided both and then did a mix for the tune. The mix provided us with the polish we were having difficulty achieving; thanks Neil. All in all, a very satisfying experience.

Lyrics
let me tell about the noodle
that doing noodling down in my brain

you would think I m fooling saying these
words to you but believe me they are true

killing time thinking hope is all I got
but here I am all so usless footloose
and alone
if you wanna sit and talk did it now
cos I think Im gonna wail all night long

*Getting dark and its getting long for me
I need to go and sleep right now
everytime I get worried about my words
I feel all so wrong and haul o my
how all down for a thing like me trying
to be someone in this bowl ...I said it bowl
if you wanna sit and talk did it now
cos I think Im gonna wail all night long

** if you wanna know what a refugee mean these days
beside an ID card and a stamp
come on and sit with me
sitting on this side walk at the embessies gates
and nothing came from these closed doors
and you running trying to catch up with the next mini bus
and cry to the moon
all night long
*** sad women camena and went and dark men thinkin
they believe theres no way in
I can live in anywhere but how I can keep on goin
makin hope like lil frown
I cant tell you WHyy.........
**Guitar**

*came from down hell hole blizard carrying
my bags of hope alone
thinkin the skin inside me can cook my way
my faith all into change my world
but here I am all alone facing my gates
of rock and steels walkin down the road
**
if you wanna sit and talk did it now
cos I think Im gonna wail all night long (X2)
you need to dig the refugee blues

Back at ya, Feter
The pleasure comes from seeing a concept come to life. Even though it took its own direction, the result was better than I expected in the first place. Thanks for playing along.

Thanks Joe and Feter
Joe sent me this to see if I could do some rhythm section stuff with it. Adding bass and drums seemed to take it quite a way from where it was - a real lot of fun to be involved on this with Joe and Feter, for whom I have a lot of admiration.

I think this must be very close to being Feter's best song here at MJ - it's certainly my favourite of his - and his guitar playing (there's that Strat again) sounds pretty hot also. Strong vocal, and some incredible lyrics (especially considering that English is very much a second language for Feter): "came from down hell hole blizard carrying
my bags of hope alone"!!!!!!!

Thanks for thinking of me guys.

Bass power!
The bass and drums take this song to an exponentially higher level. When you listen to the track I first sent you and the one you sent back, it is like night and day. Someday I'll learn how you do the drums, but that bass is just something I'll have get from you; perfect! I can think these things up, but you make it happen, and almost overnight.
After hearing Feter's lyrics, I knew I needed help to do the effort justice. The drums sound professional and I love the mix on the guitars, you really brought the blues power to the fore. Thanks Neil, you are one generous guy!
Cheers,
Joe

Wow, I liked this double!
I didn't see the X and clicked again, oh, well. Joe, your sound bed is excellent, and Feter sings da blues with great clarity in this. Shades of Bobby, real nice. and the lead, oh, man, blew me away. Neil's bass and drum fills are perfect, and of course, the mixing is superb, as always. I hope you guys do more collabs like this.:-)

This was quite fulfilling as Feter accepted the notion I came up with so readily and the result was so good. Neil recognized the performance as genuine and I think he had fun doing this. Who can knock having fun? I also love the collab Feter did with you; quite nice.

point of focus

Amazing what all this talent can come up with when your eye's are on the target - kudos to all.

my only nit - it's a bit of a "wall of sound" with little dynamics left after all of the compression. Should have left some much more of the space in there between zero and clip.

Thanks Harold,
I'll keep that in mind as I try and get better. I had manipulated many of the tracks before I sent them to Neil ( I did not expect the offer to mix; he usually prefers to do any adjustments himself). So, live and learn, I should have contacted Neil earlier! Compression is something I have only used twice, and it shows, so thanks for the comment, it is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Joe

What a great place, eh? (Canadian border not far from here;-). Feter really nailed it. The tune is the result of a discussion in the chat room about Feter's recent reaquaintance with the blues. As busy as Neil is, he found time for us, and he had some attitude with that mix! Thanks for the listen my friend.

Nits wouldn't hurt....
after I heard your live recording I think I could learn a thing or two from you. I am glad that, for you, the point of the song came across; that was my primary intention from the start, and Feter shared well. I regretted some of my guitar that on occasion clashed with the vocal; I didn't hear it until after I posted. I am happy with the groove, but wouldn't mind hearing your band do a take on this;-)

Cheers,
Joe

Mr. Feter's Blues, with his friends
I am diggin' the refugee blues. I like the song, its sound, its execution, its power, and its message. And I hear a hint of humor amidst the hell.

Taking a situation like yours, Mr. Feter, and turning it into music is a gift for you and for us. Thank you.

This song is *very* effective. Well done, Joe and Neil. Much to be proud of here...

Collaboration...
It's always a gas, I don't know.. getting to know these guys and their sound may predispose to a certain type of writing. It's all possible when you believe that it is. Learning Feter's story and interacting with him in the chat room, I had a gut instinct that told me Feter had this in him. In the back of my mind was my previous experience with Neil and that prevented what I couldn't do from stopping me, because Neil is, well, he's Neil, and you really get the feeling that anything is possible after working with him. Neil had the talent not only to bring out the best in Feter's vocal and our guitars, but when the bass and drums came in, it was the feeling that, yes, that's exactly what it needed! Mentally, it was a live-jam-like feeling throughout this project; almost like being in the same room.

I think
the story here is really something special and brings legitimacy to the Dylan way of folk art. But more important it brings about the Feter experience. This is one great reason why it so important to have Feter here to tell it like it is and give us who are kind of on the outside looking in when we need to have more cultural experience than just the burbs type way of living.

Thanks Joe, Feter and Jig for giving me a very important cultural, musical experience that brings out why the www. can really bring people together !!!

True...
Feter's story is the driving reason for the appeal of this song. Neil's "driving wheel" bass lines don't hurt either. But the important thing is Feter just told us what he honestly knew and I think that gives the song a its soul. Thanks for dropping in Bill, appreciated.

Collabin' like having your own band!
Yes, this is what brings me back time and time again, collaborations that work out. Very gratetful to Neil for his talent on the bass and the mix; just tuned into the attitude and expressed it(maybe a bit of roadhouse in his history;-). The song wouldn't exist but for Feter's bold poetry and willingness to put it out there; his vocal laid it out. Me, I just had fun pluggin' along on the Alvarez(plugged into GB's virtual amp, what a gas!)

Thanks Shay,
It's an interesting freedom to just make the melody and leave the work of the words to another; had not done that before. Very much a satisfying result and much fun. The drums and bass are Sir Neil the Jiguma Man, and I love 'em too. He's a really great musician and very generous. We both were taken with the vocal and guitar Feter supplied and, speaking for myself, I found it credible and artistic.
I love your piano playing, btw. Thanks for the nice note.
