The Sea Captain

Description
A droning old ditty with weird psychosexual overtones.
I got it from a book of folksongs from New Brunswick, Canada - collected from a man whose father learned a lot of songs in lumber camps there. It is obviously a version of a British Isles folksong better known as the Maid on the Shore.

Lyrics
were my men crazy or were my men drunk
or were my men all in despair
for to let her away with her beauty so gay
and again she's a maid on the shore

... for they asked her to sing them a verse of a song
to drive away sorrow and care

...for she sang it so neat, so mild and so sweet,
she sang all the sailors to sleep

and when she got them all asleep, all alone in despair
it's with a bright sword that she cut off their heads
and paddled her boat to the shore.

murderous maiden
I really enjoy your folk songs. They're not something everybody would tackle and I like the loose, honest approach that you take. If you ever want some hillbilly backing vox on an Appalachian tune just let me know - that would be alot of fun.

cool
one thing I would like to tackle is an appalachian clawhammer banjo tune...
I used to play some banjo but I don't have one at the moment... when I get my hands on one I'm going to take you up on that offer!
thanks for dropping in!

Great work
Really like the looseness of the performance and the quality of your playing and singing. Reminds me a bit of The Incredible String Band - one of my all time faves.
Have you ever teamed up with Rebsie? Could be quite a wonderful adventure.

folky
I really like the trad folk, inspiration for this one came from the sublime Martin Carthy / Dave Swarbrick records. Rebsie is an awesome performer, might be a bit out of my league though... my stuff is more on the amateurish (aka "loose" ) side! :)

thanx for listenin bud!

I started the fiddle later in life so I struggle with it compared to playing the guitar. However, I enjoy playing it, so I thought I should post some tunes with fiddle. Glad you liked!

Super!
This is some good stuff! I've been listening to a lot of The Decemberists lately and I'm digging this. I love songs that have a good story. You should really check out their stuff if you haven't already! Great raw quality to this!

Sea chanty
I dig this. It really sounds like a band. Love the open tuning (drop D?) and the fiddle. I've been skirting the edges of the Old-Time scene here in Mpls/St. Paul for around 10 yrs. The power of the old music can't be beat. I just picked up an el cheapo open-back banjo. Posted one banjo tune (Wintersong). I like your stuff a lot. Collaborate some time?

I've heard that song where they sing "hang your head low" quite a few times... I think that's them isn't it? they sound like a good band, I will check out some more of their stuff.... thanks much for the listen!

Folk...
... as an Irishman I have a divine right to comment on folk songs, shanties, reels and drones! This is really lovely, full of melody and salty authenticity. The instrumentation is great but it's your heartfelt love of the material that shines through in your voice that gives this recording its true soul. Bravo.

I thought I had accidently put on an old Steeleye Span record or something.

Excellent trad tuneage my man. Just excellent!

thanks calchas. I'm definitely a big fan of steeleye span.
carthy and swarbrick played with them for a while I think - they were the main inspiration for how this was played (not near as good as them though)

Calchas said 231 days ago (April 9th, 2009)
Hey bro...
Martin might have played with Steeleye ever-so-briefly, in the early days, but I don't think Swarbrick did.

Peter Knight has always been SS's fiddler. Dave Swarbrick was Fairport Convention's original bowman.

Nevertheless, the influence is there in your tune, and I love it!

Authentic
Relic, you've got a very authentic sounding folk style. The combination of guitar and the violin doubling the melody with your voice makes for some great music.

Your voice reminds me a lot of Randy Stonehill, who I used to listen to a lot in the 80s. He had a very honest, organic vocal style, and you do as well.

I just listened to this
After your Zevatron song--my head is spinning from genre confusion... But this is also very nicely done: it feels totally organic, and I found myself listening with my "enjoyment" hat not my "critic" hat on. Is this just you and you alone? Love the fiddling.

Yeah it's just me but I didn't play the guitar and fiddle at the same time. :)
I hope to post some more fiddle stuff.
