Description
In 2004 we stayed with a friend a half hour outside of Paris and went to a nearby town called "Mantes-la-Jolie" ("pretty Mantes") for lunch, and despite being told it had a somewhat dangerous element amongst the young folks, we decided to take a walk across the bridge over the Seine. Sounds pretty idyllic I guess :)

As we headed to the west bank across the bridge, a tough looking young guy with an amazingly good-looking girl on each arm was strutting towards us. The closer he got, the more dangerous he looked, and the more apparent it became that the five of us were not going to be able to fit across the pathway at the same time - one thing was for sure, he wasn't going to step aside to let us through, or form a single file to give us some space. Eventually we had no choice but to step onto the busy road (I guess we could have jumped 10 metres into the Seine below, but that seemed a bit like overdoing it). Turned out he at least had a sense of humour in thanking us! All in all, a 60 second experience which I've somehow dragged out to 6:39 in song. Made quite an impression on me.

Interestingly our friend has recently moved to live in Mantes-la-Jolie, so we'll be staying there for four or five days in June. Hopefully we won’t encounter our “gangsta francaise” again – or any of his pals :)

Three Tele tracks, B3, bass and drums (midi, played in on the Yamaha PSR). It's a slow groove of a song with a nice finish (so hang in there).

Lyrics
Down That Street
© 2009 Neil Porter

When I first saw you walking down the street
You were tall and dark and cool and dressed just right
You had a lovely girl on either arm
You didn’t get them just with charm
When I first saw you walking down the street

You were tall and dark and dressed to kill
You were coming side by side
When I first saw you walking down that street
You were tall and dark with looks to kill
The path wasn’t that wide
When I first saw you walking down that street

As you got closer I could see you smile
Diamond studs and shoes that said “I got some style”
Heaps of gold that that showed your class
Clothes were sharp, shades as black as night

Instrumentals

You kept on coming walking down the street
Cars to my left, ten metres to the water on my right
And something told me there was more
To your story than I saw
Seemed a good time for me to be discreet

With lowered eyes I stepped out on the road
I guess I knew that you were sharp and dressed to kill
I heard you say “merci monsieur”
You smiled a friendly smile at me
As I was standing out there in the road

Ad lib outro:
When I first saw you walking down that street
I saw you truckin’ down that street
When I first saw you walking down that street
Truckin’ down that street
Those ladies looked real good but I
Couldn’t look ‘em in the eye
When I first saw you walking down that street
I thought if I looked too close
I could really really die
When I first saw you walking down that street

Thanks Feter!
I had a lot of fun with this. It was originally going to be just a backing track for some song the band was doing - so I could figure out a decent solo. It ended up a lot more than I'd expected.

a bit of a departure for the down under musicman.

Very Nice_____

Great mix. Love the B3 laying back in the mix. Guitars, Bass, Drums, all great. Nice reverb setting. The vocal sits very well in the mix.

Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,

I love the B3 sound - I used to play in a trio based around a really good B3 player. Not a great way to make friends in the band though - have you ever tried carrying an old-style B3 and Leslie up stairs? ;)

Nice to hear you enjoyed it.

YES!!

I played in a band for 6 years and our keyboard player not only had a B3 but around seven other synths and a rack full of even more modules and patch bays, mixer,etc... It was awesome but yes - HEAVY for sure.

Now we use one keyboard with a B3 patch (Kurzweil) and it sounds close but it's not a B3 for sure.

Thanks again Neil

It is interesting that your song sounds so upbeat in light of the slightly serious story behind it. But I guess in a way, the event had to be a bit surreal to you, which lends itself nicely to the style of this piece. Very goos production - very crisp and clear, and well mixed. Thank you for sharing this.

Hi Sigmund
Thanks for listening. One way I've found of overcoming difficult situations is to make light of them - hence the feel of this song. I was, at the time, very concerned for our safety.
Hopefully we won't meet this guy again.

big tuffy
I do mean the music of course. a lot of muscle in each instrument.

everything has a nice punch form the vocals to the cool bass and drum groove. the B3 sounds good as well.

most impressive is the guitar work, very snappy ............................... and dangerous.

your best in the combination description-music- lyrics. You in this really did an excellent job in making the tune make sense !

You are absolutely corrct about real life making the best songs. Most of my songs at MJ are based on real life experiences. Russ (mowguy) just posted a song with a verse based on two people looking at a photo - I love that sort of lyric, where you can focus on small things but say a lot.

I'm really enjoying playing guitar more and more - any improvement is probably due to the pressures of playing live with other guys I think. Nothing like playing along on rhythm and someone shouting out "solo Neil!" to lift your game.

My worst experience with a "piece of furniture" style organ was when we used to rehears at a friends place on the water in Sydney - there were a lot of steps (50 or more) down to where we played, and every Sunday we carried this organ down the steps and then back up again. The music was often fantastic, but we dreaded the end of the rehearsal :)
Glad you enjoyed the tune.

Hi Karen
The B3 is always something I try in a new song - often it doesn't work, but in this it just added something worthwhile. The "solo" section is how I like to play it - simple :) A lesson that lack of skill on an instrument doesn't necessarily mean you can't "play" it.

I agree about the length of the song. It was going to be a verse shorter, but I started doing the ad lib on the last verse and decided I liked it. I was hoping that the guitar would carry it through to the end, but some days I think it did and others I'm not so sure.

Anyway, it will be shorter on the CD.

Really glad you enjoyed it Dave - thanks for the ongoing support. I really appreciate it.

Tired from "catching up" yet? You must have a few days worth of stuff to listen to. :)

Its interesting and pleasing to read your comment, as I'm really trying hard to lift my game in guitar and production in particular.

I had a similar
experience last week in Daytona Beach - me and my son's family walking on the sidewalk to go out to eat down on the main drag; a group of 'folks' came walking the opposite way, my family fell behind me, I stepped all the way to the curb and turned my back against heavy traffic to get out of the way and the guy on my side knocked the shit out of my chest with his shoulder anyway, and never looked back.

They're not all good people, but this is a good song. Love the bass line especially, but the whole tune is sweet. I like the 'good vibe' experience with the story, maybe there's still hope for mankind.

great story
Well done Neil,
I had to laugh when I read that the gansta said "thank you".
But it`s logic, french people are very polite, and so was he! :D

Mix is pro, sounds good, a bit too brilliant in my ears.
The only thing that I criticize is the timing of the vocals.
I would like to hear it in a recurrent groove, a circular phrasing, more exactly on the beat.

Nicely done!

I.G.M.

jiguma said 3013 days ago (March 25th, 2009)
Hi Ingo
Thanks for the comment. The brilliant mix is something I'm becoming more aware of. I like things to sound "crisp", and so mix that way, but I've been aware for some time that I have a pretty solid high frequency hearing loss (too many years listening to loud guitarists I suspect). So, what I consider to be "crisp" may well be "too brilliant" for people who have looked after their years (or are considerably younger than I am). I'll be more aware of that in future. The vocal timing thing is .... well, a bit of a trademark I guess :) I tend to slip and slide around the beat whatever instrument I'm playing, so its not surprising I do it on vocals too. Another thing worth looking out for for sure.
I really appreciate reading a comment that makes me focus on things that need some tightening up.

Yes, the French can be very polite, even in unusual circumstances :)

Thanks for the visit and listen Ingo.

I know what you mean now
You told me about how a bass is supposed to drive a song.
It flows in this, it's tight and it's grooving from start to finish.

The drums are more realistic then what I've been using.
It's tight and it all works as a whole.

Thanks for sharing.

The Tele is a real revelation for me. It keeps getting more and more apart of how I want to sound. Just put some slightly heavier strings on it, and that's made such a huge impact on how it plays and sounds.

great track and so glad you've told the back story. i've been in some really bad neighborhoods in the area of Paris. almost doesn't make sense when you're surrounded by all that beauty. anyways, the song... are you playing your guitar through a real amp? sounds awesome (and great playing). i was just looking at your picture while listening to the song, and it made me think that this kind of reminds me of the grateful dead. i couldn't hear the bass at all on my little macbook speakers, but popped a set of headphones on and heard it great. excellent.

Yes, Paris is an interesting place. We stayed around 3 weeks at a friend's daughter's place near Montmartre and certainly met our fair share of "interestingly dangerous" people there as well. There's at least one more song about pickpockets with blades that I have to write some day :)

The guitar sound is a Logic Studio preset with some serious tweaking although I'm getting some equally dynamic and amazing sounds out of my Vox VT30 Valvetronix amp at rehearsals. I am amazed by Studio's preset choices though.

It would be pretty flat without the bass :)

Strange!
Cos In my headphones (I'll used my two pairs) your voice and only the voice track crunch to the left side... I don't like it like that, ya know I like your voice, and I can hear your voice clear in the middle but it's annoying my left ear, as it hide some of the instrument as well.

Have said that I love the bass-drum line in there with nice synth-organ and cool guitars licks... Be well

Kenta
I noticed a slight shift to the left in the vocal track also, despite having it panned dead centre - I thought it was my hearing (I'm swimming a lot lately and my ears are paying up. What I normally do is have two copies of the lead vocal track - one panned left around 5 and one panned right around 5 (with a tiny amount of delay on it). On this track I didn't do that (first time for quite a while), and maybe that has created a problem. I think that sometimes my Rode NT3 is a little sharp for vocals - although I mainly love the way it sounds on my voice.
I'll have a play with a few parameters and see if I can correct it.
Thanks for the use of your good ears Kenta! I appreciate it - even when it was a surprise.
:)

jiguma said 3014 days ago (March 24th, 2009)
I think
I found the problem Kenta - I use an Ozone preset (mainly EQ and reverb and a little exciter) )on my voice which has some inbuilt delay on the right channel, and somehow it seems to have cut the right channel a little in volume, sending most of the signal to the left. Have had a play with it and can get it more centred. A good lesson K - thanks!

Very nice groove!
Good good song! When my foot moves this much I'm generally going somewhere, but for this I would not part with my earphones. Loved every beat! Peace! Terry

This song
just punches its weight right from the start. Really great groove and superb mix. This actually reminds me a bit of Little Feat - doesn't get much better than that IMO.
I would love to find something to criticise but can't. Maybe in the future you could put in a deliberate mistake that we all have to find.
Cheers
Len

Thanks for the listen and special thanks for mentioning Little Feat, along with Steely Dan, one of my fav US bands. There is a deliberate error in this - just for you ;)

A little Neily Dan
you get the idea... transparent production, restrained tempo... slinky white man soul... all remenisent of some of my fav "Dan" stuff... this could easily be off their earlier albums... I can even hear Fagen's voice here... wonderful organ pad fill... and goodness Neil... that instrumental is perfect... I love that the break isn't a "Guitar solo" so much as an ensemble woven together...

you've done alot of good work here at MJ... I have to say this is my fav... such seasoned touches on so many different elements....

Yes! Neil the World Traveler!
First of all Neil that artwork is hilarious!! Now onto the song. This is probably your most polished piece Neil. The mix is wonderful. Love the B3, the guitar is tasty, the bass sits well in the mix, the vocal is clear, even the drums fit pretty good! There isn't a whole lot to critique here! Even though it was a longer song it kept trucking along at a nice pace. I was really wishing you would have ripped into a more traditional guitar solo at the end but I respect your artistic decision not to! Well done sir!

Thanks for dropping by Adam
The two things you mentioned were things that also crossed my mind: the length of the song and the potential for a ripper solo. However, even though I stuck with this version here, there may well be some significant modifications on the CD.

Thanks for being such a consistent listener to my stuff. One of the things I like so much about MJ is that people with musical styles so different (such as you and I) can enjoy each others posts as much as I enjoy yours and you seem to enjoy mine. I was there,but.....
I thought I left a comment but I must've muffed it up. Here's what I thought I said: Love that Tele; becoming a signature sound and a very welcome one. I won't be surprised if everyone wants a Tele trak from you on all their tunes. Also, this melody has, at times, an almost Canadian-Celtic-folk sound (another sound I love).... travel has its hazards, mate, be careful!
Cheers,
Joe

Well....
I sent you my comments already, but let me go on record on the page itself as really enjoying what you're doing with the Telecaster these days... You're managing to use more and different instruments and sound colors without getting your recordings sounding overfull, crowded or busy... Just enough and never too much.... Great slinkiness to this, Neil...

Thanks for dropping by - the organ is a Garage Band virtual instrument - "tonewheel organ - jazz" I think.

I'm glad you enjoyed this track - I use a "B3" sound a lot- a good example is on "my latest version of "Too Many Ghosts".

I hope your feelings about MacJams improve the more you get involved in the community - you will definitely learn a lot here and meet some very talented people.

Cheers from Oz,

Mantes la Jolie
Your roving musical reporter jiguma here, reporting back after a weekend in Mantes la Jolie. Please ignore EVERYTHING I said above about the place.

The incident itself happened as described, but our weekend there was probably one of the best, friendliest and most social weekends we've had in a while.

We met lots of local people there, and they were terrific. Went to a wonderful celtic music festival there - complete with ancient cathedral behind the stage. Saw a brilliant young jazz-rock band called Alonso Boa in a barge on the Seine, and ate and drank consistently well.

Didn't see or feel any aggro at all.

First impressions are not always correct it seems!
