Description
Every once in a while I'll run into someone that I've known or worked with over the past 20+ years. And usually I hear "You haven't changed a bit" or "you still look the same". Of course in mind I'm thinking oh I've been through the mill. But my response is usually "Soft lighting". But, when I think about it, I probably haven't changed all that much in a lot of ways.

I wanted this song to feel more like a live take as much as possible. I recorded the music in a afternoon. then added the vocals a few days later. Usually I would cut the lead in, but I thought it sounded interesting and set it up a bit.

Also, I would like to thank Michael 2 for the fake theremin synth settings and tips that I us on the bridge and outro

Lyrics
I'm Still The Same

she's not a girl who misses much
sometimes she's here sometimes not
she catches all the times you say
please excuse me I need a break
she says she knows me
I don't think so

ch:
I'm still the same
no matter what the world thinks of me
I'm not a sensible man
but I do okay
I'm still the same

stashing dreams in a pillowcase
saving them for a rainy day
lost are so many memories
sometimes they stay sometimes they fade
it doesn't bother me
or so I'm told

ch:
I'm still the same
no matter what the world thinks of me
I'm not a sensible man
but I do okay
I'm still the same

I could be someone else
I could be someone good
I could be myself

my years are not an open book
most of the pages have been torn
it is interesting to take a look
sometimes the pictures are better then the book
could you turn the page
I didn't think so

ch:
I'm still the same
no matter what the world thinks of me
I'm not a sensible man
but I do okay
I'm still the same

Cool mix
this song sounds great. Definitely sounds like a band jamming. Love the acoustic/electric blend on the guitars.

Thanks for posting this.

yeah, my goal was to make it live as possible. well as far as DAW can go with one person. So, no punch ins although i did cut out some electric guitar parts

it always starts out on a acoustic. when i figure out the chord progression I start hearing in my head the other parts. Makes it fast and easy to put something like this down. Plus, I know my pre-sets for most instruments, that helps a lot

agree with feter, kind of a beatlesque sound.
(the best kind of beatles - a lennon-style song with mccartneyesque bass playing!)
sounds great. I like the lyrics too.

Great Guitar!
Glad to see you used an SG on this one. Great sounding guitar.

As always you record the best sounding guitars. I love the lead you play after the line "but I do okay." Great tone and great notes.

I also liked the lyrics and the theremin was a cool touch.

I finally bought one a year ago, always wanted one. More versatile then I would of had thought. The theremin came about at the 24th hour, Michael2 was great about how to produce the sound

Warm and toasty
I can hear what others mean about the Beatles qualities ... though it's still most distinctively a Vic song. Beautiful tones and harmonics in a crystal clear production. Love the theremin and bass combination.

Your artwork is always a delight. Although I used to be a graphic designer I never mastered digital art to any great extent ... you have an exceptional flair for it. Love that toast!

I always wanted to be the fifth Beatle when I was growing up. Then I wanted to be in Blue Oyster Cult

I don't miss the old days of paste-ups, shoot stats and film and all the x-acto knife blade cuts. with graphic software life is a lot less messy

I was going to throw heaps of White Album accolades your way, then I saw everyone else beat me to it. THEN I thought, "to be compared to one of the best albums by the best album of all time, it needs to be said". I also side with Rebsie that this is still so much a Vic Holman song. Top notch in every conceivable way.

The performance is a little more loose than usual giving it that jam sound - mission accomplished. Same great Vic H flavor though. The unique voice is what brings me back, the stellar production doesn't hurt either.

hanging loose and going for it was the key. and liberating as well. I set up a scratch acoustic and vocal track. and jumped in from there on the rest of the tracks. I surprised myself that i was able to get the bass and vocals in one go.

The overall volume is quite hot Vic. Scared the hell out of me.

Now, the song is tremendous. You have a certain something to your songs that is so distinctive and can't be taught.

Enjoyed. And I'm about to hit the DL button. Thanks.

Holy crap!
Geez Vic...This is instantly my favorite tune ever by you bro.

Well done achieving that Beatles sound.

Cool use of e-bow during "I could be someone else," and in the fade out.

Love the anthemic lyrics, and your persuasive vocal delivery.

Yup. I like everything about this piece.

I'll have to put the ebow away for a while. I've used on the last 3 or 4 songs. that's what happens with a new toy.

I had been listening to the white album on my ipod and really have been paying attention to the production work on them. and figured "I could do something in that vain".

RE the White Album...
...it SHOWS bro (a GOOD thing).

I've been listening a lot to the early classic seven Moody Blues albums. Their influence will be evident on my soon-to be-posted "No Sorrow."

You do these so well Vic
Lennon , Harrison and Bowie (and is that Mr Starr on the drums?) all get a nod here, so I guess it has to be good :)

Some lovely chord changes in there and a lot of great guitars. The drums work particularly well here, although that open hat on 2 is a bit repetitious at times.

Very cool post Vic - one of your best.

we could call this a very, very late to the Lost Song Project from a year ago. The big idea on this was to go at it like a cloned vic band playing live. I do play the drums on 3 separate tracks. Tackling it all on one track would be almost impossible. I would of gone in and fixed some parts on the drums as well as a few other things. This is about as live as I can get for a one man band.

I've gotten to a point through trail and error where I now know what every instrument needs to be placed in the field and what plug-ins work the best for each track. So at the final mastering stage it just takes some level adjustments. and crossing my fingers of course.

It's about me...
...this song is! Though, I would imagine it's about most. Funny thing is, when I first heard the first few bars I thought, "sounds like Vic"... You know, every-now-and-again, you "break outta Vic" mode, but it's still, Vic breaking outta Vic mode and you know what..., it's always pretty much what I'm wanting hear when I show up to "see" what's goin on with... Vic! Thanks for putting yourself out for a listen. Nice production. I like the "not so polished" sound and it worked well on this, I think. I get that you have a polished approach to life and musically, you're clearly, a pretty polished dude... Though, ya know..., you could just be a master at shining things up however, it's all good on this end...

Until your next shine...

there's that old saying "no matter where you go, there you are".
Yeah, even if I or we or they try to put on new clothes we all still stand naked at the center of things. The songs in this case. not like in a dream where you show up to work in the buff and everyone is staring.

And of course who doesn't like shiny things? :-)

almost every song starts out with me kicking back in the evening with a acoustic. I'll just kind noodle around without thinking to much. If I come across something, like a riff and or part of a chord progression, that grabs me, then I will start fleshing it out. Then I might add a different section to break it up.

Then I just practice a couple nights and hear other parts that could go on top of it. Or improvise extra tracks over the basic tracks.

If something doesn't work in the end, it doesn't bother me to throw it out.

is a real stand out here for me Vic. I always expect and get wonderful guitars from you but that bass really drives it along. Great lyrical idea for a song. Wonderful musicianship and superb production (love that little touch right at the beginning to make it all sound live).

You sure have a NATURAL
rock voice, very intune. A great gift to have when your singing this type of stuff. PLus you have a great since of installation of sounds in rock form. You really have a strong forte in this field of rock endeavor. !

Amazing really ! I kinda think that you would be a great member of the Beatles during their hey day ! I'll bet you really would added alot., That and the kinks too :) !!!!

not a sensible man but I do ok and i'm not a fish. or whatever.
great line. my guess is that 99% of the people (men/women) posting here fall into that category, otherwise they wouldn't be spending so much time on an enterprise appreciated by so few.

Anyway your chord choices - how to explain...if my pop sensibilities were a fish, then your chords would be like a net...sometimes your chords pull me out of the water and I gasp for air and just when i think i'm going to die you put me back in the water. Wow. That is the worst analogy ever. That is just shit. What I mean is that you go off into prog territory and I cringe because I am NOT a prog guy and then you run right back into some sweet pop stuff and then you veer off into the weeds again but then right back to the pop etc. I'm always exhausted by the end of your songs lol. But in a good way, a challenging of perceptions way. Obviously I like it, because i keep coming back. But then i'm not a sensible man...

We can never really know another person completely.
Sometimes it's hard to know ourselves - yet we beat on - boats against the current (as F. Scott Fitzgerald put it...) To Thine Own Self Be True - always a good bit of wisdom = contentment with oneself. That and a few deep cleansing breaths, and counting to a hundred in Om 's - not ohms. : ) And they do say a picture is worth a thousand words - also they say actions speak louder than words. Too many freakin' cliches. : )

When the song started I thought it was a redo of something you posted before. "Still the Same" lol. Then I got into the tune and your notes and lyrics and dug where this is coming from.
