Description
Well, how I arrived here (and granted, I may not be there yet...) is a long story. First of all, I started to work on a cover of Supertramp's "Take The Long Way Home" and I got pretty far into it and had come up with some cool EZ Drummer drums to go along with my version, but I had the realization that it was totally wrong, the tempo was wrong and I needed to go in another direction entirely. I hid a bunch of those tracks rather than just trashing them and finished the song and it came out pretty good and will be in a Coverville Podcast March 28. You can check that out at the Coverville website or subscribe to the podcast for free in iTunes. It's a dandy and a great place to hear independent musicians doing covers.

But back to this song: after I finished it, I figured I'd take a look at the old tracks and they weren't too bad, so I salvaged those tracks and started a new project, using a similar title. I had no idea for words other than the chorus, but I'd done these Poems (you can find those on my artist page) recently from old books that I wrote 33 years ago and there were a couple of those that just needed minimal working to come into a pretty good set of verses if I do say so myself. I guess it is sort of about the intertwining that comes from establishing a relationship with a significant other, and it's really a lot more relevant now than when I wrote these words 33 years ago, now that I've actually done accomplished the right twining. I guess it's getting close to our 15th anniversary, so this is for Andrea.

Musically this is inspired a lot by Matthew Ryan and Strays Don't Sleep, music like that, wanting to do a really intimate whispered vocal with a lot of atmosphere. I sort of inexactly tried to harmonize and I probably ned to re-do the vocal tracks but I liked the loose feel of pretty much my first takes of these two vocals. The electric guitar took a little more work, and the acoustic was sort of easy. I used a lot of the free Kore Player sounds in the backgrounds of this, along with a little santoor that reminds me of a hammer dulcimer.

You know how it is when you start to work on a song and you can't get parts out of your head? Either I came up with a catchy chorus or it's just the repetition, but I hope you like it. Let me know what you think I need to fix, since this is sor of a quick mix, but I just wanted to get this one out there. Thanks!

Lyrics
Long Way Up

Just because
Just because, that's all
what comes
what comes between us
Is so complete
fingers in the glove
and again you ask
me why we are so close

It's a long way up
a long way up
It's a long way up
but we'll get there

It's a circus full
full of somersaults
I said I only want to cast
tumbling shadows in the dusk
Like you and me
tumbled into one
It's not exactly clean
It's all mixed up

It's a long way up
a long way up
It's a long way up
but we'll get there
(repeat)

somewhere
some why
somehow
sometime

silent shifting
in the scented night
just as constant as
an unease with life
kept in the pocket like
the jewel in the sleeve
a delicate note
played on a drums so light

It's a long way up
a long way up
It's a long way up
but we'll get there
(repeat)

A bit soft isn't it ;)
Nice one Jim. I've found myself in a similar process to what you describe here, although I usually do a cover of a song we do in the band so I can practice my parts.

This has a refreshing clarity to the production - laid back style (sounds great. Those wooden steel drums towards the end add unnecessarily clutter to me. Only other thing I'd change is to give the vocal a few more dB. They sometimes get lost in the instrumentation.

Very nice bit of work Jim.

Cheers,
Neil

Boy howdy!
You are probably right about the dB of the vocal. It's a delicate balance, though; see some of the comments below.

This is probably one of those songs that deserves the "listen to this loud in headphones" label, as it is on the quiet side.

very atmospheric
I like the slightly off-klter, handmade, but subtly groovin' spell you weave here. Lovely textures throughout. Maybe a tad busy at times, another mix wouldn't hurt, but a cool composition and sonic palette. Like your style, man.

So much awesomeness. I love Supertramp, so right there, kudos! Second, thanks for mentioning that podcast, I love good, original sounding covers, going to check it out for sure. (shameless plug for our unpolished cover of Zombie... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VtjjI1vQcI )
Third, this is just a good song. Solid, nice changes, smooth guitar. Very well done indeed, I've heard a few of your tunes now, and like them very much!

This is fantastic! I understand the "no covers" deal but I wish MJ would relax a little. I mean I think if they had a checkbox that said, "This is a cover, not for profit and this song will be glady pulled down if there are any issues with it" it seems like for most of us doing a cover would be ok. But I guess RIAA and others could get up in arms...

Anyway you always do such great work! This is really nice!

hmmm...
Actually, I really like the way this song came out much more than my cover of Supertramp. It's really more what I am into, and I'm glad I'm not doing covers all the time. Covers shouldn't be allowed here because no matter what the disclaimer was put on it, it would still be stealing money from the original copyright holder's pocket. The covers used on a music site that includes ads that generate revenue amounts to the music generating revenue, so that even though I personally am not making a profit, revenue is generated. Coverville pays the BMI and ASCAP and SESAC fees for the right to include covers, so that's really the right way to go with the posting of covers. Pay the fees.

Thanks for the comment. And check out the Coverville podcast if you like covers!

Relaxing, optimistic.
This sounds like a "stringsier" arrangement than others I recall you doing, although we I don't know your virtual discography enough by half. Full mix, but it sounds like there's good separation, so do't take that wrong. the "strings" in my head may be those relaxed harmonies... nice vibe. This may be a tune you just don't want fool with in terms of changing the composition any... it's a "delicate note," a moment recorded, that seems to be well conveyed.

Thanks a lot!
Maybe I shouldn't fool with it, but being a fool, I probably will. I do think I overdid the quietness of the vocal but I guess it works okay for this recording of the vocal. I do think I can perform it better, but at the same time I do like the looseness of this. Glad you mentioned the "delicate note" bit, since I really need to keep that in mind. The source of these words were really in daily meditations that weren't overly thought-out, but more felt, and that's what this song seeks to convey. The balance between the search for perfection and the acceptance and affirmation of the imperfection of this life.

Nice one Jim
Sweet tune - love the shimmering, loose feel to this throughout.

Cheers for the link to Coverville as well - been wondering if such a site exists like that for a while - I like what they're doing there.

Some nice little guitar licks here at the end as well - understated but very nice -
Cheers,
Phil

Subtly hooksome!
Gorgeously laid back with a stealthy killer hook. I like your vocal lots but could be more prominent in places and perhaps a bit more air in the arrangement (maybe just personal taste tho', I like it stark!).

Cheers

Thanks!
Gee, but I thought this was minimal. Something like 8 tracks only on this, I think. Drums, guitar, 3 synths, santoor, 2 vocals, acoustic guitar and electric guitar and bass. I guess that's 11 but the synths only come in in parts, so it's probably often no more than 8 at a time. I'm glad you thought the hook stealthy, since that's how it's sitting with me. Totally snuck up on me.
Thanks for such a nice comment!

I really like this..
A concept I totally identify with and well written too. Very friendly to the ear. I guess if I had to change anything I would make the percussion a little more edgy, maybe a wood block or something; something that could be identified as its own hook. I would strengthen the harmony idea, it's a good idea but I think it is a little dissonant; would like more of a major chord with the harmony, but maybe that's too sweet for others taste. Other than that, I'm downloading, so it can't be too bad;-). Another great mix that totally baffles me as to how you put such sweet sounds together. Very nice, Jim.

Gee thanks!
I really appreciate all the nice comments, as this song has really grown on me. I agree with most everything here. I think I need to re-do the vocal but now that the whole thing has settled in more, that should be a bit easier and I probably will try to do pretty much the same feel, with the softer whispery vocal since maybe people are responding to that in a good way. I had this a bit too low in the mix, I think but I had put a soft limiter on it which made it a bit too quiet. And the harmony could be improved because it definitely doesn't always go to the right place in this incarnation. I don't think I'll make it much edgier in terms of the percussion, but you never know, maybe I'll try something that works. I keep thinking maybe a bell part in the chorus would be nice.
And I'm baffled too, as to how these things come together. Sort of by accident, I think.

beautiful on all accounts Jim. I like the vocal too, it gives it that loose feel, like you said, which adds to the over all charm of the song I like this one a lot. Thanks for the D/L

Will not even weigh in on production items ... you are far ahead of where I am and have had some great feed back. From a simple song writers ears tho this is really a wonderful track. Love where you are taking the vocals.

delicate
makes me think of gentle spring breezes. I take it Andrea is the significant other? good for you. 15 years..woohoo. I think the drums and the bass work splendidly to propel things along. Vocals a little subdued but its that type of tune so I think it works fine.

Long way home = one of my fav supertramp tunes

Vocal
Your vocal reminds me a lot of the Pink Floyd song, "Us And Them" from Dark Side Of The Moon. Very appealing and listenable.

So are these drums EZ Drums? They really sound very good. A natural tone and nice flow.

"A long way up" -- very intriguing choice of words. Life is a journey, and your lyrics cleverly describe the twists and turns we experience along the way.

Interesting
mix of music styles. Being someone who appreciates a wide variety of kinds of music I picked up on the laid-back bop with the acoustic bass and vibes sound. Kewl beans.

Really like this
VERY solid effort. I know it's hard for you super-talented musicians/engineers to let a slightly imperfect vocal stay, but the vocal in this tune IS perfect. At least to me. It's very intimate, personal and real. The guitar licks are very tasty. They kind of lurk in the ambience.

The drums are nice, too. The title reminded me of the Tom Waits song "Long Way Home" that Norah Jones nails. The drums would fit nicely in a cover of that, too.
