Mountainside(I.G.M.)

Description
I.G.M. had a very beautiful piece of classical music. He offered me the chance to speak poetry over. I sent a sung version, as well. Ingo said he liked that best. And, he quickly put it together. ( I think he did that faster than it has taken me to post it.) With his permission, I am going to say it is open to further work. Yes, please feel free to critique, offer suggestions(even, if it's "Get a new singer!") Thank you, Ingo for the opportunity.

Lyrics
When I had climbed the mountainside
I had thought that you would stay near
Expecting you to be my guide
Trusting you to hold me dear
>
To my surprise, on turning 'round
I was standing there all alone
On a ledge over holy ground
I thought of all that I was shown
>
It's true I braved the winds of time
And never stopped along the way
Somewhere on that treacherous climb
I had missed your choice not to stay
>
So when I made it to the top
And found that you had gone away
It was then I finally did stop
And got down on my knees to pray
>
When I had climbed the mountainside
So very long ago

-Charlene K.

Good for you, I hope. Argggh!
I almost asked you in chat for help. I kept getting error messages that I hadn't ticked off yes or no. I had. Every time it came up, the song was gone and I had to start all over. Then, I found it had loaded it twice. This has got to be the longest upload in the history of MacJams. I'm so sorry to make everyone wait. Thank You. :)

Not my day.
My first reply which I didn't submit, no doubt, went something like this: Doctor Sagan, I am grateful you stuck around on this Earthly plain the entire time it took me to post this. Thanks for the wonderful comment; you have a way with words. My thanks. :)

Very evocative
Wonderful to see you doing this Char! There's something curious and compelling in the way your voice sounds here, like an old recording of a 1920s diva transported through time. The ghosts of a bygone age.

oooh
Nice swaying gentle breezy music Ingo, very nice. The music, coupled with Char's voice and lyrics and cadence makes this feel like one of those old songs from a well-known musical... very cool both of you! I love the symphonic flourish. Don't really have any critiques or suggestions... other than for some miraculous basket of money to show up on Char's doorstep so she can buy nicer recording equipment :-) Or maybe you could turn up the percussion track a little, the one with the charingo in it :-) Sweet song you two!

Hi, Eduard,
I swear it was like the perils of "Charlene". I think I tried to load it 6 times. Oi, vey, a charingo! That would be a Polish-German wind machine, I guess. Ingo wrote this. And, I sure hope he forgives me for what I did to it. Thank you. :)

Somewhere on that treacherous climb
A really nice style of singing, like out of Broadway or Classic Hollywood. Very evocative...from another era, when men were either Danny Kaye or Richard Burton and women were either Ethel Merman or Vanessa Redgrave.
Char said 244 days ago (March 27th, 2009)
Yeah,
Richard, that is the sweetest way ever to let me know I'm an old lady. Smile! Thank you for dropping in. It was quite beautiful as a classical piece. I was very lucky to have Ingo add my words to it. Thank you. :)

Hi, Karen,
I thought you would enjoy I.G.M.'s music. The writing came easy on first hearing... 15 minutes. I may not be good, but, I'm fast. Kind of unexpected. I was actually just supposed to read. I liked the way it sounded sung. It was so generous of Ingo to let me do this. Thank You. :)

Oh, Jack,
Amazing what can happen when you have wonderful musicians give their time and talent to no-account wanna-be's. Beautiful from the beginning as Ingo's classical piece. I am such a screw up. Loading this took forever. I am sure I tried Ingo's patience. I hope we are still friends. Thank you very much. :)

I mean this as a large compliment - Your singing reminds me of stuff I heard as a child (mom & dad), stuff I play on the stations that play legacy classic material from an age before you and me. What can I say? that's the chill it brings to me, and you do it so well. Well done girl, this is a gift you have

Hi Char......
I'd commented on the previous upload and suddenly it all vanished!! I don't quite remember what I put there but it boils down to being an excellent song, with words and music fitting together so beautifully.

The singing is to die for. Very poignant and, to me, reminiscent of some Japanese modern Madame Butterfly.

Well done to yourself and Ingo for such an inspiring song.

Take care.

I thought
I.G.M.'s music had a grand sound as if it was telling a story about being abandoned, but that the abandonment wasn't even noticed at the time because of distraction and assumption. Then there is shock when the realization hits. The first line came immediately. And I even have a scenario that gave me the idea, from something that actually happened. You are most kind. There is an emotional component and one of these days, it will be as good as I can do it. It was my pleasure.
I only hope Ingo likes it half as much as I do. Thank you. :)

Not at all
"get a new singer" - indeed, the quality of your voice here is quite a surprise. However maybe "get a new mic" might be more appropriate :) I'd love to hear you with a good recording set up doing something like this. However (again) Rebsie has a point about how your vocal sounds like something from another era.

This is a very interesting post Char - congratulations, I think you've done a really good job on this song.

Char
on re-reading my comment, I think I may have given the wrong impression! I thought your voice sounded great. It was meant to read "Not at all 'get a new singer'" - indicating that I thought a new singer wasn't at all required. Sometimes things don't quite sound the same in print - sorry if this gave the wrong impression.

You sang well over I.G.M.'s soundbed. It's good to hear you braving these sonic waters like this.

Bravo to you both!

Be well!

"Braving"
is getting easier as I have been so warm heartedly encouraged by everyone. This music was perfect as it was. I am happy I didn't ruin it. Ingo is a doll! And, so are you. Thank you. :)

Lovely, Char...
Congratulations on this wonderful song, Char. Ingo is a very talented man, and I'm glad you got a chance to work with him. You tell a wonderful story that I assume is metaphorical of your life. You were meant to make it to the top of the mountain on your own, and so you did.

Very well written and sung. I'm very proud of you. Thanks for giving of yourself.

Gentleman, Patrick,
I am very touched by your continued encouragement. Yes, Ingo is wonderful. And you are right. If it were not for what had gone before I would not be doing this now. Writing and singing here is so gratifying. It is nice that people can relate and understand. Thank you. :)

Fanatastic!
I love the quality of your voice in this mix - your control and vibrato are wonderful - this is like a whole other kind of Portishead music - futuristic and ancient at the same time. Excellent track that Ingo put together too. I'm blown away.

I have control?
I think I know about the vibrato. Loose vocal chords or something.
I have heard the Beth Gibbons reference before. I like "futuristic and ancient"... that is so very cool. It started with Ingo's classical composition. I am glad he offered it to me. I am pleased that many have enjoyed it. I loved doing it. Thanks so much. :)

I couldn't believe
it when I heard what Ingo was letting me play with. So powerful. I got the first line right away. The rest came quickly. We had talked about a spoken poem. I sang to try to see where the words should go. I didn't get that 100%. Fortunately, Ingo was able to move some lines around. I'm glad he liked the sung version because I did too. Thank you so much. :)

Hah hah hah.
Excellent musician and intelligent, funny guy too! Careful, shatnered could be a new word added to the dictionary this next year. I was surprised they added gaydar this year. I know language is fluid but it shouldn't decline like that. Shatnered will be used now with a smile on my lips and thoughts of you. I spoke it for Ingo only after I sang it. I hoped he'd like the sung version. Too much shatnerization is not good for anyone. LOL. Thanks for the listen :)

Hi Char...
You did a great job expressing yourself with the music. I have heard one other song of yours but don't always comment. I think it was a rock song but can't remember. Must have been drinking lol... I think here you let yourself go and you did a fantastic job. I'm not a vocalist and have no training but I like to write lyrics as well and sing on 50% of the songs I write. I've only uploaded a few so far but I am trying to learn how to sing confidently and just do more takes if I really sing off lol... I think this is a very good performance from you and I feel something deep in it.

I hope you continue to sing your heart out and gain more and more confidence in yourself. I think all of the people that have posted here, like me, see something in what you are doing that is real and honest and beautiful. So keep doing what you do. It is inspiring to me and I look forward to hearing more from you :D

Sincerely,

Grant (WG here)

Oh my.
I am not speechless very often. Hand to my heart, I am grateful. Yes. I am channeling actual experience in these lyrics. Poetry always was my outlet. Writing and performing music with the support of my friends is more than an outlet. This is a creative expression that I can share in exactly the way I show my paintings. Thank you so much.:)

Entrancing
Beautiful and gentle, yet there's something quite strong and resilient in the tone of the music. Showcases just how good your voice can be - a joy to listen to here.

The orchestration is beautiful, but it does seem a wee bit strong at times - particularly during the first half, when I think a more gentle, subtle feel would work better. The gradual sense of discovery and change, realizing the strengths we've learned and the prices we've paid (sometime without even knowing) to learn them, is hinted at in the orchestration, but might be explored more.

A beautiful song, though, and carried so very well.
