Description
5X Arms and I were having a conversation a while ago about "What my woman does for me" tunes. My favorites are Sugar Magnolia ("jumps like a willys in 4 wheel drive") and Cripple Creek ("if I spring a leak, she mends me") and so I got to playing around with that idea and came up with the "cools my coffee and shines my dimes" line and built the tune around that. As usual I was just trying to have some fun with the music.

The L-O-G/D-O-G line comes from an old blues tune that's been covered by pretty much everyone in the rock and roll world, most notably Waylon (Waymore's Blues). I thought it was fitting for this tune.

Lyrics
if you were a trans am
i'd be burt reynolds
if you were a guitar
i'd be jerry reed
if you were a wild horse
i'd be roy rogers
if you were a lucky charm
honey i'd be me

so if there's something that's on your mind
(if you want to get the rabbit out the L-O-G)
come over and sit it down, we'll kick it like old times
(you got to learn to bark like a D-O-G)
you cool my coffee and you shine my dimes
(if you want to get the rabbit out the L-O-G)
just give it a little while and we'll make it all right
(you got to learn to bark like a D-O-G)

if you were a radio
i'd be casey kasem
if you were kung fu
i'd be bruce lee
if you were a bootleg pass
i'd be roger staubach
if you were a lucky charm
honey i'd be me

so if there's something that's on your mind
(if you want to get the rabbit out the L-O-G)
come over and sit it down we'll kick it like old times
(you got to learn to bark like a D-O-G)
you cool my coffee and you shine my dimes
(if you want to get the rabbit out the L-O-G)
just give me a little while and we'll make it all right
(you got to learn to bark like a D-O-G)

I don't have to wonder where i'd be without you
I don't have to wonder where i'd be without you

All the trademarked tempie taste bits and great lyrics. I love how you say "Kung Fu". The outtro is inspired. That chord progression always delicious. Like Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha". I think we should all follow your lead and write a song about the amazing things our ladies do for us. Mine has never shined a dime, but she definitely tickles my fancy.

Tempie, this sounds awesome. I immediately noticed the production quality was through the roof. I'm impressed. It's as if you've made the transition from AM radio air play to the FM side. I'm not sure if that means we'll no longer hear your signal when driving through a tunnel, but I do know it's now in stereo and it really sounds dy-no-mite!.

The vocals and the effect on your vocal sounds great. I also like that real subtle synth you're using. It really carries the melody nicely.

The guitars are so crunchy and your parasite laced licks are sickening! Your best since the Devil song. At 1:26 it all happens for me. What a massive sound - big like Sonic Youth vs the Who.

The horn section is great. Your strumming guitar sound is a big improvement from the original sketch and the vocals that accompany it in the ending are stinking brilliant. "I don't have to guess where I'd be without you" is a sweet lyric and a great ending to the song. Your vocals are rich with emotion and appreciation for the woman that takes such good care of you. Love the delicate use of triangle too.

This is a fine song, probably as good as I've heard from you. It's a tough call, but if it's not your best song, it's in the running. I'll have to have a tempiefest to really evaluate your entire body of work and try to come to a conclusion.

That's what I think.

You have an unbelievable style. Funny, yet, a bit serious with your lyrics. A kind of psychedelic feel to the music.

There is something on my mind. by the way. Let's kick it like old times.

GREAT variation.

dude
those lyrics! man you really pulled off something special here. that chorus is super fun and upbeat but the verse seems to have a lot of emotional depth in it - esp. when you sing 'I'd be me'. It's hard to pull off sincere joy in a song without making it sound sappy or contrived, but you've done it here.
The outro is great too. I like how this song has 3 distinct sections to it that are very different but never clash. Well done, man.

thanks dude you're the man so always happy when you dig a tempie tune. sincere joy is what i try to be about musically so glad I pulled it off. Good vibrations is my ideal - the way that wilson approached the pop song seriously, as a PIECE of music, start to finish. this doesn't even come close but it's good to know i'm on the path to righteous pop.

got everything i need
I'm amazed at your consistently great songs.
I like the horns in the chorus, as in a couple of your other tunes... they sound pretty realistic (I assume a software instrument though, or maybe a loop?) I've tried something similar a couple of times but it sounded kind of cheesy/fake... got to know how you do it!
The outro is my favourite part which could stand up as a whole song in its own right... kind of mariachi sounding or something... love it.

Check out my latest song called Dead Archive
tempie said 2972 days ago (April 6th, 2009)
horns
the horns are actually the standard GB trumpet sound. I try to create a realistic riff - i'll play a take that I know is off time, just to get most of the notes in there, then splice it up and arrange it note by note until I get a timing/feel that I like. normally I double the track and use diff. vol's in diff ears in the mix. so no real secret.

glad you liked the outro - it does have a mariachi feel - probably more my goofy strumming technique than anything intended though.

Awesome Lyrics Dude !
I really dug this tune as a whole but ..if I may ...the chorus seemed a little bit too busy and was hard to hear your words ...maybe that was a production choice ? You know Ima fan and this is just on a first impression production note . Other than that production was tight and solid ..on my second listen now ...yeah still no feelin the chorus ..seems I really want to hear the lyrics to this ine cause there so cleaver ....Ok Im done with the crit :) I liked it what do you think about the chorus ?

chorus
CRITICIZING my tune? What??? lol i'll take your criticism anytime dude - i'm a respecter of french toast. I think the chorus IS busy, but that's on purpose - i like there to be a lot of layers, to work up some listener interest on a variety of levels. When I mixed this I used phones but also the home system and the radio in the truck, and tweaked it until I thought it worked in each environment. I think maybe the lead vocal could move up a small bit - but only a notch. I want it to sound chaotic, like a sing along at a party. Check it out on some different equipment and see what you think. But if it doesn't grab you it doesn't grab you dude, no harm in that!

suggestion
I'm not a fan of the drums, but that's just my general taste in drumming talking. You might also want to try to let the vocals sit in the mix a little better, too. Otherwise, a strong song. Looks like you have a lot submitted here. I can't keep up with you.
