Heading South

Description
I found the music for this in my old Garageband folder on my backup disc. It had no lyrics, but a title, and I had no recall of recording it. So I fired up GB '09 and played around, writing as I went along. Was an opportunity to use my new TC Electronic Desktop Konnekt 6 firewire interface. The quality of the mic preamps in this is meant to be much better than the ones in my old Behringer mixer. I'm certainly pleased with how vocals have come out.
I've not imported it to LE8 for a final mix yet so it might be a bit hot in places.

Lyrics
I remember exactly where I was
When you looked into my eye
and told me that lie

I never stood a chance with you
Whatever happened to honesty?

There's a million different reasons that I could choose to stay with you
(A million reasons why I should stay)
But each and every one of them is wrong
I would never set my self to be your moral compass
(I'm not gonna show you the way)
I'm sure you'll reach your hell on earth alone

We're heading South and it's coming round again
Everything is broken

I was sorry every single day
But you could never bring yourself to be that way
You always had the high ground with you
Could never find your humility

There's a million different reasons that I could choose to stay with you
(A million reasons why I should stay)
But each and every one of them is wrong
I would never set my self to be your moral compass
(I'm not gonna show you the way)
I'm sure you'll reach your hell on earth alone

We're heading South and it's coming round again
(We're heading South)
Everything is broken

There's a million different reasons why I should stay with you....
(We're heading South, everything is broken)

Love the background vocals! And ya, the quality of the vox seems to be very good. Good song for sure.

Backing vocals
Thanks. I made a conscious effort to do something with the backing vocals here. I'm a great fan of counterpointed vocals but haven't really had a song that suits them til now. I'm really pleased with the vocal work here especially as the song was, to all intents and purposes, discarded until I rediscovered it.

Wordy chorus
That wordy chorus was something I'd actively planned for this song. I tend to write my lyrics to fit the bars of the music but on this occasion I wanted the effect of going from longer, more languid voices to the quick fire pre-chorus. Seems to have paid off. The falsetto backing took a while but I think I have found the perfect settings to smooth off my voice but keep it natural in the mix. Cheers for the comments.

Enjoyed this one
ALOT!! This is well written and has a great melody Paddy. Great job on those harmonies. This really has one of those singalong choruses.

Singalong
...thanks Guy. I hadn't really thought if it as a singalong but after playing it for my better half in the car today she said the exact same thing. She did ask me what the hell kind of mood I was in when writing those words too!
As always thanks for your comments.

Branded
... eeeh I like the idea that I have a "brand of powerpop". I remember telling Tempie that he had a "Tempie sound" and he was really pleased - I can see why. To think that your personality or style can give your work some level of distinctiveness is really cool. As always, comments from an artist of your calibre are always welcome!

Fine songwriting...
I've had the same experience of discovering old files and not remembering having recorded them. Unnerving, yet delightful at the same time.

Nice lyrics. Lovely vocal arrangement. Enjoyed your harmony work.

Good solid tuneage!

Be well!

Tuneage
"Solid Tuneage" from you Michael, this is a huge deal! My second time round at MacJams has been an inspiration, especially when getting positive comments from artist I've admired. Thanks.

nice
arrangement. The voice recording sounds great - fits well in the mix. I like the high pitched background vocals at the end. Definitely a keeper man.

Keeper...
... this new TC Electronic interface apparently has just one of their top end mic pre-amps in it. It certainly seems to pick up the vocal nuances better than the previous (Behringer) pre-amp I used. Thanks for the kind words man.

Melody...
... yeah I'm all about the melody, sometimes to my detriment. I'm not very "experimental" and kinda stick to having a tune, verse, chorus that kinda thing. Glad you liked the lyrics. Was going for the summer feel but dark lyrics vibe.

Exellent post - lucky find
the vocals sound great and I like how you work the backups in. Good set of lyrics too. Glad I stopped by. I also like the way you kept the solo bridge simple and on the mark.

Guitar solo...
... well Bud, simple and on the mark is the only way I can play. I'm untrained and really no great shakes on the guitar. I'll never be a shredder and my music takes account of that. Happy you liked the solo though! Cheers.

Yes,
The vocals are clean and sound great. I like the lyrics, too. Well, the subject of the lyrics is a bit depressing, but you express the ideas very well.

Laidback Rock with bounce and energy
My only suggestion is that you try to go more daring with your solo. what I usually do is find the notes that I think will sound good in the key that I'm in, give myself a couple passes without recording, and then record several passes, holding on to bits that sounded good and recording over the stuff I flubbed. That way you have a solo that sounds like a first pass without having to learn the whole thing. It takes a while, but you'll be pleased at the results. Otherwise, the song is solid with a quite bitter lyric that is tempered by a backing track polished with a california sheen

Sweet song
Really like this Paddy - your voice works really well on this - loads of feeling and character. I rush of chorus works a treat - gives the track a great sense of energy and urgency.
