The Gardener Child (w/ Luna Trick)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Continuing our sequence of Luna-orchestrated British folk songs. This one is probably Scottish in origin, dating back to at least 1766 when it was published in a song book, but probably older.

It's essentially just a song about the weather and seasons. But it's couched in beautiful imagery of a magical courtship, complete with archaic flower names.

Hope you like it.

Rebsie: vocals
Daniel: cello and orchestration

Lyrics
words and tune traditional

Proud Maisrie stands in her bower door
As slim as a willow wand
When by there come a gardener child
With a red rose in his hand, his hand
A red rose in his hand

Oh you shall have my rose fair maid
If you'll give your flower to me
And among the flowers in your father's yard
I'll make a gown for thee, for thee
I'll make a gown for thee

Your dress shall be the smelling thyme
And your petticoat camowine
And your apron of the celandine
Come kiss sweetheart and join, and join
Come kiss sweetheart and join

Your feet I'll shoe with yon red rue
That grows in the garden fine
And I'll line them with the tapetan
So join your love with mine, with mine
So join your love with mine

Since you have made a gown for me
Among the summer flowers
So I will make a suit for thee
Among the winter showers, showers
Among the winter showers

The milk-white snow shall be your shirt
And lie your body next
And the mirk-black rain shall be your coat
With a wind gale at your breast, your breast
A wind gale at your breast

The horse that you shall ride upon
Shall be the winter gale
And I'll bridle him with the northern blast
And a few sharp showers of hail, of hail
A few sharp showers of hail

The bonnet that's upon your head
Shall be the southren grey
And every time that you pass by
I'll wish you were away, away
I'll wish you were away

Amazing
the arrangement is excellent - as is your voice. The production and mix seems just right too - never sounding cluttered - nicely atmospheric and subtle.

Thank you Peter for your unstinting support. Daniel worked very hard on this to get layers of complexity into it without compromising the subtlety. Glad you like how it came out.

what impressed me most about this one is that - although i already knew this because rebsie is AWESOME! - daniel's orchestration made it very evident that your pitch was perfect. The bassoon(?) in the far right that played along with your melody really accentuated your voice wonderfully and made it quite clear that you are excellent at what you do. The rest of the orchestration is gorgeous - perfect drones, i LOVED the percussion crashes and tambourine. Very cool little clarinet line. Just brilliant, both of you.

Rebsie said 233 days ago (April 6th, 2009)

Thanks Shay, that means a lot to me. For this sequence of songs I've been sending Daniel a cappella tracks to work with. So I was singing without a backing track and used a drone as a guide to keep me in tune. I find a drone easier to sing to than an actual song structure in some ways. The Gardener Child is a very difficult one to sing and stretches both ends of my vocal range, so I surprised myself by doing this mostly in one (lightly patched up) take.

I'm very happy with what Daniel did with the orchestration. His judgement of all of it is spot on.

These songs are all...
...amazing treasures from the past that you and Daniel are resurrecting for a 21st century audience. The understatement in your vocal rendition, Rebsie, and in Daniel's simple orchestration are just so absolutely compelling. Such beauty is certainly wonderful to hear in the wasteland of so much harsh music that our contemporary world throws at us at nearly every moment. (And you are right: the imagery of these lyrics is very cool.)
Peace.

Thank you Paul for an insightful comment ... it's nice to see how well you've understood what we were trying to do. I think the images evoked by the Shakespearean-style flower names were a big part of why this song appealed to me.

It gives me great pleasure...
...to orchestrate this old song about the Gardener Child sung by a Daughter of the Soil.

My orchestration seeks to be subtly episodic in the manner of the romantic tone poem - where talk of love and the heart finds the strings - the gown is spun with slightly menacing woodwinds - and the percussion intimates the seasons. With Rebsie's encouragement, there are some odd elements, including a diminished harpsichord chime, a flute-organ and viola drone, and the modal voice harmony at the end. My use of drones throughout much of this series has significance in that it is part of ancient organum techniques employed by early medievalist and pre-baroque composers. Such can be found in plainchant, plainsong, Gregorian chant, liturgical monophony, as well as more recent madrigals and folk songs. I often find it to be a natural accompaniment, with more modern interweavings, for Rebsie's past-future delivery.

Shay's point about Rebsie's pitch is absolutely spot on and and I am constantly blown away when working on these pieces. This is a voice that seeps into the recesses of the most anchorite soul - and I am both humbled by and grateful for the opportunity to work with such a voice. Rebsie's patience, wisdom, and intuitiveness were also a large part of what you hear in my final orchestration.

Sincerest thanks ...
... for your talent, understanding and inspiration, and for the care you put into it.

I'm very glad you work so comfortably with modes and drones. I love drones, they're a part of how my musical brain works. They anchor me into the song somehow, and give me a foundation and focus. Each note of the melody bounces off the drone in its own unique way. They're powerful things.

I've had this song on my to-do list for years, but didn't know where to begin. You've done me proud again.

Lovely indeed ..

.. fantastic performance Rebs (your voice just fits these songs like a glove). Daniel did an amazing job on the mix and instrumentation- just right amount... loved the oboe? in particular... perhaps a bassoon... and the clip-clop of the horses: gave me minor visions of the Monty Python team with coconuts .. that violin sounded very real at the very end too.

PS. I think your quite right about the Scottish origins, since I found this: Gairdner Chyld lyrics. It's not so often text goes from English to native Scots dialect... more the other way around. I never knew Nick Cave did this too... I even found some mandolin tab for it and a version on iTunes of it by Alan Lomax too.... but this is a much better version... if more 'haunting' and less 'drinking and pipe songs' :o)

Therein lies my only nit, to be honest, is it's a bit too 'haunting' sounding an interpretation imo .. like 'she moved through the fair' with it's ghostly leanings, when, (to me) the lyrics just speak of typical boy woos girl, girl accepts wooing .. and various gift exchanging in between or perhaps a crush from a young boy on an older woman(?).. but it's all fabulously done never-the-less and pay no heed to my whining.

Would have suited a duet since it seems to be a call and answer dialog between male and female verse about after the 1st verse.

Not sure how to interpret the last two lines in the last verse .. has he grown tired of her already?? lol ;o)

Whoa Patsy
You were taken in by the fake violin (ooh that rhymes) which was cunningly emulated by a cello.

Thanks for doing the research! I've seen lots of versions of this song in Scots dialect and I'm not sure where this anglicised version comes from ... most likely a product of the 1960s folk revival.

Maybe it's just me and my little pagan soul, but I always assumed it wasn't a literal boy woos girl story but a metaphysical one. She is summer and he is winter, and they endow each other with the appropriate symbolism for each season.

Beautiful!
Another wonderful Rebsie vocal over a classy Luna bed. Excellent production. Wasn't sure about some of the discordant notes) around 1:15 - although I'm sure there was a logical rationale behind them being there, they didn't really work for me. But that's a small nit only - this is really very good.

It's occurred to me that these tunes you two are doing together warrant some serious attention on a slightly broader stage than MJ - I wonder whether something could be done by MJers to help.

Rebsie, your voice is one of the seven wonders of MacJams!

Honoured to have such a great comment from you Anne. The harmony at the end is a Luna creation and I confess I didn't sing it myself ... probably just as well because this song is already a challenging stretch for my vocal range and I'd probably have ruptured something if I'd tried to go that high.

OOh-
delicate, magical, mysterious. I love that pedal point that keeps it grounded, yet allows for episodic entrances from so many different instruments. Very nicely done. Nevertheless, the vocals stay in the foreground as they need to. The final verse where the vocal harmonies enter is so cool- the mid phrase modal switch from major to minor and back gave me goosebumps. The final cello phrase, from somewhere 'out there' was a really great touch!

The Gardner
I am very impressed with this piece, but what can I say that has not been said already. So, I took choice phrases from several of your other comments that more or less sum up my thoughts on your work : "What an auditory treat"; "exquisite"; "Just brilliant"; "absolutely compelling"; "your voice enchants"; "smooth is the word". Rebsie, I am surprised no one has mentioned your name with Loreena McKennitt's in the same sentence here - you have that same enchanting vocal style. Daniel, once again you have masterfully taken your unique musical style and successfully melded to the genre you are working with to create your own brand of unusual and unique. I keep reading that this is part of a series of songs - guess I have some listening to catch up on! Thank you for sharing this.

What I like most about this is the fact that the instrumentation never intrudes on the vocal, which is wonderful (as ever!) but rather complements it. The words are, indeed, beautiful, and wonderfully evoke the seasons. All helped of course by the terrific delivery. A great combination of talents. Nicely done to you both. Peace.
