Mandorrito Hey
ok well first of all, i just cracked up at the title. as usual your creativity knows no bounds, and i love how this builds and builds, each repeated phrase bringing in new instruments, drama and interest. when the shouting men come in, i'm HOOKED and had to jump up and dance around (not a pretty sight). You're masterful smokey, and this is VERY COOL!

You're not in denial
you're crazy. I couldn't stop laughing once the guys started shouting - before that it was all grins. I think the key modulations lend it an air of sophistication that takes it to an absurd level of silliness. And that four note turnaround is from some old popular tune that is escaping me now. What is it? Is it The Adams Family theme?

that little melody that first comes at 1:45? no idea. it grew from the chords, which came from my needing a B part for contrast. i added the horns which were sort of Mexican, but the tremolo mandolin doing that melody started to seem like a balalaika, which led to needing the Russian shouts.

it all started out from the A part: the opening mandolin which was meant to be like a lute which was supposed to be a medieval thing in harmonic minor. the modulation was simply a cheap way out to relieve the monotony.

somehow the Mariachi horns snuck in - the genre all went horribly wrong after that, so i just "rolled" with it, a la a burrito.

during arranging, the song was getting too long, so for the build ups, i started introducing parts in the middle of the part A pattern to save time, and that took on a life of its own by overstressing the modulation.

(btw, the only loops here are the Mariachi percussion and a transmogrified jazz bass line.)

there really ought to be a genre for Medieval Mariachi Russian pieces!

thanks for giving me an excuse for a brain-dump

and i am so, in denial :)

Eclectic, at best. I learned some music theory at school, and read a ton about it since. I've listened to lots of music over the years. I once played guitar in an actual garage band and actually got paid to play! Once. Although live performance is an... [see more]
