Description
For the past two years, I've hiked a certain trail each week. In previous winters, I've bypassed this hike because of the snow. But this year I purchased snowshoes, which allowed access to the trail year-round. Seeing this trail through all four seasons has been a wonder and a joy. There is a quiet, understated beauty to winter that I've never experienced before.

This piano improvisation is mostly introspective in nature, and as I was looking through photos I've taken over the past year of my favorite hike while listening to this, it seemed to fit--hence this composition's name.

And, while I considered adding additional instrumentation, I decided to simply add some nature sounds in the background, while inviting you to view a slideshow of pictures from my hike throughout the four seasons HERE.

Enjoy :)

Wonderful
I listened while watching your excellent slideshow. You are an excellent photographer, and that looks like a beautiful place. You have really caught the sense of the shifting seasons and all the magic and mystery that entails. I suggest everyone who listens check out the slideshow as well; it's a terrific combination. Lovely haunting music, and the nature sounds work in this context, I think. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

Thank you....
...for the nice words about the music and the photographs. I've never done much photography until I started hiking in earnest about 4 years ago. It seemed such a shame to be so immersed in this beauty and not capture it in some way.
I feel blessed that I can at least try, now :)

Thanks again for leaving a comment.

I'm a sucker for focussing on something personal and trying to really see into it, get a feel for the detail if you like. I find it fascinating that you've done this walk so often, and now in 4 seasons We hike a lot - mainly in winter (no snow of course), but rarely retread our steps with any sort of regularity. I can imagine how this might be though, and will try to think a little more about where we walk and when.

So, I can relate to the inspiration you've drawn from before even hearing a note. Musically I really like this also. It is so chilled, and although I'm not usually a fan of "nature fx" in music, this is certainly an exception.

Thanks for taking me on this hike - I'm off to look at the photos now.

One of the things I love most about improvisation is I never know what it will be until it's done. It's always a journey and a discovery--two of the best things in life.

Beautifully done and played Cat
There is a serenity out on the trail in winter that you don't find in the other seasons. This starts with that mood oh so present. Sitting in the snow looking out over a winter valley is a personal joy for me, always has been. Only now, where I live it rarely snows, and when it does, it never stays for long.

I love this piece Cat, thank you for the peace of heart you have shared with me.

This is something I'd like to do...
...and something I wish I could do... There are spots of 'quiet, understated beauty' all over, that I see when my mind drops into the 'quiet, understated beauty seeing space'...

The piano work is simple and elegant and doesn't rely on endlessly arpeggiating New Age cliches. It's meditative, psalmlike, almost shape note hymn-like, and it's songlike, which I always like...

It also seems to find its own proper tempo through your fingers. Nothing sounds forced or rushed or dragging...

First off
I gotta say I am totally jealous that you are able to hike in this area every week??!! stunning. your piano composition is perfect for it as well - I can sense the changing seasons in the music - very nice. My only complaint: the link above takes you to some beautiful pictures, but if you are listening to the music it of course cuts you off as the page changes. Too bad you can't have the link open a new window so the music can continue to play while you look at the photos at the same time.

anyway nice work - thank you for sharing this.

Aha, "enjoy"!
I read "Envy me!" ;-) Because that's the kind of music I would like to play/compose, that's the kind of photos I would like to take, that's the kind of place I would like to live in!!!

Sigh, and here I am in suburban flatty Stockholm and haven't made a song in five-six months (although I have taken a couple of fairly nice photos).

Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this with us all! I actually did enjoy it immensely! Stay well!

/Henrik

And you are...
...a wonderful photographer, too. What a beautiful place you have to walk. Such amazing flowers!!! This seems like a piece composed on a very dreary winter morning (late Jan.--Feb.)...It is a cinema number, totally introspective, a little sad, and there is loss in it, too, the kind of loss that can't be gotten back. You were wise to not orchestrate this beyond the color of the piano. That was the perfect decision. (I am catching up on several weeks worth of posts... My studio has been "down" for some upgrading and repairs.)
Peace.
