Description
This is a lovely short song written and performed by Rebsie, who graciously allowed me to add some parts and post it here.

I have called this version 'alætan,' which is the Old English word for leaving or letting go.

We may do a longer version of this at some point - so be sure to let us know what you think.

Rebsie: Vocals, Acoustic Guitar
Daniel: Electric Guitars, Bass

Good to have
a new original from Rebsie. Really nice song - I think a longer version would be better still - I thought the background vocals were a wee bit overpowering as I was struggling to hear the words at times - could just be the headphones I'm using at work. I'll download when I'm at home and another listen through some better gear!

Daniel, your backing on this is excellent and fits the piece perfectly!

Thanks for sharing.

THANK YOU
I can hardly believe this one-take wonder which languished in the shady pond of my iTunes folder for three years has emerged as something so golden. Your shimmering guitar was obviously meant for it. I can almost hear the creaking of the boat through the reeds.

The original inspiration for this was Tennyson's poem (and some Pre-Raphaelite paintings) about the lady of Shalott, who is cursed to watch the world in a mirror, weaving a tapestry of shadows and reflections.

great song, beautiful singing.
Like the Morricone-esque backing.
add an instrumental bridge and repeat a verse or so and you've got a kickass 3 and half minute song.

Short but very sweet ..

.. I could hear this building up or morphing with other string orchestration. eg. cello springs to mind. :o)

The vocals are excellent as I'd expect but for me I really liked all the guitar work and the use of the fast tremelo/panning/chorus? Gave me shades of earlier Fleetwood Mac .. and perhaps the odd use of swelling cymbals might fit in this too. It's very soothing and spot-on paced and as such I could have listened to it twice as long.

Lovely vocal Rebsie
Cool post. I agree with Bryn, the length seems about perfect. For me the overall sound could be backed off a tad to give it a little more "air". Finally, I'd like to hear the bass playing a more sedate role - it sounds a little unnecessarily busy for the song.

Love the tune and performance overall though - Daniel, your guitars are very nicely done. I've said it before, Rebsie could sing the telephone book and make it interesting :) Maybe that's the next post?

Fair enough Neil...
Always good to get another take. I'm sure we'll find lots of good lyric material before we resort to the phonebook!

Really excellent
must hear more - this was just getting going. I hear a new style of contemporary trad emerging from this piece - keep on going where you're going - I'm liking it a lot. Pentangle was one of my faves as Rebsie knows and there is something about this sound that hints at their work - and it's not just R's beautiful vocals.

I'm probably...
...losing a lot of my hearing: I can't understand any of the lyrics of this number...and I wish I could because it is a very pretty number (but way too short). I like the gentle feeling of it and the simple orchestration with guitar and and a simple lead. The vocals are magic and I the echo-y electric strums are perfect for this number.
Peace.
Paul
