Description
A little more than a year ago I was having difficulty with my hand, and I could see that I won’t be able to play this stuff forever... I’ve been recording some of my more difficult music... stuff like “the clap”... (Steve Howe)... which I can’t post here... I’m really not doing it to post. anyway. just so that someday I can say “see I used to play like this” oh well... time is racing by, and my oldest son will be in his 20’s in less than a month... and just yesterday we were watching him learn to walk...

This is one of those songs that I can only play when I’m on my game... It was written by my good friend Wayne Scott Farley... We traveled together through the 80’s and he is one of my mentors... Wayne showed me what is possible, and not just musically...

I played this song at Danes’ baby dedication, (the Protestant equivalent of a christening I guess)... it seems like only yesterday, and it brought down the house... thanx Wayne...

We’ve had 2 days of rain here... so I took myself into the studio for some uninterrupted time.... I haven’t been creative enough as of late to even move toward anything new....

google Wayne if you want a treat...

Lyrics
Good morning you rascal do you know who you are?
You’re my day spring. You're my morning star.

good morning to you... good morning to you

Blue skies open your eyes. Fill my child with cheer.
Goodness gracious, there’s nothing to fear.

good morning to you.... good morning to you

Come, come my son... see what dad has planned for you.
Run grab your hat we’re a team and you're at bat.
I’m rootin' just for you!

Hello my children all over the world.
I’ll be with you as the years unfurl.

good morning to you.... good morning to you
good morning to you.... good morning to you

did ya
have all the extra vocals parts when you did the dedication? :-) Scott, too cool. Love the rhythmic intricacies and the vocals are just outstanding. Speaking of Howe this has some definite Yes like overtones, I can see the influence in the playing and the vocals. Well done sir.

Just Me
and my guitar... this is the reason I love having a studio... the one place that you can go to shape it the way you hear it... I left all the slapping in on guitar even though the compressor really pulled it forward... I thought it worked so well with the drums...

thanx John

Scott Carmichael Music, Always Great
It's always a great day when I get notification of a Scott Carmichael posting. With both my daughters in their twenties now, I felt this song in my heart... Time is so elastic... Sometimes it drags and drags, and sometimes it flies by. The rascals become adults. It bends the mind.

This song, like all your songs, gets all the way in when I listen.

Your playing and singing are *very* high level, as always, and combined with the wonderful positive nature of this song, you present us with another gem. Thank you for this, Scott. Please visit your studio as often as possible. Such great things happen when you do...

Wow Scott
I'm hoping the hand things is just a figment of your imagination... You need to keep playing like this dude! Although I know it is a fact of life... I simply cannot play the way I used to. I was never great but was pretty fast in yesteryear... now I can barely change chords at times!

This song has lots going on in it and it's very sweet indeed. The guitar work is delish!!! Excellent Scott!

Nothing seems wrong
with that hand Scott :)

Love this - a classic SC post. Great vocals, playing, arrangement etc etc etc etc etc. Personally, I wish you'd cut back on the slaps on the guitar just a tad - they are really piercing at volume. Ha! That's a bit like saying the Mona Lisa could do with a little less white in the eyeball :)

Bravo!!

Hi Neil
The hand is pretty good right now... as long as I don't play as much.... I never listen to anything loud anymore... my ears ring all the time... but i went back and turned this up... your right... If I remove the compression from the guitar it really moderates those slaps, but I have no fingernails, so the compression brings the strings to life.. i'll have to find a compromise... I'm thinking the multipressor... It's always good to have a project waiting

Yay! What an 'up' song - I love it! Great arrangement and mix; amazing, really! I know what you mean about the hands. I've been noticing more pain in my left hand when I play, it's been happening over the past few years, and I realize that I can no longer play as well as I used to. Maybe laying down a few tracks now, while I still can, would be a good idea. I hope you continue to do so, this summer. I hear the Steve Howe elements in here too; funny, because I was just watching a bunch of Steve Howe videos on YouTube a couple of days ago. Anyway, you rock, and I thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with us.

The Professor
As I told Patrick "there are a few people whom I post for... thanx" Steve puzzles me more now, he goes through the motions, but if you watch film when he was young, he played with absolute fire... it's like he's Neo now and see's everything in slow motion... this does not diminish his mastery or influence on me...

I hope to get in the studio as summer comes... i do have some things that I'm working on, if they don't end up on the garbage, pile you'll hear them... smart money is on the pile though....

Really Tip Top
Smashing guitar work full of energy and heart. The lyrics are bursting with positivity and affection.
Little elements of Tom Chapin in the structure and even Simon and Garfunkel in the vocalisations.
Very professional production, the guitar sounds truly expansive, your fingers are deft and skilled.
I'm wondering how much of a difference Logic makes to the actual sound quality compared to Garageband, as someone who has used both, what do you think?

Magic song Scott, bravo.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Will thanx
I've been recording with logic since version 3... pre apple... I've goofed around with GB, but never recorded... I'm guessing that apple didn't re-write any summing code for GB, but instead co-opted the code from Logic when they bought it... guessing though... summing is where the rubber meets the road with software... then it's the quality of the plug-inns...

my guitar sound is built on a 3 legged foundation... a great instrument (with new strings)... very good mikes... in this cae AKG 4041's miked in stereo close @ 90 degrees 12th fret... and a killer tube pre-amp/compressor... I push the tubes and back off before distortion, with around 2 to 3 db of gain reduction...

the sound has everything to do with my signal chain, and little to do with Logic... It did seem to me that the plug ins with GB were pretty decent... impressive actually... that's the one area where Logic has an advantage... again i'm no GB expert...

thak you Willie... i appreciate it much

Not sure about what's up with your hand...but if it seems like CPS, I was able to get to it before it got worse with a daily dose of B6 (start with 500 MG and then move on down to 250 when you're feeling better) and B Complex. Haven't had a problem since.

Be nice if that could help you. Your hands put out some fine music in tandem with your heart and mind.

C'mon....
I was going to fave it anyway 'cause it's a song about being a dad. But then it has to step seamlessly into this Yes-Meets-Loggins-And-Messina territory, and I didn't even know there WAS such a territory....

And listen, it's simply unfair that you're that good at singing. And playing. And, you know, like, recording things....

Sheesh.

Oh yeah, and arranging them. That too. The whole drum and percussion-y thing. Yeah, that.

I'm sorry, was I supposed to insert something critical in here somewhere?

very intricate song Scott. It's a pretty involved piece when I listen how intricate everything is woven together here.
this time around i was able to listen through the headphones and i really picked up how well layered this is.

Awkward Man Hug comin' at ya...
Ooh, I missed a good one. IOU an "I love you, Man" shout-out, in that awkward Man-Hug kinda way. Absolutely effervescent lyrics, guitar, vocals and production. I can't believe what you're ale to bring to the surface in your music. I will re-re-revisit this song for months and years to come.

Without detracting from your originality--not comparisons!--I want to say that your harmonies and dynamics seem to fit in well with some XTC at the height of their more sophisticated outings such as the "English Setlement" album (and "Love on a Farmboy's Wages" off the otherwise lackluster "Mummer" album.)

Great sound, beatiful song
The guitar is beautiful. Really well played, great tone. I've always had trouble getting a decent acoustic guitar recording. You clearly have mastered the technique. I really like the composition. We need more uplifting music.
