Beyond The Rings of Saturn (A Choral Mix)

This is a Space Ambient mix, in keeping with my recent spate of Ambient tracks. This one encorporates the typical Space Ambient backdrop but has a mixed choir adding vocals over the top.

As always, I am interested in any comments, good or not, on this and any of my other mixes. It's good to know how people think about this type of soundscape.

I thought you were having a rest?
Glad you are not though. Your music is always so inspirational. Has this been done with your new soft synths? And if so which ones? I would love to know a bit more about how you generate your sounds.

Hi TBEsq.....
I was not having a rest but running out of decent mixes, so I wrote the comment to Daniel, in my last upload, and then changed my ideas a little and the start of this mix came to life. What can I say?? Lucky is probably the word I'm looking for.

It makes me happy if my music is inspirational to others. Thank you for your kindness here.

I'll drop you a note on what I used for this mix, together with a link for a draft of my 'How I Do Things' document, on how I do some of my music.

Take care.

Hi Daniel.......
The only part of the mix that I was unsure about was the length of the notes in the vocal parts. I didn't think it sounded natural and I don't know if a real choir could do this, exactly as I 'heard' it.

One day I may arrange it and try and find out.

Take care.

Hi Shay.........
Once again I'm happy that you found something in one of my pieces that you could enjoy.

The production took me a lot longer than normal, and I nearly gave up on this one, but I had a 5th or 6th attempt, and managed to produce a version that was at least uploadable, for others to listen to. I'm still not 100% happy with the production so I may do more with this arrangement, and see what comes out of Mark II.

I add depth by doubling, trebling or quadrupling the stereo outs of certain parts, especially the PAD's. This give the mix that fullness and depth, plus a pinch of space-verb, for the echoooooo.

Take care.

Again .... what perfect placement of all the sounds. I would say "Deep Space" ambient. Good stuff here ... really good stuff.

Hi Davisamerica......
Deep Space Ambient is about right. This depth seems to come through using multiple signal pairs from the PAD synth Outs and then some reverb on the post-production.

I'm still playing with these sort of settings and effects, so be prepared to hear more 'effects'. This mix, as I said above, gave me lots of trouble in areas where I don't normally have problems.

Take care.

I like your choices of sounds
here but there's a tremulous, a pulsing quality that at least for me distracted from the beauty of this. I think the mix was quite good. A nice piece of ambient music which I'd like to hear with less distortion.

Hi Fathom.........
I hear what you are saying.....There were all sorts of niddly problems with this mix and I originally abandoned my first attempts with the piece and I thoughts I'd give it one last try, and this came out, so it's nearer to being 'better' but not quite a completed piece.

I will listen to this piece again, to see if I can hear what you mention. If I can remove/lessen this, I'll drop you a note and send you a link, to listen to another mix.

Another problem with my setup here at home is that I work with laptop speakers and headphones, so not the best way to make a great mix.

Take care.

Beautiful scaping.
Classic space ambient. Wonderful. Just a little touch of darkness to capture the inhospitable nature of it. I love choir voices in ambient. They always give me trouble when I try it, and it's rarely (if ever) successful. You handled them with aplomb. Quite a body of impressive spating. I think I hear the sound that Fathom refers to. It's more like a pulsating static out on the periphery. I assumed it was intentional. I like the way it sounds. It adds something that I can't put into words.

Hi Duane........
I'm happy that you found this piece interesting. The distortion that Fathom heard is part of the mix, although more than is good. I think the noise came from Zebra 2, which has some presets that do give excessive background hiss. I'll be more watchful of this in future.

I enjoy putting these 'Dark Edges' into my Ambient mixes, as space is a dark, unfriendly place, unless you prepare and dress accordingly.

Take care.

Sure is spacey
The addition of the short melodic bits (they sound like slow repeated upward arpeggios) I find adds a lot of depth and movement to what you already have going on. Cool as usual. Bravo Paul.

All the best,

Hi Doug......
The PAD's I used were 'evolving' so the sound changed over time, in a non-repeatable (during the recording) fashion. These sort of mixes CAN be reproduced or enhanced. There's always something more I can do to these type of mixes.

Take care.
