The Singer (with Roxy)

Description
Believe it or not, this song was inspired after I watched James Taylor at a one man live Theatre Gig, shown on TV. Such a great easy style he has and while this sounds nothing like him or his style, it was the looks on the faces of the audience as they sat hanging onto every word he sang, that quite moved me as well as them. The silence and intentness of their(sometimes 'teary' gaze was something special. This therefore is not so much about the man as the emotion in his audience, and it struck me how everybody has these same emotional feelings deep inside, no matter how they may try to cover them in their day to day lives. The song though just needed a softer vocal touch to give it a lift and who better than our songstress Roxanne to sweeten it with her lovely harmonies? I asked and she immediately agreed to do the job and I'm thrilled to bits with the outcome..... hope you like it.

Lyrics
The Singer

‘Saw a singer who’s a storyteller, tellin’ how he turned his life around,
Touching raw emotions in his audience, they wish he’d never found.
He sang of when he was a youth, swearin’ that it was the truth,
His Daddy left when he was ten, never coming home again,
Leavin’ him to care for siblings and a Mom who simply pined away.

Every eye was red and sad, listenin’ about the life he’d had,
Emotion runnin’ through the air, brought feelin’s that just made them sit and stare,
His voice rang out the saddest song, as fingers played the guitar he was holdin’,
But the beauty of his singing was the feelings he instilled in those beholdin’ (When he said)

Chorus.
Everyone has feelings, No-one is an island,
Learn to share your feelin’s and show someone you care,
Sisters now and brothers, love one another,
Nothin’ is as beautiful as showing people just how much you care.

The audience they sat so still, with wrapped attention ‘till each song was over,
Then they clapped and cheered, in appreciation of this singin’ rover,
To a man they understood the meaning of the words that he was callin’,
He was holdin’ up a mirror of their lives and that’s what kept the tears a rollin’ (when he said)

Chorus x2

Thank you, Maurice
I liked this song immediately and was delighted to sing on it. I hope JT gets to hear this. I am amazed at how many styles you can sing and they all sound so natural. I think this has an island feel, although no one is an island.

Your songs...
...always take me back "a number of years" because of the orchestral content as your accompaniment. This is such a pleasant number, Maurice.Lyrics always tell an interesting story and your sense of meter in music and lyrics is symmetrical and perfectly planned and executed. Nice harmonies in background, both the "choir" and Roxy's additions on the chorus each time. Wonderful song; wonderful collaboration.
Peace.

Very nice
I like the country vibe to this...reminds me a bit of some of the stuff off Nick Lowe's last album, in fact you have a similar vocal style to Mr Lowe.
Great female harmonies on the chorus too

That's
a very nice comment Steve as I love Nick Lowe.... I hesitated to put 'Country' as the genre type because people tend to skip by (someone told me), so it's good that you like that country feel. I'm really pleased with Roxy's harmonies too, regards M

Timeless music
You have a way of writing/singing these timeless tunes that sound like they've been on the radio forever... gentle thought-provoking gems. Very well-written lyrics that tell the story and fit so perfectly to the music, and tastefully sung. Roxylee's harmonies, although a teeny bit muffled, really added to this song too. The guitar had some kind of "tremolo" effect that was a little distracting, might have sounded better with less effects, but overall, very nicely arranged.

Nice to
see you here Drak and I'm really pleased that you gave this a listen... yes I do seem to be stuck in the past sometimes; I suppose its too late for me to change now, but as long as I can still bring pleasurable listening to folks, that will do for me..... yes Roxy gives it a real warm lift.... and to tell the truth I wasn't thrilled with my guitar on this and that's why I added some tremolo to help pack it out a little. Thanks too once again for the nice words about my gems, regards M

While I am not a fan of country music, I have always enjoyed listening to country in its most classic form - Gene Autry style, etc. It always brings back memories of my childhood for some reason, but they are the types of memories that evoke feelings of longing for a different time. That is something I really like about your music - it takes me on a journey back, to a different time in my life when things were less complicated. This is a wonderfully simple and heartfelt piece that just makes you feel good to listen to - so thanks for 4 and half minutes of pleasant memories and warm thoughts. I appreciate you sharing this with us

Strange you should mention Gene Autry as I did think of searching on line for a pic of him for the accompanying artwork for this song. I'm really flattered by your kind comments about my music and it pleases me no end , that you enjoyed the listen, regards M

Maurice
Paul F said it for me - your songs "take me back" to an earlier time when things were simpler and life was far less daunting. I mean absolutely no disrespect when I say that my mum would have loved this - she used to love The Seekers, Val Doonican and other artists of the 60s and 70s who played and sang songs she could understand and relate to. Despite being someone who was more rock influenced, I still feel a connection to this. RoxyLee's additions are superb. You have a remarkable voice which really does seem to shift time - "timeless" that's the word I was after - thanks Drak!
Good post Maurice.

I understand
what you're saying Neil and I'm really pleased with your comment.... Just call me a 'Time Lord' in a 'Time Warp' LOL..... as I said to Paul in PM I'm from that era and it's just ingrained in me. I think that's why I try to do so many genres; because I was there when each style was popular. I was in my 20's in the 60's and it's a loooooong time to be listening to music.... I love it all. Again , thank you especially for the 'vocal' comment, cheers M

Hits the mark!
One of your best works Maurice - such impact in the lyrics which are direct and full of meaning. The use of the backing chorus is brilliant, and of course Roxy on the chorus is icing on the cake. Well put together - JT would be proud.

I saw James in Ottawa at Bluesfest last summer and he had everyone in the palm of his hand. Awesome to watch how this guy connects with his audience (not to mention his musicianship). I can tell from the quality of your work that he had his impact on you as well.

Cheers,
Doug

One special
thing that I love about this terrific tune is that one thing I craved and missed is the early music of our pop boomer period. I hear this and you really bring back what was good about the 50 and times periods were country just crossed over to pop. It just seems that you captured that flavor. Names like Marty Robins, Everly Brothers, basically really good wholesome early pop country music. It is such a style and was so great then, then it would be a crime not to continue it and you seem to have done that with your festive-music style-good time for all music.

You have really contributed very importantly to this site big time, to help keep what was so good in music and bring it out for us not to forget. It is a feeling in my soul that is part of me and your art is really keeping it alive. Love the words and music and how it blends together. Way to Go !

Well
there doesn't come any much higher recommendation that that great comment Bill and from a musician as your good self; thanks so much. Nice to know that there's still a place for the old style songs along with the new and it seems whatever I do the old style is in there somewhere. I loved the artists you mentioned along with many others of course and at that time there was a lot of individualism in the vocals, while today most of the top artists seem to sound the same with the same style of singing. Bring back individuality I say! LOL, Thanks again Bill for your continuing support.... it's more than welcome, regards M

Magic
I can hear this as a soundtrack to a Neil Jordan movie.
For some reason I'm got this image of someone falling (or getting thrown) down a stair, something to counterpoint the sentiment in the song.
Your have a very sweet voice I'm hearing Hank William's in there, maybe that's where the stairs thing comes from.
I'd reduce the effects on the guitar I don't think they're needed IMO.
I love the chorus, listened 3 times in a row, really love it.
Who's that guy on the stairs though.
Thanks for sharing. Brilliant.
