Description

This is a song written a few years ago when I was struggling with whether I should continue playing in cover bands, or truly explore performing my own songs exclusively. I am glad I chose the latter. I haven't been happier about music, mine or other peoples, since making that decision. I finally set it free.

Awesome track Guy
Wall of sound stuff going on in this one my friend. Great bottom end and a fantastic mix, with some very hot sounding guitar work here.

I love the lyrics on this Guy, but for some reason I didn't hear the the energy of the lyrics and music in you vocal. Seemed to me like you were holding something back, and that's not like you.

No matter, I still love the song. it speaks to my muse, and that's good enough for me.

You know Ed...
I almost didn't upload this BECAUSE of the vocal delivery. You are very intuitive. I tried to scream it out, but to me it sounded like.... well I don't know what, but is sure was bad. I tried to put some tension in this delivery although it seems I fell a little short. No biggie though, I heard through the grapevine a new young sensation here at MJ wants to sing it, but right now it's nothing more than a rumor, so I can't divulge her name...oooops I may have said to much already. Thanks for the listen and direction my friend.

I too hear touches of Jim Morrison in the vocal- assisted perhaps by the choice of effects/reverb on the vocals... big sound. Definitely a solid mainstream rocker. Good production and lots of stinging guitars.

There are a couple of spots where I'd go up in the melody ("You are no different than me" and the "finally free" line), and I'd change the "cause" to an "as" in the fourth to the last line and drop the "myself" from "I myself", but that's just some real minor suggestions.

Nice. I'm glad this was pointed out in the forums and glad you pointed out how it was being fairly rated. I do think this is pretty great. Very heavy. I sort of feel like it is a bit busy and a bit even, like the arrangement could use a little air in it at some point to give it a bit of space, if you know what I mean, but the guitar solo totally kills! You nailed it! And I like the vocal, very cool vibe there. Very cool! I'd rate this an easy 9-8-8-9

Thanks Jim, I really appreciate you taking the time. You have been one of the handful of people I listen to closely through their comments of other peoples music. Always honest and to the point. Thanks again for your time and your ears.
With regard to the song I suppose it might be said that one sacrifices certain things when trying to do it all yourself. You sound very much like an old song writing partner I teamed up with in the nineties and spent 6 wonderful years writing together. Really good times back then. My point is, that you are right of course, and I would have loved to hear it while in the throws of recording and arranging this. I will bear your advice in mind should this ever get a re record. Thanks again.

Hi guy, read your forum post before i checked this out. I decided to try out voting honestly and also give you a reason. Because I know I like to hear that stuff, and i received just what I was looking for when I received constructive criticism for my last post...... so here goes....

Sonwriting 8 - Very Good - I touches on themes not normally heard in mainstream radio, and it doesn't sound like a dummy wrote it.

Production/Performance 6 - production: I felt that there was some over-compression somewhere in the guitars and drums that made them sound like an MP3 compressed to like 48kbps, like all the dynamics and thickness were taken away, but vox and bass sounded ok to me. performance: I thought performance was very good so I evened the scors out to a 6.

Originality/Creativiy 8 It was original and creative and the sonwriting was original and creative, so i gave you an 8.

Overall Rating in genre: 7 - If I heard this on the radio I'd not change the channel. And that's saying something, so I gave it a rating of 7 as good. But if those guitar tracks were made more thick and full and less compressed, I might be convinced to raise my rating.

P.S. Do you remember The Headstones? Are they still around? This song reminded me of them.

Headstones ??? you're kidding right?????? I think you may be my new best friend. THANK YOU!! I am a huge fan, and I actually met Hugh Dillon once. He's a really cool guy. He is also one of the lead actors in a new show called Flashpoint. The Headstones are no more, but their music will live forever. Thanks for the comparison, and you're honesty, and your vote.

couple quick comments
only have time for a few quick comments... hopefully I'll make it back to expand on these:

1) Like the vox a lot, reminded me of Warren Zevon actually.

2) Guitar sound is really good, I can hear the compression but I don't think it is overcompressed as said before.

3) Nice lyrics and songwriting overall.

4) My major complaint is that I felt like you could have given the song a chance to "breathe" a little more. It feels to me that each section runs into each other a little too fast, like there was really no stop in the lyrical flow. I think the song would have better overall balance if you could more effectively bridge the sections with some exploratory instrumental work... but that's just my opinion.

Overall a very, very strong offering. One of the better rock songs on this site.

This is a really nice song. I played the mp3 version from the download in Windows Media Player.

I must admit that I've read through the comments before writing this, and am a bit perplexed at the differences in the critique where it is offered. I agree with several points made, and they stood out to me even before I read the others' comments. At risk of just parroting what others have said and you've already addressed:

You have a great voice, but this delivery lacks emotion and the vocal part is "all the way through" without giving much room for the music to just play.

Fine, killer guitar parts, really love the heavy progression with a sweet lead laid on top. But to my ear there is so much compression on them and the drum kit that the sound is muddled and drowned with any dynamics practically lost. I know a lot of people seem to like this method of producing their music, but I don't. I was watching my EQ meter as I listened and all channels were basically peaked and flat across the top throughout. It's a lame little meter but is a good indicator of what's going on.

I hate to even write a critique on this, because you are a great talent and truly a musician, compared to me. I definitely stand little ground to write critique when my own work is so amateur, so others will probably think, "where the hell does HE get off saying this crap".

I gathered from your forum post that you wanted critique. I'm glad you posted that, because I might have missed this cool song.

Excellent song and great performance ... no complaints from me! Lovely vocals. I understand what it's like to embark on your own music path after years of following a well trodden path (for me it was traditional songs rather than covers). this is damn near perfect!

first listen

i haven't read any of the comments yet, this is my first impression on minor nits.

0:09 - cymbal sounded swishy - and elsewhere

0:39 - the echo (which sounds cool by the way) fights itself right here

1:26 - some note on the guitar didn't sound quite right - it repeats a few times

somehow the vocals sound autotuned just a bit

GOOD: 3:01 - the echoes reinforce the lyrics nicely here and the time before

overall the low end seemed blurred a little

it's a very familiar concept

just before "toil away
you need a percussion hit (cymbal, snare, whatever) as a break between chorus and next verse (ditto later)

a very over-used phrase

at each time "and I am no different than you...
i feel like there needs to be a sonic change - something to point out that it's a main point. it could be a simple shift of EQ across the whole mix, or the drums, or something? dunno. i hope you know what i mean...

some high end resonance or feedback sneaks in around "der" of borderline

"Temptation's gonna shadow me
on "shadow" same thing

Best critique EVER!!!!
Wow man you are good, and while hitting on a couple things others did you also found a few that I was aware of but didn't think they stood out as much as they did. I am impressed you caught the auto tune (Melodyne) which I completely left out of the software credits specifically for that reason. GOOD catch man. I used it on some stray notes to give my vocal a better chance at sitting with the music. I never professed to be a singer and I need all the help I can get. I am actually excited about giving this song a work over to make it better and your suggestions will be considered when it is time. I am going to put forth a greater effort especially with the vocal because of this critique. I could probably sing it and do well without Melodyne, but I am lazy ha ha ha. I will try harder next time I promise ha ha ha. Thank you Smokey I really appreciate the time and effort it took for you to do this. My respect for you has deepened greatly.

4) My major complaint is that I felt like you could have given the song a chance to "breathe" a little more. It feels to me that each section runs into each other a little too fast, like there was really no stop in the lyrical flow. I think the song would have better overall balance if you could more effectively bridge the sections with some exploratory instrumental work... but that's just my opinion.

Tiny Man heard what I heard! - something needs to break apart the sections! even a 2/4 measure might do it!

cool hard-rocking tune. I like the guitar sound and the overall mix.
In contrast to some of the comments, I think the vocal delivery is fine. the vocal melody is in a fairly narrow range and I think that perhaps is what makes it a bit less dynamic than it could be. Perhaps in the chorus, a bigger interval jump to a higher note in spots, would liven things up? just a thought.
anyway, this was enjoyable song to listen to. Great work!

I love it. Awesome! It's so cool that you see that! You are not different, it drives me nuts how "the masses" and their psychology are so bound. I pretty much quit watching TV sometime in High School, and though there are some downsides to that, mostly you run the risk of getting "out of touch" I guess... but when you realize what it is you are "out of touch" WITH, gosh, it's not so bad. And you don't realize until you are free for awhile. Then it becomes clear. You would never bind yourself up like that if you realized. That kind of bound thinking (groupthink you might say) is pervasive, it's as if everything is judged by some false standard. I say NO! And so do you! Great job buddy. SET IT FREE! About the music, the riffs/hooks are definitely cool. As are the very driving drums. I think a lot of the energy here is coming from the percussion. If it wasn't for that it might drag, but it doesn't. Unfortunately I can't play like that! I listened twice, and I also like the "texture" on the electrics especially during the chorus. That kind of texture is something that sucks me in every time. I don't know why. It just has bite. Did you record this back then also? Or is this a newer version?
