Description
This is a song about someone wanting to get out of a relationship and not feeling that they can.
This is not a reflection on my current status by the way.
Additional guitar by Chris Knapman
I wanted Dusty Springfield to sing it but she wasn't available so I had to do it.
Anyway, hope you like it

Lyrics
Famous new beginnings
but I guess you’ve heard it all before
so who’d I think I’m fooling
when you know I’ll keep coming back for more

Cos when I try
I just break down and cry
so tell me there’s no place like home
You treat me cruel
And I’m a fool
to think I could ever leave you alone

The suitcase in the cupboard
reminds me that I’m free to go
but you just sit there laughing
do you know something I don’t know?

Cos when I try
I just break down and cry
so tell me there’s no place like home
You treat me cruel
And I’m a fool
to think I could ever leave you alone

Good Feel
Good feel on the vocals. This is the type song that pulls you into the groove. The lead is nicely placed and has a cool tone.
Thanks Mike

I lost count of how many vocal takes I did on this. The music was the easy-ish bit.

Cool tune
A very classic pop feel to it. Nicely done. Love your vocals. A lot of character in your voice which really lends to the tune.

Enjoyed it.

I tried to keep it all compact and not too fussy..but with slightly different elements to it.
Not my usual kind of stuff but glad it all came together.

Dusty
might have been a little ........................ absent for this I suspect :) I hear a lot of Lennon in the "When I try ...." bit. Tis is really a very nice little tune KB - Starts out sounding like it will be pretty straight up ballad material, but the shift into Lennon sound really livens things up. I like the way you sing this - and musically everything sounds great.

I must be slipping, but I haven't found any nits in a couple of songs today ;)

Nice one.

Dusty
It was only cos I was watching an old TV special with her on it the other day and I thought she'd fit it well.
It's more a song from a woman's perspective but I ended up singing it.
Anyway
Thanks for dropping in and your kind comments

I love simpler, more passionate stuff like this. Contrary to how it may sound, simple is not easy... in fact, to get a guitar, bass and laid back drums to fill out a whole song is hard, and the talent reserved for a special group of people (like REM who this reminds me a bit of... YEAH!). Very well done!

space
Sometimes I wish I could write stuff with MORE space in it..but I get carried away and start chucking little bits in.
I was erring on having the organ in as wasn't sure it needed it but kept it low in the mix so it didn't spoil it...I hope.

I originally nicked the drum beat from David Bowies Rock 'n Roll suicide but thought it best not to use someone else's drums so had to program them myself...and it took ages.
Anyway. Thanks for dropping and glad you liked it

Wonderful song writing
I can actually imagine this as a really cool motown song, and a hit. Great song. Like the understated but perfect fitting accompanyment together with a naturally gifted vocal. Downloaded. Thanks.

Yeah, has got that sort of Motown vibe to it...or Blues.
I couldn't decide what category to put it in so chose 'ballad' cos I couldn't think of anything else.

great vocals
Can you zip your voice and email it over? I wish I could sing like that. Nice song too by the way. Your vocals always tend to take away from the fact that the songs are great too. Sing the next one really badly so we can concentrate on the songwriting!

You sing through your brilliant music Smokey..but if I ever hear anything you do that needs vocals I'll be in there like a shot.
I'll try to sing badly on the next one ;-)

Translation
It's sometimes hard to imagine if the image of the lyrics in my head is the same as what they're perceived as by the listener.
I tried to keep it simple and get the image / message across

I've tried to write happy stuff but it don't come out right.
I suppose it's Blues as well..and might even work as a country song as well.
I couldn't decide what genre it was

This is brilliant
Yeah, really brilliant. Best lyrics I've heard on MJ in quite a spell.
Nice demented undertone to it that gives it a nice edge, a scent of Nick Cave perhaps.
I'd say the drums remind me more of "Five Years" rather than "Rock and Roll Suicide"
I love the musical arrangement, everything belongs.
Marvellous voice.

You may be right.
I think I got me samples mixed up.
I originally took the drums off a bowie at the BEEB CD but didn't want to get sued.
Anyway
