Have you ever been so taken by a melody that it permeates everything you do?
I recently worked on a song of Rebsie's called alætan (http://www.macjams.com/song/52098) where I was adding instrumentation to an existing vocal. During the process, I must have heard the wonderful melody many many times, with each successive time no less enchanting than the last. For the next couple of days it seeped into everything I tried to do, whether I picked up the guitar or sat at the keyboard... not in an annoying, cloying sense... but simply music that was demanding another form of expression. Finally, I sat at the keyboard, switched the instrument setting to orchestral harp and just let it flow out of me in one meditative sitting. I was somewhat surprised at the result and sent it to Rebsie the next day as a gift. I'm sharing it with you now because it is a wonderful testament to a fine singer and writer... and hopefully illustrates what a good melody can do on the subliminal level. My thanks to Rebsie for the inspiration.
