GIFT: Harp Meditation on a Rebsie theme

Description
Have you ever been so taken by a melody that it permeates everything you do?

I recently worked on a song of Rebsie's called alætan (http://www.macjams.com/song/52098) where I was adding instrumentation to an existing vocal. During the process, I must have heard the wonderful melody many many times, with each successive time no less enchanting than the last. For the next couple of days it seeped into everything I tried to do, whether I picked up the guitar or sat at the keyboard... not in an annoying, cloying sense... but simply music that was demanding another form of expression. Finally, I sat at the keyboard, switched the instrument setting to orchestral harp and just let it flow out of me in one meditative sitting. I was somewhat surprised at the result and sent it to Rebsie the next day as a gift. I'm sharing it with you now because it is a wonderful testament to a fine singer and writer... and hopefully illustrates what a good melody can do on the subliminal level. My thanks to Rebsie for the inspiration.

My deepest thanks
Humbled and deeply touched by this gift ... which although it orbits around my melodic theme is very much a star of your own creating, and it's your light that shines here. You've made it a thing of mesmerising beauty.

To a muse-worshipper like me, inspiring another artist is the greatest possible gift.

Rebsie's Theme
Brilliant.
My mother was a harpist and studied at the Maine Conservatory for Harp in the 1930's. I recall as a child being fascinated by it's machinations and whenever I hear the instrument I think of her. She gave up the harp for her husband and children... I never thought that she had to. But nevertheless, she did. She passed away in March of '08 and we took out all of her harpist photographs and displayed them during her funeral... wow - I had no idea that this song would evoke such memories... such is music and your healing works. Many thanks.

What a beautiful melody Daniel
You and Rebsie are doing masterful work together, and this piece is an outgrowth of those wonderful collaborations. A very haunting melody indeed my friend, and very well presented and played. Bravo to you both.

I understand
how a melody stays with you. I think that music is powerful and forces its way into our unconscious by gentle strides rather than by booming footfalls. Sometimes you must attend to the muse. There is something soulful here and you are so good to dedicate this to Rebsie. This is about all that is pure and lovely. Thanks.

You are a wordsmith...
..and your reading of this is spot on. Sometimes you have to creep up on something special and observe it in its natural habitat for a while. I did this when mixing the original song... then I plucked it like a ripe fruit and let it ferment. The dedication simply observes the origin.

Artistry
This is beautiful, and an incredibly expressive performance. I'm no harp expert (Cameron Kopf is; if you haven't already done this, you might consider sending him a note to ask for his thoughts), but it seems very idiomatic to me. I know I said it already, but it's extraordinarily beautiful. Great work here, and a very fitting (and generous) tribute to Rebsie's artistry.

I will seek out Cameron...
Thanks for your observations.... my time playing in an orchestra serves me well... and my playing here seeks to serve what is idiomatic about this wonderful instrument. Thanks for your kind comment!

Hi Daniel.......
You've excelled, once again, with this beautiful piece of music.

It manages to take my breath away.

Sublime creativity based on beautiful music.

Well done to Rebsie for the music and yourself for the added dimensions that you add.

Take care.

Very cool picture
to go with the delightful dreamy, serene type music. It really hold the attention from the get-go.
The harp really is amazing sounding, such peace and tranquility in this, that I don't hear too often hear is very welcome to hear! Like the adding of the bass sounds, nice oriental feel is those special spots. Love who the pic blends with the music. I find that is really priceless in way for all of us to use and benefit by. And you made terrific use of . . .

This from a great instrumentalist...
I have on many occasions enjoyed your playing - so to have your ear on this piece is very gratifying. I have played this melody on the guitar as well... but due to some unknown intuition, it seemed to belong to this instrument. I found out later that Rebsie is an able harpist too... so there you go!

have been away...
and missing all sorts of wonderful things, including Rebsie's original... but had a moment of calm at work to catch my breath, and this took it away. Very sweet melody, that is strangely warm and comforting too, or at least you played it that way, love the expressive rubato here. Also love how this sounds like it was written for HARP, not piano... often people just play the piano and switch the instrument to something else, without thinking about the performance characteristics and style of the instrument itself... this is very harp-friendly, or at least it sounds that way.

Excellent piece. Thanks to Rebsie too, for lodging a bit of muse in your ear.
ttfn,
Drakonis

Dear Eduard
Yours is one of the acutest ears on this whole site... it became a harp piece simply because that's how I heard it internally... for no other reason. I think you understand such intuitions n'est pas? I'm pleased that you find it natural in this idiom... sometimes it is a challenge to evoke the instrument through the keyboard... as you know!

To make this piece purely tonal and comfortable would have been a disservice and misunderstanding of its power. Slight friction and resolve is everything.... I simply serve. Thanks for your kind words!

I've always been a sucker for harp, and here it works well with a beautiful melody. Reminiscent of Alain Stivell - for me, a very good thing!

Filter
That's the way good music goes. From one musician, filtered through the next, touching off something in the listener, becoming part of the universe.

Lovely.
