Mercury Rising (New Vocal)

Description
Again going through my Garageband firewire disk (160GB of alternative takes, offcuts, song sketches) searching for inspiration I found this alternative vocal take of Mercury Rising. In fact this is the definitive vocal take and the one posted earlier to MacJams seems to be my guide vocal. I'm not sure why this never got posted here so now it is. Same intonation issues with the old strat copy are present, but I think they take a back seat to the better vocal presence.

Here's the original MacJams post text "Two things coincided to produce this song. I finally decided to try drop D tuning and I got a Line 6 Toneport GX. I bought the GX on a whim as I already have a great firewire interface but the GX comes with Gearbox which is a rather excellent software package. After playing around with the presets I found the one used here (called "Bad" after the U2 song) and started to put together this piece. It's rough and ready but I like it."

Lyrics
Could Adam know the truth of things
As he stepped into God's land?
The withering, the suffering
The forests turned to sand
Could our hope survive as our planet dies
And we tumble through the void
the ship we sail has lost it's way
The Earth has raised her voice

Mercury, Mercury Rising...
The race is run, the signs are there, our time is running out

The seas are coming back to claim
The mistakes that we made
And mountains sit impassively
As our presence starts to fade
The hourglass is running low
On our shabby, rented land
Mother Nature's taking it
From our ungrateful hands

Mercury, Mercury Rising...
The race is run, the signs are there, our time is running out

Very New wave
I suppose it is a bit U2 but also reminds me of some of the early british eighties scene, teardrop explodes, cure etc. Very nice if a little rough. Try the fender web page if your strat has a standard bridge, it has an excellent how to set up page, worked for me.

Great song
and lyrics and they ARE well sung (I too here shades of U2) apart from the mild 'bad intonation' (in parts) you mention on the guitar, I just wish I could play like that.... sounds just great to me and as I said, it's a great song, regards M

mercury rising
i really like the vox - and the ragged backups. overall a very Midnight Oil kind of feel. i think you should definitely take the time to re-record the guitar - i think you've got a couple new guitars since you recorded this right? i agree with guy that it's a well written tune. also very catchy - a good driving tune.

Ok Ok Ok...
... I'll make re-recording the guitars a priority for the next time I get some time in my studio. I think the Les Paul may be just right for the job.

OH,
the LES PAUL he says casually. I think i'll use that. Since i'm using the Gretsch to prop open the door and i've got my laundry hung on the SG. lol!

Yeah boy!
Great tune Paddy!

Yes, it is a bit rough. This tune is so good though, you may want to revamp it some. It would be worth the effort in my opinion.

Excellent lyrics. Fine vocals and harmonies.

Be well friend!

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
