Perigee Organdie (w/ Luna Trick)

Description
This song is a special event in that it marks the completion of all the tracks for my second album. Hurrah!

It's also been the longest to reach fruition - while other songs have whooshed through at a rate of knots, we've been working on this one for about four months. Not because it's been difficult - far from it - I think we were just enjoying the journey so much we didn't really want it to stop. But anyway, here it is.

PS ... 'organdie' is not a misspelling ... it's a Britishism. (Well, French really, but that's how we spell it here anyway.)

Daniel: classical guitar, cello
Rebsie: vocals

Lyrics
Perigee Organdie
lyrics by Rebsie Fairholm

Dawn alchemy
Rises to be
Pauses in the window
And sets herself free
A vision on a fragile thread of chi

Star of delight
Ploughed beyond sight
In the murmurs of longing halflight
A song of wisdom sweet
Cracks like twigs
Beneath our horses' feet

Perigee
Organdie
Alchemy

Roses borne of night
Lilies spun from light
Twine on the bowers of love
As imagination sings
An alchemical angel takes its wings

Green in the tree
Dream to the sea
And the nautilus deep in the sand
With its spiral hid inside
Silken rainbow burnish
With its face towards the tide

Perigee
Organdie
Dream to Be
Alchemy

Looking forward
to the CD Rebsie. Daniel's backing is lovely on this and vocally this is one of your strongest performances. I'm very pleased for you that, at long last, you have all the material for your second album.

Thank you Peter. The album has been two years in the making and it feels sooooo goooood to have reached this point with it. There's still all the tedious technical and administrative stuff to deal with, which will take another couple of months, but I have a real sense of achievement now!

My warmest thanks for your unstinting support, as you've helped me along on the whole journey.

Ahhhhh...
Lovely guitar work, and the cello adds weight to those bass tones. Then that delicate, filmy voice of Rebsie enters. This is a confection of sound. The picture of a dew-drenched spiderweb hangs in the background. The Latin sounds that develop are wonderful. I really don't know how to define this style, and that's a good thing. It had a very organic feeling - LIke the song grew into everything exactly in its place.

Rebsie said 198 days ago (May 13th, 2009)

I love the imagery you evoke Kristine, you are very perceptive. The simple and intimate beauty of nature was very much in my mind when I wrote the lyrics, and it did all grow together organically. It also pleases me that the style defies definition ... we try to plough our own furrow and are always happiest when we can't decide what genre to post under!

Daniel's guitar playing is sublime. It was the seed from which everything else grew.

Well, Rebsie...
I think this is one of your very best efforts. The vocals are among your strongest and surest, with good pitch and phrasing. I also think that this is one of your most airy arrangements--light but full, everything's got a purpose, and everything's got a space within which to be heard. It's also a more "three dimensional" mix than I've heard from you in the past; there's a sense of depth as well as width to the recording. I think you hit the harmonies perfectly. The cello against the classical guitar tracks is really, really nice... in a folkish/classical place at spots, and then almost edging towards a bossa nova or jazz feel at spots... You and Daniel have done a really nice job here....

Rebsie said 198 days ago (May 13th, 2009)

I'm thrilled to see you here Ed ... your insightful comments are always hugely appreciated. A more three-dimensional mix than I've done in the past? Um ... that'll be because I got Daniel to mix it! I couldn't get the main vocal to sound right so I just sent it all to him and he knew exactly what to do. The harmonies, by contrast, came together with a spontaneity which astounded me ... it's four unedited improvised tracks just slapped together. And the airy arrangement arose because the original guitar track was so beautiful I didn't want my voice to distract from it too much, so I tried to leave space for his playing to shine through. I really appreciate your comment ... and hope to hear some new music from you soon.

I mean this as a compliment:
Your singing and the "flavor" of this wonderful song remind me very much of the 1960-early 70's singer Claudine Longet. There is a breathy-breathless quality to this number that is very VERY comfortable, Rebsie, and so pleasant to listen to. You have also created some dreamy lyrics that evoke a softness of nature and love that is universally appealing while evocative of personal feelings. I LOVE the arrangement that Daniel has created to back you on this number, too. The cello is, naturally, beautifully twined around your vocal, and the rhythmic guitar (and wood blocks) keep the general flow of the number bubbling lightly along until the end. What a marvelous creation you two have divined here! Best of luck with the CD. I'm sure you will let us know when it's available.
Peace.

Rebsie said 192 days ago (May 18th, 2009)

Thank you Paul. I have to confess to not being familiar with Claudine Longet. The breathy tone, well, we have my asthma to thank for that! Being asthmatic doesn't affect my singing voice directly but it makes it very sensitive to changes in the weather and seasons. Some very erratic sunny and rainy spells recently have temporarily given it a softer and huskier tone.

I wholeheartedly agree with your kind words about Daniel's arrangement. I fell in love with the guitar track as soon as I heard it and the cello is the icing on a very accomplished cake.

Beautiful as always! Great work together, I love both of your tunes, so this is quite a treat! I don't know how to say this without sounding insulting to the past (and that is not my intention) but this may be the best tune either of you have done... at least IMHO. The rest are all great too!

Not insulting at all Nigel, that's exactly how we feel ... that we're able to do stuff together which is in a different league from what we could do separately. It's been such an exhilarating discovery that we're now working together full time. So actually we're thrilled by your comment, and humbly hope you'll continue to enjoy what we do.

Nice!
Great guitar Daniel, and Rebsie, this is quite a departure from your usual style - very lovely harmonies in a contemporary context rather than the olde worlde style we're used to. Your voice really is beautiful Rebsie - especially so on this. The harmonies just get better and better each time around - tight but flowing.
