Description
I had a musical reason for doing this but no lyrics until they fell into my head while watching the news one night. The Cronulla Sharks used to be “my team” in the NRL (National Rugby League), although I’ve lost interest in football over the past 10 years. Recently a scandal has broken out about the (allegedly) very poor behaviour of some of the team during a competition trip to Christchurch in New Zealand some years ago. The allegations are based on a report of (and there’s no delicate way of saying it) group sex in a room at The Racecourse Hotel with a girl who may or may not have been a willing participant, but who has been very shattered by the experience some years after the event. The scandal has ruined some reputations and some lives and has opened a veritable Pandora’s box of allegations of similar events involving other teams and other sports. Pretty appalling behaviour all round from what I can see.

Anyway, that’s where the lyrics came from.

Lyrics
Shark Attack
© 2009 Neil Porter
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
They chase an oval ball
They break the rules, they play to win
The Sharks were loose in Christchurch town

Far too young with too much money
Went looking for some fun
Now I don’t have to tell you honey
The Sharks were loose in Christchurch town

When The Racecourse closed its doors that night
Clare was heading home
Two Sharks circled for the kill
The Sharks were loose in Christchurch town

One by one they had their way
They came from near and far
Those Sharks smell prey a mile away
The Sharks were loose in Christchurch town

They were on the plane for home next day
Those Sharks thought they were men
They won the game but lost their way
And Clare won’t be the same again

The Sharks were loose in Christchurch town
Clare won’t be the same again
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
Clare won’t be the same again

The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
Clare won’t be the same again

The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
Clare won’t be the same again

The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
The Sharks went down to Christchurch town
Clare won’t be the same again

Dr Jiguma on the funk. A very sweet head bobbing sound. Guitars are really laying it in. Bravo Neil.

Firsties for John!
Thanks for the visit John - I've been so busy lately that I decided to focus on this one rather than do other stuff at MJ - I hope to catch up with missed songs soon.

There are 8 guitar tracks in all - I made 5 loops and then used them for richness in the sound, then there are a rhythm track and a lead track and finally a solo track.

Lots of fun to make, but somehow I seem, once again to have stumbled on an unhappy situation for lyrical content.

"Head-bobbing" is good :)

Terrific
The guitar on this is really sweet - such a collection of different, but complementary, riffs and hooks interplaying and bolstering each other. Then add that really sweet solid groove. The drums sounds really nice (love that snare sound) and the bass is funky and spare, just right for the song. Dark subject matter, executed with silky funky skill. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

Pleased you enjoyed this. The drums are based on a single midi loop which I then played around with to add highlights and changes of feel - I was really pleased with the richness of the cymbals in particular. I played around with the Space Designer on the drums and have found some nice settings that seem to add a lot of depth to the kit.

Glad you liked my guitar collection :)

jumping the shark
good topic. it covers a lot of sports figures these days. what's up with that? too much cash and super id I guess.

excellent groove. Kind of motownish. but what is interesting is the blend of the country rock guitar licks that are sharp and biting.

everything sounds great here Neil, and tightly woven I might add.

Thanks for the listen - always enjoy reading your comments. "Jumping the shark" isn't an expression I've heard before, but I Wiki-ed it and maybe I am :)

I cut my teeth on country rock - just glad I remembered some of the licks the guitarists played.

I could...
...sit here and go on for ages about what I think about overpaid, overtestosteroned, thugby league players, let alone all sport 'show ponies', who get away with behaviour which would see anyone else locked up for years. It makes me sick how sport fans revere such disgusting creatures, & corporate sponsorship outweighs the law, let alone human decency.

These revolting characters, to make matters worse, are 'role models' to thousands of children....

Sadly, there's also the other side of the coin, where some people try to exploit the celebrity status of these individuals...nuff said.

There, now I've had my rant!

Oh, btw, terrific groove Neil!

(Perhaps this should be the new Cronulla anthem?- would it make any difference?, I guess not, sadly)

I'm always especially interested in how my songs grab you, and am really happy that you like it. The guitars are done direct, although I'm getting close to being able to replicate the sounds on my Vox live - I'm finding I'm more and more able to tweak the guitar sounds in Logic Studio to get the sort of dirty but round sounds I'm after.

Thanks a lot for the listen and comment Jim,

Ya get some Diddley, and some Nashville, add some Mo'Town spice to taste, and there ya go. Now I hear Paul Shankling all the time, this on the other hand is different. Is that John McCain vocal styling? Thank you this knock. Well mannered and carefully produced it is excellent throughout.

Thanks for having a listen. I don't think I've heard of Paul Shankling or John McCain, but I'll do a bit of a search and find out. I tend to just work within my limitations - especially as a singer and as a guitarist, neither of which are really my specialities. As I mentioned to Steve above, I'm glad you noticed the production - it's taken a while to know a bit about that.

Group behavior
One has to take inspiration where one finds it : )

I like the multiple-guitar approach, say, compared to a single scorching solo, because it underscores the song's idea of multiple sharks attacking. This is not a story about the bombastic strike of a Great White, but rather the relentless demeaning devastation brought on by group (gang?) behavior. I think the guitars reflect that reality.

Another point where I thought the music and the lyrics nicely connected was when you sing "Two sharks circled" and the accompanying guitar lick is played using a doubled-string. Intentional or not, it's a nuance that caught my ear!

"They won the game, but lost their way" - good writing.

When I was in Western Samoa, one of the available highlights was to swim with "harmless" black tip reef sharks. Seems like an oxymoron to me.

This crap happens much too often. At least we get a great tune outta of it. Clare gets nothin.

Really excellent funky arrangement. You seem to be quite at home in this relatively new element bro. Guitar work throughout is stellar. Vocals are in fine form. Chorus has a bit of a hook to it. Nice!

Well, if you gotta tell a story,
this is the way to do it Neil. Certainly got my attention, with the easy Funk-Rock feel of this. It's too bad about the reason for the lyrics though, I hope Clare will someday recover.

It's amazing what happens when too much testosterone runs amuck, and too many young men forget to respect the human side of another person.

Great job on those guitars for sure my friend and the whole song, even if the subject matter is distasteful.

You are a crusader

Cool Neil,
I like the solo guitar playing this "show biz kids" notes.
Stylish! :o)
I like also what you`re doing on drums, always the right choice.
What I don`t understand is that you still use the Behringer mixer.
I use a Mackie 1202 Micro Series and it`s much, much, much better sounding. (I bought it at eBay 150 Euro, it`s really worth it, the mic preamp rules!)
I used the Behringer before and it was a quantum jump, believe me! :o)
Great work Neil, thumbs up!

Hi Ingo
Thanks for the comments - drums are increasingly becoming one of my favourite parts of a project. They certainly take up a significant percentage of the time I take.

I haven't really had cause to think about replacing the Behringer yet - we use a Presonus FireStudio with the band for recording, and I don't hear any major difference in the results. The Behringer started out being a short term option, but seems to be doing the job so far. What differences did you notice with the Mackie?

Looking forward to the I.J.W (and Alan?) draft :)

The main difference
is surely the mic preamp. Voices (especially) sound better, (hard to explain in english) more "quiet", if you know what I mean??
Or is the right word "discrete"? I dunno, perhaps it is just religion, who knows? :o)

Cool tune and a funky rhythm. I like how you are using your music to bring an important social topic to light. Very socially responsible of you.

The guitar parts all work well together - even though they are all doing something different. Your vocals, while not flashy, compliment your songwriting and playing style perfectly. I think that of your tunes I have heard so far this one is my fav. Good job, Neil - thanks for sharing this with us.

I wasn't expecting this story, at all. When the music started, i was just thinking how good it sounded, as your music always does. For some reason, the title didn't forewarn me, i think i was expecting something amusing. (I never read lyrics right away.)

When i started to realize what was happening in the song, it was piercing and disturbing. Like... a shark.

Neil,
I used to follow and play rugby union when I was a teenager (feels like another life for me now). Unfortunately the macho culture hasn't changed. This was the sort of thing I hated when living in Oz. It's kind of a reminder to one of the reasons I left and moved here.
Great tune and great lyrics (sad but true). Very catchy with excellent guitar riffs. love the funky guitar sound and great solo(s) - truly, and nice guitar echo effects. The groove really moves along and love the ending (vocal harmonies) . I think this is one of your best songs (just my 2 cents) - probably not even worth that.

Finally...
...I get to sit down in a quiet moment and give this a listen. I think you've done a great job on this, Neil, and what I'm liking and admiring about what you're doing these days is that all of your 'great jobs' don't sound the same.

I almost feel wrong in saying so, due to the serious nature of the lyric, but the groove is slinky and perfect. I love the way you're working the Telecaster lines in this, and I love the way the bass works with the Telecaster lines. I'm listening on my best headphones, and this is perhaps your best mix so far--again--in that it sounds clean, professional, clear and it doesn't sound all in your face. The cymbals sound like cymbals. The balance is perfect. Nothing sounds like a cartoon of an instrument.

You're also getting Hemingway-like in terms of telling a story and knowing how to do that in a spare way that knows what to leave out... It's not overwritten or overwrought...

So. Good one.

Ed

Shawn Colvins guitar player/producer... is my textbook guitar producer... i love what he does on her albums... I think this is one of the finest guitar productions I've heard around here... I love that compressed tele sound... and you weave it in and out of the story like one of the main characters... really fabulous and subtle guitar work... If I had played this I would be more than satified...

when we were young we wanted to rip... but now if I can lay in the perfect comp and propell the song forward, I'm a happy man...

What a fine fine tune - despite the subject matter, you pull this off in such a way that the listener has to hear the story and understand the point you are making. Brilliant guitar work, and those clean drums - a lot of work clearly went into this.

I'm using a Logic Studio preset "Spacious Solo" with some extra tweaking for the solo guitar, and other tweaking for the rhythm parts. The main variable seems to be that I change the UK 2x12 Open" speaker setting to "Analog Simlation" in Guitar Amp Pro (mic position "off centre" and mic type "Condensor"), and wind up the "presence" control a lot. Volume on the Tele is on full and tone cut back about a quarter.

I added some Space Designer (1.4s_Nice Room 1.398s) for the rhythm sound (LHS).

It's all about experimenting really :)

The first few bars made my face giggle out-loud
and I sit here by myself with this gleaming soul chuckle happening inside, too! I see your name and I smile, Neil! I know so'em good is about to tickle me good inside and indeed, it did. I don't doubt that both things are happening! What you do is food for my soul and I never leave your page in quest of dessert... It's always all good! Nice stuff, man! Very nice. Cheers! Dion
