My first attempt at long distance collaboration. I wrote the lyrics

Lyrics
I Hunger for the Thorn

My Chocolate bittersweet,
gnaws on the dregs,
The smell of cheap perfume,
I Hunger for the Thorn.

On sunset drive
the wipers sing
the tires hiss

I miss the curve
and hit the gas

Oh Lovely Bittersweet
on crimson legs
the bottles been sucked dry
I Hunger for the Thorn

Nursing the wound
the bandage weeps.
The bill comes due

The envelope torn
is cast aside.

My heaven Bittersweet
the sour sting
others want the sweet bouquet
I Hunger for the Thorn

lyrics c. 2009 David Damroze

I see that you

just posted this. Is this industrial light? Love Mrs. Morticia Addams. Kind of a tribal beat.
I was head bobbing. Thanks.

Surreal
Well, there's a smack in the face after listening to hard rock all morning. The sparse arrangement sent me into a trance. Char delivers, taking a few chances, which is good to see (hear). And the lyrics ... those are LYRICS. And they don't rhyme. Love it. The echoey outro is just perfect. Il est merveilleux. Tish, that's French!

Oh Reggie,
Cool lyrics. I did try to understand the meaning behind them. Damroze writes well. Thank you for listening. Merci, mon ami.

Not my cup of tea,
but who the hell is this great singer?
Music without chords, vocals try to create some, very nice.
Could be a bit more variation in my opinion.
The weirdo part (end) is just, uhm... weird!! :o)
Overall a very nice collab, congrats!

I felt an
excitement at the ending. I like that part the best. This was different for me. Thank you, Ingo. Much appreciate the listen.

Thanks..
I actually did a few different variations on this , some more complex.
But, I wanted the focus to be on Chars voice and the feeling and imagery. I think of it as the setting for a precious jewel.

Thanks for the positive comments.
and send a lot of love to Char for working hard to get this out. She's having a hard time getting her mic to work with her computer and after several tries we had to use tracks from the web mic. I know it's been very frustrating for her so I am even more impressed by the interpretation she gave with nothing but some words and a drum rack.
Everyone tell her how much she kicks ass :-)

dystirbed
twisted lyrics whipped by relentless beats, Char chants as the sacrifice, writhing and chained to the plank, is carried by firelight to the abyss.

Apropos backing rhythms, and Char, way out on a limb for you, but you seem to do well out here in the gothic moonlight too. Oops, Apropos is French... Morticia always does that to me. :-)

Maybe he heard
No Eden Here and asked me to do this because of the stand alone phrasing. See what you started? Such a trouble maker! Worst thing... and I've been at it again, no luck on the mic performance issue. Thank you for going to the trouble of coming back. Love ya. :)

stark
it sounds sort of Indian or Oriental - having only vocals and percussion and no other harmonic support works really well to support the mood of starkness

this is a great song

thanks

some detailed comments:

first of all, this is just my opinion, feel free to ignore any, or all, of this!

the vocals are consistently on key, but often i felt that phrases were entering late - it would be nicer if some syllables aligned precisely with the percussion

the vocal recording is pretty good - the words are clear, maybe sometimes a little over-enunciated
around 1:00 to 1:16 - seems over-enunciated
around 2:20 to 2:38 - seems more natural

ordinarily, i would say "just relax when you sing" - but for this song's mood, maybe the sense of tension works to support it

technically there is some distortion especially at "My heaven Bittersweet" and on the last phrase

i really like that echo at the end!

the percussion supports the vocals very well. i kind of wished it varied a little more than it does - but not too much more - or it would break the mood (maybe the breaks before each verse need to fade to near silence?)

the opening sound seems to be a familiar loop - which is OK by me - but it could suffer immediate rejection by some listeners who have no tolerance for loops

the ping ponging perc is great - especially on headphones! nice!

around 1:28 - a drum part seems to be a little bit too delayed
around 2:28 - something out of time in the background?

the lyrics gradually paint a picture of masochism - at first i thought we were getting a story (the phrases about driving on sunset drive) but then it became clear we are getting a snapshot of a moment frozen in time.

the phrases individually work well, but when combined they occasionally create some unusual thoughts - which i found distracting.

for example, "My Chocolate bittersweet, gnaws on the dregs" - chocolate that gnaws?

or "I miss the curve and hit the gas" - it seems sort of suicidal, yet the story continues?

still, in its entirety the words work really well.

Lyrics
are open too may interpretations . I will say that mush of the imagery derives from a preference for dry wine over sweet ;-)
My Chocolate, bittersweet could also be a brown skinned lover .
Many of the technical flaws are from Chars only having the webmic to record with.
I decided to take that into account when arranging the song. The vocals are selected from a couple of different tracks that she sent.
This is in NO WAY a critique of her vocal interpretation - just a statement of technical fact.
Other shortcomings are due to my having about 3 weeks experience with GB. I think I'm learning though :-)

I so appreciate
your critique. Feel free to offer me such and never fear. I only did two takes. Damroze worked with the first one right away and was excited about it. I begged him, literally , to let me try to fix a couple words where I was trying not to cough. He replaced those, Saved me a lot of embarrassment. I love the ending with all of that echoing. I haven't been sleeping, trying to brainstorm why the MAudio mic won't record when the interface is working perfectly. In the middle of this, this opportunity came. I would love to have another crack at it, if Hell freezes over, because that is what it will take for this mic to work. Thank you, Smokey. Thank You, Damroze :)

yo
nice char, i might have to get you to do those blood curdling
screams for "the horror" after all, along with some lines.
your voice is suited nicely for these types of tracks. the track itself
was a tad to minimal for me, but it works as the voice is suppose to
be the forefront. Some added sfx and ambience would be dope though.
cool stuff, enjoyed.

Great lyrics
and what a great singer too. Very trip hop which is what i love. Difficult to believe that you are making this with just a web mike. Can't wait to hear the difference it will make with the real deal. Beautiful and surreal just my bag. When you hold onto to the notes that is where it is at for me, there is something about the vibrato of your voice that is electrifying. Lovely.

Damroze said 3091 days ago (June 1st, 2009)
that vibrato
is what first hooked me - something Edith Piaf-ish that made me think of sour wine and hunger for love. ( the song is not really about suicide or masochism - unless you want it to be :-)

What about that
tribal beat David thumped in there? He is a novice at his program. I was going nuts and couldn't get results from a god mic and so used the inferior one. Glad you like David's lyrics. I had to weave a meaning behind them to project some emotion. I got wine and moods of suicide. We all think, "What if I did that"? Thank you. :)

Very exotic
sounds in the backing on this... just love the choice of percussion sounds and the beat. I told Char ages ago that her voice was really different and interesting (love that vibrato) I get a mental picture of a huge traveling exotic 'caravan ' of people and carts and things with Char being carried aloft on some kind of sedan chair as she sings of her pain (while being fed grapes LOL). It's strange that the words do marry with the rhythm, because one belies the other and yet it sounds great, cheers M
