Lyrics
Candlelight Becomes You

© Donna Devine 2009

(v1)
Darling, candlelight becomes you
It softens all the lies
Makes all the more disarming
The deception in your eyes

(v2)
Oh, you’ve never seemed so loving
And I wish I didn’t know
How well you’ve been preparing
To place the final blow

Chorus
Dinner for two
What a masquerade
Each of us afraid
Of what the other might do
Goodbye is never painless
Though yours will come as no surprise
Yes, candlelight becomes you
It softens all the lies / softens all the lies

(v3)
The red rose on our table
Begins to slowly wilt
A lonely parody of love
Intimation of your guilt

(v4)
What a fool I would have been
Not to see how you had changed
How your fire turned to ashes
How my future’s rearranged

Bridge
You think I want to make you suffer
Darling, but I don’t
You hope I’ll make this easy for you
Darling, but I won’t

Chorus
Dinner for two
What a masquerade
Each of us afraid
Of what the other might do
Goodbye is never painless
Though yours will come as no surprise
Yes, candlelight becomes you
It softens all the lies / softens all the lies

whatever you pour yourself into it takes a beautiful shape. Enjoyed the vibe immensely. Very lovely backing tracks, lyrically strong and your warm voice just melts me like butter.

so sad and beautiful
Your voice is so dang good it just melts away any troubles of the day. So smoothe and just gorgeous. Great lyrics here and I really enjoyed the listen. Thank you for sharing it with us. I think a goodbye from your music would be very painful indeed......

Sweet
Sweet and bittersweet, charming and sad - what a feast. The lyrics on this are really smart and elegant ("candlelight becomes you/ softens all the lies" - masterful...) and the delivery is really spot on - emoting without overpowering, and tinged with sadness but free of self-pity. Lovely guitar (what kind of effect is on there?) and really nice, tasteful solo. Very cool. I always know I'm going to enjoy one of yours, and this is no exception. Excellent. Nicely done. Peace.

Beautiful composition
and wonderful musicianship with superb lyrics. You really have a knack for finding the perfect accompanyment to your even more perfect silky voice. This is just a classic.
Thanks for the download.
Cheers

goodbyes
fantastic lyrics - would have been easy to make this too cute but the rhymes are traditional yet honest - same for the playing - edgy enough to be authentic but what you'd fully expect for this type of tune. and your vox of course are beautiful.

Hi Anne......
It's been a while since I left a word or two. This is beautiful and so perfect that I am enjoying playing it on repeat as I type this. The rhythm and backing sit perfectly with the lyrics/singing.

It's great that you're back here in MJ-Land. I've enjoyed all your recent work but haven't said so until now.

Take care.

Just right...
How fortunate for Rob and Donna to have a singer of your depth and skill to bring their wonderful creation to a level it might not otherwise achieve.

Everyone is fully believable here (except the antagonist). It brings us all in. Great track. As always, your vocals bring a song much more meaning...

Captures a moment perfectly
Whew - I'm brought down thinking of the couple and their situation. The feeling you convey is dead on powerful. The music sets such a scene here with the minimalist accompaniment and the tender handling of the vocals. Harmonies in this one come like icing on a delicious cake and the guitar work weaves a solemn tapestry as a backdrop.

C'est si beau.
