Voyage of the Susan Elizabeth

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is a thematic companion to my recent "Glacial Age" and part of a larger effort to dive into what I can make my guitars do. It's dedicated to the Susan Elizabeth, my friend's 30-foot mistress (aka a '70s-vintage C&C sailboat), which takes us on 2-man trips between Long Island and Nantucket and points in between. While the sailing is generally smooth, this piece offers a patch of heavy seas and screaming wind. (The song art is a shot from one of those nasty moments in a rising storm off Newport, R.I. in '06)

FYI 1: I set this song to some fresh video from the July '09 sailing trip to Nantucket here on YouTube.

FYI 2: What inspires you? If it's natural forces liek wind and water, feel free to share your audio, video or verbal inspirations in this MJ forum thread. Thanks for your criticism and comments.

FYI 3: Collab in progress... Check out Steve's - er, "Tonestones" - interim mix. Still working on a "final" (is it EVER final?!)

too bad about
the drummer backing out, but that's the way it goes sometimes. I would have loved to hear this with the drum track.

This is a real musical adventure Bro, with some super fine guitar work from the "SixString Assassin"

Love the new ending too.

Tupperware & spoons?
Well, I may just drag out the spoons, Tupperware and castanets on this one if I can't get the right loops. I'll figure something out if the drummer doesn't surprise me. I just want this "on the record" before I unveil it to the Susan E's captain next week.

This is a top notch strat work along with the martin what a rich tone
the whole bunch of these guitars have ...I really didnt feel a need for
the drummers ...perfect perfect production ...Deepest Bow !!!!

works well without drums
Your acoustic strumming makes a great groove. I dig the melody lines you do on the electric. Very powerful. If you're looking for loops... I've used betamonkey for a while... they have some good ones that might suit your needs.

Great track
I love noise when it's right played, as this is. Sorry about the drums, it should be cool to hear it with it...Cheers

Your
guitar playing does sound a lot like Duane Howe. This would be great with drums (maybe Butch Bruford?)but it does sound perfect by itself.Great gutar tone and playing.Only thing is... if you cross Yes with ABB at the Fillmore how do you end up with a 3 min long song?

Yes + Allman Bros. = literal LOL!
Yes + Allman Bros. = literal LOL!
Thanks John, I tried SO hard to supress my laughter at EVERYTHING you wrote (Because I'm working), but I still laughed literally out loud. Let's decode this one for all:
--Guitarist "Duane Howe" = the late, great Duane Allman (Allmans) + Steve Howe (Yes)
--Drummer "Butch Bruford" = Butch Trucks (Allmans) +Bill Bruford (Yes).

To which I'll add: Don't forget "Jaimoe White" = Alan White (Yes' other drummer) + Johnny "Jaimoe" Johanson (Allman percussionist)!

Nantucket sleighride
What a unique sounding composition this is. Lots of cool chord transitions. Yeah, a little of the Allmans in there. I think a drum track would complete this, but it's not absolutely necessary. The acoustic strumming provides the rhythmic sense quite effectively. That minor chord at the end is at first disorienting, but once it sets in, very nice.

Resolve or hang on the 4th?
Thanks, Reggie. About your dissonance over the last minor chord (w/a touch of diminished), I debated leaving it on the "4th" in the cycle ... if you listen to the fade-out, you'll actually hear it resolve back to the original, major 1st chord & key. I'm glad that got a rise, though... I think!

BTW: Nice semantic omlette: Nantucket trip + the tune's status as sequel to a "glacial" tune = NAntucket Sleighride. And I live in (surrounded) the Mountains, and as we know, Mountain did Nantucket Sleighride. (Which was great and now it's stuck in my head!)

caught in a storm
a powerful ode to Susan Elizabeth. Having been caught in a vicious open water storm once (once is all it took) I'm glad to see you choose to re visit the joys of being back on the water. For me I'm still working on the courage to take a shower :-) I like your concept for the drums. I think that would work perfectly. The bass sound you achieve with the Strat is pretty damn cool as well.

Loving the Coast Guard
John, thanks for the feedback. If you have nautical charts handy for Buzzards Bay, look about 5 or 10 miles north of Cuttyhunk (tip of the Elizabeth Islands) for Elisha Ledge. It was right around there, where we got caught in a storm advisory--fishing boats much larger than our cruiser were ducking for cover, but we were trapped against the tide and wind when we narrowly missed a giant "pod" of fishing pot buoys strung together in a cluster much bigger than a buoy. The fog was all snot and spit and we hated to give up but man, this was one instance where we LOVED those guys on the coast guard cutter.

Hell, even the Stephen Hawking voice of NOAA radio sounds kindly to us now--except for the fact that it's never accurate.

I may come back and delete-and-update this comment to give you better coordinates if you want to, but can't find Elisha Ledge. It gets hairy-rocky up in there! Also, I may post a movie clip of some of this, before it got too rough.

and epic. Nice mix of different tones, especially considering it's all guitar. Acoustic chord progression ,or stream, is very nice. Now what drummer could do this justice, all the ones I'm thinking of are six feet under... or they've turned to green globules....Very nice work.

great track!
I really dig the acoustic work. but your playing knocks it out of the water. This flows like a classical piece. The music totally tells the whole story. From the danger of the choppy waves to the serenity of coming out of the storm. It's good to be back on land, but can we do it again?

Landlocked
Hey, Andy, my line in the sand for a bunch of music I have in mind is to ego-out on ALL handmade, all guitar music to srech my limits. If I get drums in, 'm leaning away from even loops. One day I might just use my guitar for a bongo! As far as taking you along, I'm landlocked in Tennessee... I'd bring you along but it ain't my rig. Suezie E. belongs to the cap'n in Long Island!

Skip-perrrrrr!
Naw, Bill, I'm just "Gilligan," the skipper's an old college friend from the 70s. He's out on the North Fork of Long Island. We missed 2 years of our annual summer sail but this year was a great one... if you want to see the boat (which I couldn't shot video of while on it!) I will send you to a .mac (okay, MobileMe) gallery with pix. It's fun being one of the smallest boats in any harbor we pull into, from Montauk to Block Island to Nantucket.

If you like this, it can't suck.
See subject line, and let me add that you're all pro... It makes my day that you like my guitaring when you seem to have worked with far more accomplished, pro shredders. On drums and bass... I spelled-out the details in the Hardware and Software sections--which I see have temporarily disappeared at the moment as Simon continues tweaking the song page interface.

DRUMS: I have been hoping Alan White would call me. BASS: I did it using effects on my Strat (before I got a bass a few weeks ago). Let's talk... check your mailbox and thanks again.

Cool!
I like this sort of the way it is, but I do like the concept you have for the drums. I think the bass might need to be re-done to go along with the drums, as it could be integrated a bit better that way. You do indeed manage to capture a great nautical feel but still keep it high energy!

Really nice guitar work.
Great sounding guitars. The Allman brothers influence is strong. I love that old southern rock. This one reminds me a little of Little Feat, lots of interesting chord changes, etc. Yeah, it could use drums, but it does pretty well just with the acoustic.
