Lyrics
hey, i left that town so long ago.
anyway, i was too dumb to know what I was letting go
but memories sure can burn for a long time
it's strange to think about if i'd have stayed
strange, if I still worked down at yr fathers place
maybe you'd live with me but i wonder if you're still there
in cherryvale
sometimes when im travellin hiway to hiway
i find myself drving home the long way
even tho there's nothin there to see
its strange thinking about it never makes me cry
its strange more like an ache that starts from deep inside
a place as dark as the woods we walked so free
in cherryvale
everytime i see the exit sign it'll cross my mind
maybe i should turn and go in
but i'll keep driving by that bend
cuz i'm never going back there again
to cherryvale
cherryvale, I'm never going back there again

Cool tune Relic
Like your mellow laid back style of singing. Acoustics sound great too. The changes and the folky style really work well.

Liked this a lot.

Thanks for the kind comments LL. I think there were new strings on the guitar when I recorded them so long ago :) I change them every few years...

Tasty
Sweet folk-pop vibe here. Love the harmonies and guitars chiming guitars, sing-along chorus. Shades of Matthew Sweet, but you got your own style, bro. Enjoyed this a lot.

slice o' indie folk
sweet matthew sweet vibe and LOVE that single twangy note you throw in there on the comearound between verses. You own these types of indie folk tunes dude and i'm happy to download it and throw it on the ipod. Great sound on the acoustic btw.

acoustic
it's a Guild acoustic... my wife gave it as a Xmas present a few years ago... the best gift I've ever gotten by far! The matthew sweet influence is probably going to be a continuing thing for better or for worse...

Really Nice!
I detect a little Byrds and CSN(&Y) influence here. You pulled it off very nicely.

Fav'd.

Cheers,
Jim

After 5+ listens, I dig it but want a v.2
You say this is far from perfect, but the song itself is all there. I do have nagging issues with how you treat your vox and mixes, though--am I listening with irrelevant ears? Very possibly. But I can't help wanting to grab the board and tone down the vox (and the bkg vox even more) and do something to tie or "bleed" the tracks into each other for a more unified whole. (Remember analog bleed!?) Maybe that's master-track reverb or compression, or maybe some slide or steel guitar like that KILLER break at 1:10 in "Orange Sunshine" ... or both! ... I think would help the tracks gel and mesh better. One of my favorite parts here are our lead guitar riff choices and mixing, it shows your good judgement and leaves me wanting more, which is usually just enough. (Wish I could do that myself!)

BTW instead of Matthew Sweet I'm hearing something like a Jay Ferrar / Sun Volt. And fyi, check into Fred Eaglesmith for his rockier as well as solo acoustic stuff, and PLEASE see him if you ever can. Thanks for letting me on my very enjoyable half-dozen or so listens. Ad it's a small thing but I love that neck-yanking whammy on the last, ending chord!

thanks so much for your thoughtful comments.
vocal volume is a hard thing for me to get a handle on.
Likewise the mastering process. There's a real art to it and I'm pretty early in the learning curve.
comments like yours are helpful in getting closer to a good result, for sure.

I'm a Son Volt fan. Saw them live once... fantastic show.
I've heard Fred Eaglesmith a time or two... I believe he plays in my town not infrequently, I'll have to check out a show one of these days.

Needs a little polishing Alec
but not because you did anything wrong, because it's a wonderful song that needs to be giving the very best to make it shine.

Love the acoustic in the left ear and the other rhythm guitar in the right. Very nice field placement my friend. Slightly subdued lead in the break works well too.

And although you vocal it very well done, for the deaf people in the crowd I would have liked the vox up a notch or two, but then I am deaf after all.

Great song my friend.

vocal volume
thanks for listening Ed!
As I mentioned in a previous reply, it's hard for me to know how to do the vocal levels.
A previous listener suggested I should turn the vocals down! :)
If anyone has any tricks of the trade on how to determine best volume for vocals, I'd be really interested.
It might be a good forum question now that I think of it.
The only thing I go by at present, is a tip I heard that the listener shouldn't have to strain to make out the lyrics.
Anyway, I very much appreciate the listen and comment!

chill
I was planning a pilgrimage of sorts from Phoenix, AZ to Lubbock, TX a few years ago. I was going to drive and it would have been like 15 hours, I think. I had the tunes all mapped out, but never ending up doing it. This sounds like a lot of what I had for that trip. A rock and roll road trip. Makes me wish I made that trip. Smooth vocals, killer perfect guitar chops. Great tune!

I've compared you to Matthew Sweet before and this is no exception. Shades of the Velvet Crush and The Thorns too (Matthew's side project). Beautifully executed vocal arrangements and wonderful songwriting.

you know... I try not to compare
but the VIBE of this reminds me of the Dead, and while I'm not cool enough to have been a dead head I am cool enough to have gone to one concert and picked up on the vibe, and it was truly magical.... aw... now I'm sad. But this totally captures that for me! So thank you! I'll be downloading this special piece!

3 Year Old New Strings!
Great guitar sounds strumming along on this one. I like where they sit in the mix and totally love your shredding lead. Your vocals are always so friendly and genuine, meaning, they don't sound pretentious at all. You sound like a dude that can just pick up his guitar and start singing away, making every head turn and say, "Hey, shut up! This dude is singing!"

You rock man. Really. This is one of your better productions, top to bottom.

Keep it up!

Actually
This is friggin brilliant. And I Love the way it is produced. Simple, honest and human. Nothing like the over produced auto tuned crud that is put out now days. (although that last chord does sound processed) Writing ,melodic integrety, feeling and a story.....You are on a roll....really fine tunes you've been putting out. Regards

float
this is not ragged at all -
this thing just floats -
it seems to be a lifestyle all within itself -
the echoing flow-though voice is nice -
precious - ties you to this life-changing event back when - in the back seat of the pontiac bonneville 400 - the car was like a personal love-boat. Lucky Man.
