Description
This is an odd song that I wrote and recorded back in 2005. I had it posted here way back when but took it down, and re-worked it recently. What I did was replaced the Drums on Demand drum loops with EZ Drummer Jazz Kit drums with a whole different feel. It's in 9/8 according to the song file, but there are all sorts of dropped beats and half measures and stuff like that so it's a bit oddly timed and was fun to come up with new drums for. The guitar and vocals and bass are the original recordings, as is the weird breakdown in the solo section, which is a drunken sounding wooziness that is made up of my then 7 year old son Maurice and I jamming on a clarinet and dented trumpet that we got out of the trash, and then I recorded some banjo and electric piano in there that sort of plays along. Obviously, the banjo and the electric piano were the only things that we knew how to play... We weren't drunk but it sounds it due to all the squeaking and squawking. And we did that twice and I just sort of threw it all in there in a tossed salad. The original recording was done in GB, and the remix was done in Logic Pro.
Lyrically I was going for Mose Allison or Tom Waits territory, and I think I landed in the general area. There's a third verse that I left off for some reason but maybe it was just going on too long.

This song sort of cracks me up and I really did need to clean up some things, and I'm way happier with the drums. Oh, and in the solo section I added in a bit of EZ Drummer Trash Kit that has that whoopee whistle you'll at the end if you listen to the whole thing.

Lyrics
Your mind has a mind of it’s own
It sits like a king on the throne
If anger can be power
It’s also wasted lots of hours
But it’s important to throw the dog a bone

If the past could stay in the past
And the rules weren’t so hard and fast
So we lived in the present tense
It would make a lot more sense
If the past would stay in the past

Why? Why? Why?
You might find, find, find
If you try, try, try
You can change the channel
Anytime

What’s lost tends to stay lost
It won’t come back no matter what the cost
Be it something you posses
Or your innocence
What’s lost tends to stay lost

Why? Why? Why?
You might find, find, find
If you try, try, try
You can change the channel
Anytime

Your mind has a mind of its own
And plenty for which you must atone
If you tone down the craze
You may find a way out of the haze
But your mind has a mind of it’s own

in a modern kind of way - like the unison vocalizing. Thats how I play clarinet too. don't even ask me about trumpet..... Odd is a good descriptor yet highly creative.

Musical
This is very cool; really enjoyed it. The "non-musical" sounds – squeaks, etc. – are actually very musical, and perfect for this track. The whole thing is very creative, and congrats to you for that.

Delicious Dissonance
...done so masterfully. All the "squeaking and squawking" sounds like a sad birthday party, meaning beautifully dark, like an art film.

The way you sing the refrain is really moving.

Thanks!
I thought you might appreciate the poetry in the lyrics, as I thought it was sort of clever. But then again, that's probably just my own mind's particular haze clouding my judgement. :D

Yeah I really like this
Though experimental and all it's still very listenable, actually soothing. The whoopie at the end is funny.

"what is lost tends to stay lost"

My dad died when I was 13 and it has always been something that shaped me. I can't deny it or I should deny myself, so I will share what thoughts that evoked. Music and art are good for that.

This morning as I woke up I was dreaming about going back to a house that belonged to my best friend when I was a kid. See, in real life, I recently connected with him and he told me his parents had moved back to our hometown and bought the house he grew up in (and I by extension kind of grew up in also). It was nostalgic and emotional as I dreamed about talking with his family, remembering the house and the memories.

When I awoke I was basically crying in bed, weird but it was really vivid. My wife awoke about the same time and I started talking to her about it. I said the thing that was just so weird about it was I had kind of given up the house as lost, like I could never go back. When they sold it and moved and other people lived there all the memories were buried under the weight of the past. Then I found out they bought it back! My first questions to my friend were if any of the things that were ours were still there! Funny it is like 30 years later almost and yet I wonder about our "huts" and everything.

So... something lost, which I could never go back to. And then it came back! So again I told my wife the really weird thing about the dream is that I have dreamed a few times that my dad came back like that. Like he wasn't really dead he just had to go or something, and then he just came back. The impossible happened! Those dreams are always really hard to wake up from. And so was this one because I think subconsciously I was comparing the experiences and one was real and one could never be.

So, thanks for this song. The dreamy nature of it and the lyrics and such really struck me. I am sure you never thought of it the way I just described but that is the power and beauty of art.

lost stuff...
Yeah, I didn't really think of it like that, it more like things like socks in the laundry or your keys or something...
The words sort of came together quickly and so I didn't think of them much until much later.
Thanks for the visit and the comment!

I was here a lot and now I'm not. I decided that being active on MacJams was an enormous distraction for me and wasn't something conducive to my musical life. It's a site that can absorb a lot of time! This is obviously just a personal decision for m... [see more]
