Mix Experiment

Description
this was an experiment in using samples and creating my own loops. most of the stuff came from freesound and sampleswap, but there are also moments where I am playing too. I am really astonished by what people are able to do with this medium, and don't have much experience with it myself. this is a little blues/hip hop/jazz/psych noise for you. feel free to play with it.

tech question for you: why does this sound fine (for the most part) on phones and monitors, but when I listen back through the macbook speakers, there is too much reverb? my guess is that the speakers have a limited frequency range and the reverb lies exclusively in that range. trying to figure out how to make things sound decent on a wider variety of speakers.

i took a listen
thru monitors, headfones and macbook speakers

in order of the best sound, i would say that headfones was 1, monitors was 2 and macbook speakers last

now, in regards to your question about too much reverb - there may be some subjectivity creeping in about what is too much, what is just right etc

i think you are right that the macbook speakers seem to be emphasising certain frequencies that the monitors/fones dont, but if you hadnt specifically said 'too much reverb' in your question, im not sure i would have picked up on that

the question is - do you want it to sound good via all 3 listening medium?

when i used to record in fancy studios many yrs go, there was always the massive monitors, some nearfields and in one or two places i went, a tiny mono speaker which was supposed to emulate a transistor radio....the engineers always seemed to go for the best sound on the speakers that gave the most detail - ie the massive speakers or nearfields. playing it thru the tiny mono speaker was only done to establish if there were problems with the mix that were not apparent in the bigger speakers (such as stereo phasing)
it would be an interesting exercise to do 3 separate mixes - monitor/phones/macbook speakers to see how different they all turned out
however i think it would be a challenge to get one perfect mix for all 3 listening modes - if you achieve it, please let me know

:-)

Yes!
This is great.
a little bit DJ Shadow-ish in parts.
Except without the loud drum beats...
I'm actually tempted to play in this sonic sandbox...

dude
DJ Shadow is amazing, I wish it was that good. He did cross my mind as I was doing this. there is a documentary called Scratch that has a bit on him, highly recommended. Thanks for the listen, and feel free to do what you like with this.

I could listien to this...
...all the time. Sampling and mixing is a medium I'd like to get into too. I'd say this was a pretty darn good experiment.

hey dude i really like the direction - i'm a big fan of thievery corporation and this reminds me of that stuff. not much into the middle eastern sounds that lead off (personal taste thing) but when you hit the motown/blues/blaxploitation sounds i'm hooked. this is great subway music, keep it coming...

Very cool
I'm fascinated by this medium also. Really like what you have done here. You certainly found some great samples. I think have several songs in one here. All the different sections of this track could be expanded into a full song. Enjoyed.

Experimental music is any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is. There is an overlap with avant-garde music. John Cage was a pioneer in experimental music and defined and gave credibility to the form. As with other edge
