Locust Storm

Description
Maybe I should have titled this "Over The Edge."
I have been listening to the amazing soundscapes of Paul Reinholt for several years now, and take my inspiration for this soundtrack score from his wonderfully inventive extraterrestrial creations. This one, however, is a vision of a locust storm/swarm...but perhaps it easily fits into a scene from the "Dune" series, too. It is a departure for me, though probably not a trend. I'm curious what you think of it. (Don't judge me too harshly, Ed. And Gail: while the scene is ugly, I am hoping you won't think the visual/audio effect is.
Peace to all.

Well
It is not the gorgeous Pageon piano I normally expect but it does simply and effectively put "the swarm" feeling into my mind.... Now I'm all itchy and twitchy as I hate bugs of all kinds... locusts gross me out!!!

Excellent work... I need to go take a shower I think and get that clean (no locust) feeling! :)

Paul I do believe sincerely that there is no genre that you could not dominate in one try. This is stunning and very effective! (swipes a locust off the shoulder and streaks for the shower!)

Eery intro . . .
Phweeh, what a ride. What soundscape.
Over the edge. Indeed.
Some hedge. My.

Very effective, Paul.
Finely crafted.
Powerful.
Thanks !

It was so very quiet at first
that I wasn't sure it was playing. I could definitely see this backing up a scene where men are arriving in a desert with some reprehensible mission in order.
I guess I'm seeing military driving into a less than welcoming place. Thanks.

Strangely
very listenable and eerie in a nice way and relaxing too..... it really does have an extra terrestrial feel for me though, as though I was entering every room in my house tentatively waiting for something to jump out of the shadows or from behind the shower curtain or something. Beautifully atmospheric, regards M

Hi Paul......
A change is as good thing in anyone's life.

This is not such a different change. The strings are there so there are classical elements, then there are the evocative sounds. The locusts, swirling wing, tension, apprehension, all arranged into the soundscape very well and everythings fits with your description and ideas.

Thanks for the mention. If I inspired you in any way it has made my day.

I just bought the Dune book once again, so am reading about Arrakis and Paul after 35 years. It's about time!! Hope your wife enjoys the books herself.

Take care.

Paul

This is fabulous ...there s no boundary for art and creativity ...
and you proved that even the orchestra can give sound of nature with
ambient and deep wall of sound for a virtual scene ...very nice
and thank you for the thrill scene ...!!!!

It was if
My ears popped and I heard a ringing then I realized you put it in the background.. So much suspense those loud crackling sunds do givean Image of a thousand bugs off in the horizon and up close! I dont catch all your songs, but I think this is different for you. I think it worked out on every level. I like the silence then the comeback at the end, my favorite part

um ugly? no....scary?
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This gave me the chills so bad. I cannot handle bugs, locusts, worms, flies, I do not care what it is....if it moves...I'm outta there and screaming!!! This gave me the jitters and all I could think about was running away. So eerie....My heart is beating fast as my imagination dooms me! You are truly so creative and good at anything you do Paul. Good job once again.

Okay folks and now back to our regularly scheduled program...... please! :)

This sound would work well in the original Alien movie also. Eerie stuff. Good to hear you branching out.

Dune...
...desert planet. Never a drop of water on Arrakis.

This music would fit in well with the film's excellent soundtrack. I am obsessively addicted to Lynch's interpretation of Dune, btw, though it is far from perfect! I too must re-read the books sometime soon.

Great work.

the sign of a good ambient tune
i kept looking at the player to make sure i had pushed the play button, and then without my even being aware of it, there was sound there. exquisite use of the strings. compositions like this take so much control and restraint, while also trying to create a free, unstructured sound. you've done a perfect job. incredible use of fading. this is quite an accomplishment Paul, definitely a departure to be proud of.

Heart of Darkness - quite a change
and a truly wonderful surprise. I'd like to encourage you to bring your formidable talents and well trained ear for composition to this type of music more often. The plucked strings are wonderful and the whole atmosphere is extremely rich and evocative. Great work Paul.

Wow, Paul
The slow build sets the stage for the ominous intensity of this creative piece. I think they are alien locusts. I don't know how you made this, but it was very effective. I'll flinch next time I see a grasshopper.

Definitely film music...
Of course while this would work much better with picture, the fact I kept listening, and didn't stop, says something. :) This creates an atmosphere very well. I couldn't have the patience to do this. Great job!

Absolutely!
Paul, it achieves the desired effect. I kept looking around to make sure the buggers weren't crawling up my pants leg. Very creepy and eerie too.
Nice job,
Stephen

The build of suspense is masterful
Such simple elements convey so very much here. The high strings make it almost unbearable to know what is coming next. As you get into the pizz strings and the low rolling pads it is quite claustrophobic. And just when it seems to be all clear at the 3:00 mark back they come again. The longer denouement is unexpected and most effective as it gives the listener time to recall the horror of the swarm as it moves to devastate more distant places.

In a word: Eeeeeeeeeewwwwwww!

Most evocative. And I could hear the hommage to Paul's ambient work and I certainly agree with his being an inspiring composer as well.

Cheers,
Doug
