Cowboy Song (Part 1)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is actually part 1 of a trilogy. Cowboy Song, Outlaw, I'm an Outlaw. They each speak of the same cowboy story. I'll post the other two parts over time. I am a huge fan of Westerns. Instilled in me by my grandfather who was also a great fan of cowboys and horses. He use to own several horses and show them. He won several awards. This song was inspired by all the cowboy movies I have ever watched. Hope you like it.

Lyrics
Cowboy Song

(spoken)
You stole my land and you killed my wife
Now it's time to pay with your life
End of the road sheriff

There were two shots heard in the night
Sounding just like thunder in the rain
Another man falls to a cowboy's pain
And it's always the same

This is just a cowboy song
Sung by the fire when the night is long
This is just a cowboy song
Sung to forget all about the things that's gone wrong
The things that's gone wrong

He always knew he'd have to out run the gun
To seek revenge for the death of his wife
He always knew that it would end like this

Chorus
Just like in an old time cowboy song (repeat)

He never thought in his life this would happen at all
He never thought in his life they'd call him an outlaw

Chorus
Just like in an a old time cowboy song (Repeat)
(This is just a cowboy song)
Sung by the fire when the night is long
(This is just a cowboy song)
Sung to forget about the things that's gone wrong
(This is just a cowboy song)
About a man and his wife who the sheriff had wronged,
The sheriff had wronged

Just like in a old time cowboy song (Repeat)

He always knew he have to run (Repeat)

(this is just a cowboy song) (Repeat)

Love this
really nice modern Johnny Cash type thing. I'm actually a big fan of the old western style of music (the story type songs). My favorite is probably "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. A bit overplayed maybe but I liked this song since I was a boy and still do. I plan to be back for the rest of the trilogy! Good work.

You always have a great story line to your music.
I never thought that writing a song about a cowboys hard luck could sound so good. Your truly a master lyricist.
Very ORIGINAL . . .

The music
captures the old west setting well. Your vox are back in the mix more than usual but still fantastic. This is a cool track friend. Great recording.

Cool
The music is a good fit to the lyric. The vocals, deep pitched and dramatic were a good fit as well. On my speakers, I lost the spoken intro - I thought the rain sound effect was up a little high.

Very cool Cash like tune
Great tune. I would clean up the timing on the guitar in the chorus a bit. Either the delay or the timing is off slightly. D/Led it and fav'd. If you update it, let me know. Thx

Cowboy Song
This really has a zeitgeist feel to it. Excellent production and love the changes and that acoustic blasting thru the whole song. The way you handle this sounds like this really happened to someone... and probably did.

Anthony,
Pretty neat signature groove here. The problem I have is with the story line. Why did the sheriff do the cowboy wrong? What were the events leading up to the wrong? You say "it's always the same," but in old film Westerns the sheriff isn't often the bad guy. The sheriff may be ineffective, creating an opportunity for hero-cowboy to clean up the town of bad guys. In your song, you turn the story line on it head, which is OK. But I need to know why cowboy had to shoot the sheriff rather than press charges. Did he also shoot the deputy?

I like some of your chord changes but I expected more in the chorus, like you did in part two. Nice weaving of lines (call and response) in the last part of song.

An enjoyable listen.

The Story Line
Yes I understand in MOST cowboy movies the sheriff is the good guy. When you hear part three you'll get the picture better, I hope. Part 1 is a bit of back ground as to why he is an outlaw and part 2 is kind of an outsider talking about the outlaw and in part 3 he accepts that he will be considered an outlaw the rest of his life for killing the sheriff. No he didn't kill the deputy :-) The story is about a land grabbing sheriff who stole his land and killed his wife. So he seeks revenge instead of justice. This is explained in part 3. It's kind of an early western story when the west was just beginning to be populated and there were a lot of crooked sheriffs.
I hope that clears some it up for you. I wrote these several years ago and no longer have the files. I would have to completely redo them. I just let them go. Not a big call for western songs today. I did it as a tribute to my grandfather after he passed away He loved westerns and instilled that feeling in me, as well. I guess it is what it is at this point. I'm happy that you are still able to enjoy them. Thanks for listening and watch for part 3 in about a week. I love your comments too they are very insightful. Thanks again.

Excellent
Kind of a Bowie sound to the vocals, ads to the "noir" feel of it. Very visual. Thanks,
