Lyrics
Distant Shores

There may be trouble on the distant shores,
But if we can lets live for today
Life is a bird of freedom caught in a trap
Let it go now we can lead the way
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One boy workin in a pizza place got fired yesterday
Lost his daddy 5 years ago and 5 thousand left to pay
One girl said it was a waste of time always trying to save the world
A man on the corner selling his soul got teeth made of gold

Now if the waters keep rising and we dont change a thing
We may aswell kiss our children goodbye
But if there is hope in the valley and a smile in your step
Then theres a chance that we can survive

How many times - do we watch the news and still walk away to die
Its so easy to forget another kind of debt when were not certain of the reasons why -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There may be trouble on the distant shores,
But if we can lets live for today
Life is a bird of freedom caught in a trap
Let it go now we can lead the way
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Big man playin on the pitch today - heart leapt out of control
His lady watchin on the tv screen never could have been told
A woman in nylons crossed the street to buy some magazine
Run down outright by the law her face was never seen

Now if the ice keeps melting and we dont change our ways
We might aswell just throw these savings away
But if there's love in your body and theres music in your soul
It may be we will live to see the day

When we will walk - talk with no fear - into the light of dawn
Its so easy to be forget those people we have met and
Even those who are yet to be born

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There may be trouble on the distant shores,
But if we can lets live for today
Life is a bird of freedom caught in a trap
Let it go now we can lead the way
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stretchy Imaginary Canvas
Well done, tasty music production especially on keys. Reminds me of a couple things I used to play in early 90s, a good song!
I love the title and was looking for a tie into that, but was disappointed. Subject matter for lyrics is always confusing to me, the vocals though are top notch. Thanks for posting.

fair comment - Its 3.49am here and I dont know why I called it that.Only that I was thinking bout the guy I met from that band.At any rate - its an era that was before my time, and I know 'elastic oz' meant alot to alot of people...so if it raises thoughts, and nostalgia then I hope thats a good thing, and that I havent offended that movement - regards rg

ps - I was going to call it 'the Jackson Sound' originally lol,but got distracted - I just knew 'distant shores' wasnt going to be a good title,as I cant play the clarinet - tho i did av lessons at school.thanks Daug - Richovich

Ozzie Stretches
Now that clarinet thing, you can gig behind that, that's close to claret too. A little red wine makes a flexible Oz, most certainly so...
Sorry, I don't know any movement from the wind blowing the grass. The lyrics just didn't seem all stretchy and Ozzie like Lol.

cider.Well scrub all I said - I changed it to distant shores, lol! To clarify anyhow, elastic oz was a band john lennon put together to defend a magazine during the 60's that caused uproar cos it showed nude people smoking pot - rg

Great song Richard
Love the musical feel of this, and you've got some really prime lyrics for it. Great job on the vocal man you nailed it on this one.

LOve the melody, vocal and production. All top notch. Reminds me of Squeeze, an 80's fave. High compliment. Ear candy, in my book. Well done!

Rich,
Happy (sad?) boppy tune. The production is top notch, really! The lyrics and bass are smooth as silk. Fantastic. YOu are becoming quite the mix master these days. Now get some sleep!

i know wot you mean - the lyrics are pretty downwards facing upwards, phil. Thanks - i think the production was easier on this cos i didnt bother recording any guitar, and kept the mic at exactly same distance for each vocal track.Am a creature of the night unfortunately - rich

Hi Richard
Great stuff as usual. Where did you record this - it sounds great - like some pro-studio.
I like how you put a low vocal line in quite a few of your songs (like William "Bill" Greene bass vocals on George Harrison's Gone Troppo album). While I'm here, your face book site has an acoustic guitar song called Heaven - are you going to upload that here some time?
Cheers

fine young jack johnson
i agree with everyone else here, mix is outstanding. also love the production decisions - spoken double track on the verse, "ahh" backups, la la la's, etc. - obviously a lot of care and thought went into this. Organ is standout too, really roars to life here and there, very cool. sounds like a fine young cannibals/jack johnson mashup. only crit is where's the guitar? i kept listening for a funky acoustic rhythm track or some old memphis strat...

What a great
song - I love it when lyrics are all doom and gloom and the music is fun and happy. This is foot tapping, head nodding bliss. I will listen to and enjoy this while driving with the window down, great sing along tune. Thanks for the download.
Cheers

This is great dude. Thoughtful lyrics but an up lifting melody. Such is life. Dynamite production and sweet key boards. Really, really dig this. Regards

It has the Paddler touch!
Nice one, Rich. You've done it again. Love the lyrics and the very unusual musical approach, even though you've made it feel familiar. SMOKIN' organ solo, by the way.

A little church up in here
Great melody sung with jus the right passion. One of those singing the end of the world blues, but makes you want to dance... which kind of goes along with the message of lyric. Very VERY good.

Awesome Surprise!
This is different, I think anyway... Has an Gospel tone to it, McCartney'ish melody... A very happy song filled with sunshine. I love everything about it! From the production, to the performance (excellent!), the hammond solo (wow!), the bass steady in the back, the vocals are super, super!

I really like...
...your vocals on this, and the sort of piano riff that makes up the main part. I thought I didn't like it when I first heard it, and then the darned thing wouldn't leave my head... The organ break is pretty darned cool, too... And the combination of the lead vocals with the spaced background vocals really works...

Well written lyrics. However, the vocal work is simply OUTSTANDING.

Keeps on going
Now this is a Song! A lot going on. Some sounds you use sound a bit cheap to me but your songwriting qualities shine through. What if you recorded this with some real horns?

Oh and about the Soul label, there's quite some Spiritual feeling close under the surface as well.

Thanks for sharing!
