Black Ice

Description
2 1/2 years ago i posted a version of this song. Early this week I originally intended to do a quick remix of it for my files. But, after I listened to it, after all this time, I realized I needed to recut some stuff. Like A LOT! All that remains are the effected guitar tracks (3). Everything else was a total do-over. I have deleted the original to save yourself the agony.

Well, that's one down.

Lyrics
Black Ice

some damaged goods
my damaged brain
really don't care
can't remember a thing
call it amnesia
its all the same
never could remember
all the little things

chorus:
slipped my mind on black ice
better tell me twice
slipped my mind on black ice
open as the skys

just plug me in
some damn machine
spark my memory
please don't flatter me
have little post its
all over the place
digital calendars
remind if i'm late

chorus:
slipped my mind on black ice
better tell me twice
slipped my mind on black ice
open as the skys

call it multi task
doesn't prove a thing
for all i know
i do the same things
i don't remember
how this song goes
just like my dreams
i forget it all

slipped my mind on black ice

Whoa....
now that is a beginning to a song! Love that line... slipped my mind on black ice! That is so visual and visceral. Some cool middle guitar work. Vic, you're something. A true heavy lifter of guitar riffing. I get lost... draws me in.... I'm loosing my mind... drifting.. dreams... music.... another scotch... oops!

good one Vic.

as best i remember, the line came to me when i was out shoveling snow 2 1/2 years ago, I slipped on black ice, and hoped that non of the neighbors saw it. I'm sure they had a good laugh if they did. everything else is a bit hazy from that point on.

I know what you mean with a quick remix, I have try that myself BUT sometimes it ends up with just a mess, I'm happy you succeeded, as always I love what you do, so thanks for one other song to my, Vic, library.

Hey Kenta
I hadn't listened to the older version in a couple years. I thought it would be a easy re-mix. But, after starting on it i ended up redoing most of the tracks, A lot more work then I had intended, that's usually the case

This has a decidedly Beatles feel an sound to it Vic
Works for me. cause I love the Beatles music. Interesting metaphors in the lyrics, and a great delivery on them in the vox. Love the lead guitar parts in the break, and for that matter all of it.

Great song Vic,

Well, too late...
'cause I've got the original....

It's very cool to compare them, actually. The big thing that stands out is that this is a much more three dimensional mix, much more spacious. The other version sounds flatter, less airy and dynamic... Every element of this one has air in and around it...

And in the original graphic, the cowboy's neckerchief was cotton instead of silk. So what do I win?

Ed
Vic Holman said 2948 days ago (July 25th, 2009)
Thanks Ed
sometimes songs are quite the way you remember them. I hadn't listened to the other one for a very long time. I realized that it was almost a total do-over. A big thing totally eliminating several guitar tracks. And taming the bass to a more simpler pattern. Of course I have learned more about mixing during the time.

You win a shiny new mp3 of this song and the right to say "i told you so". I would of given the cotton scarf, unfortunately the scarf shrunk in the wash.

You may remember that I LOVED the original...
But this really a superior version. You've come a long way since then.

The beginning sounds a little like the Pogues "Turkish Song Of The Damned" just before you break into the vocal. Verrrrry cool.

Still dig that awesome chorus. And that instrumental mid-section is HUGE now bro!

Sometimes it pays big-time to revisit them oldies. This is one of those times!

Be well friend!

Hi Mike
we both have learned quite a bit since then. I picked this one to redo at random. I remember it as a decent tune. I didn't realize I was going to practically redo almost all of it. I sure wish i knew then, what i know now. I'll probably say that again in a few years.:-)

Lennon714 said 2948 days ago (July 26th, 2009)
What
in the world is that screechy guitar thing? It sounds like you're using a pedal that produces thirds or fifths and then raising it an octave? It's wild and I love it. The chorus zigs when I think it's going to zag, which is fun. I am kind of disappointed I can compare it to the original, though.
Check out my latest song called The Robots of Coconino County
Vic Holman said 2948 days ago (July 26th, 2009)
screechy good
that's a whammy pedal that makes that sound. it's built in to my digitech gnx2 effect pedal board. If you leave it toe up it makes a chatter noise, that is used on the chords in the verse and the tremolo picking on the chorus. the solo is using a pitch shifter with an interval. crazy huh?

Thanks Eric

Lennon714 said 2948 days ago (July 26th, 2009)
ah!
That's what it is! I used to have the Digitech RP200 and it had the same whammy effect. I think I'm actually screwing around with it on a song I have posted here "When you get carried away". Though your use of it is cooler and more of a controlled madness. Love the touch, Vic!

on redoing this older song the drums was giving me the most problems. Since they are pretty aggressive. It was a combination of playing the keyboard penciling in notes and moving some around. I think I spent 3 evenings constantly messing with it.

outrageous!
that little arpeggio with the _____ (insert word here) effect in the verse is killer. also like how much space you've got in the verse, no idea how you get some many effects to cut down to silence so quickly without cutting them off - great mixing dude. and that outrageous 70's metal break and solo is just well, outrageous.

word
whammy pedal, it was set for an octave up, you just glide it up with the pedal. when it's all the way up it also produces that chatter kind of sound, weird huh? It also helps to have a noise silencer on as well, that you can adjust the threshold.

I can play metal but my voice isn't attuned to it, that's why I haven't done a full out version... and i have no tat's

Yes, this is certainly improved - the sound (even through my crappy work speakers) is far less murky - the whole production more polished. However, I do think it's a shame that the earlier recording has been deleted.

This recalls a lot of pop music in a reassuring way. The production effort supports the lyrics. I find the synth work especially fine, the focus is to compliment the song, these synth lines really hit the mark.

Synth effect
I had to listen again, the "effects" are working. I wanted to point out how effective the arrangement is and that feature really stands out. There was a mixmaster in Cabin studios that had a great magnetic effect on a telecaster. That "effect" is on a lot of records too. Lol

Good song
That one guitar, the one with a synthy edge to it, it's cool when it plays a solo, or when it's the only rhythm, but in a number of places I find it a tad annoying like in the passage right after the minute mark. I'd say that sound is too individualistic to use for straight rhythm.

Otherwise good stuff as always. Your drum mix is very nice.

Yeah, except in my case I can't remember the patch # or which buttons to push or sometimes where to plug it in! But it is easier than chaining different boxes together. I can't tell you how many times I have spent 3 hours tweaking 4 boxes with patch cables, turning knobs, changing patch orders, splitting and recombining signals, and finally getting a sound I wanted -- which I could NEVER get again! It's a one time thing for me and my organizationally challenged brain! If I was only half-stupid I would at least take a picture of the mess!!

Ah Ha! This is where I came in.... this was the first song of yours I chose to listen to just because I liked the title and the friendly aviator avatar..... still love the unique image inferred - "slipped my mind on black ice" : ) And although I thought the first incarnation terrific (it's still on my iPod) I must agree that you've improved upon the original - especially, your vocals now are stronger and more self assured, and the music reflects confidence as well. Kudos Vicar!!! I'm enjoying this new version on the iPod also. : )

Beautifully mixed!
The guitar that enters at 12:12 is candy-like. I love listening to that. Maybe the vocals weren't quite loud enough...? Maybe it's just my preference. Flavorful rock all-around. You obviously made vast improvements from the original mix.

Hmmm... The lyrics disturb me. They're artful and raw. I mean, they're funny, and they're kinda supposed to be, right...? Still, a feeling of bitterness exudes from them. Maybe because they're also raw, I taste the reality of a human mind that really cannot remember much of anything... and spites itself for that? Disturbing. Deeper than I've dared to look.

Not sure why I'm getting this dark, menacing vibe, but it's here. Actually, I feel that your odd choice of chords contributed to the feeling of "wrongness." I shall favorite this song because of how much it has influenced my psyche. Cool stuff.

the title came about on slipping on some black ice when i was shoveling snow and took a dive and wasn't paying attention.
