Summer 09

Description
First upload since November 2008 - when I said I would drown in Logic, which apparantly I did in some way or another. Not from difficulty of use but of the endless possibilities.

To get going with music making again I have to thank davajonah for his beautiful song "From the Centre" which was made with help from Tune Toys, a free web software you can find - and have a lot of fun with - on nosuch.com/tjt/tunetoys.html

The last two years I have had similar creativity problems in early summer and then it helped to put together a short loop song about the summer at hand. I don't know if this song is very "summery", but the word used in Tune Toys to generate the midi files to work with is Summer Night Sky in Swedish. It's not the music's fault I happened to chose instruments that did not fit the theme very well... At least I have started to make music again!

Don't forget to listen to davajonah
Also reinholt56 had a go at Tune Toys, as did ic42. Check them out!

Thank you Feter!
Fast as usual and always with such a kind comment. Much appreciated!

BTW, I have listened to your latest blues songs, alas without commenting. Although the genre is not quite my cup of coffee, it seems to fit your talent very well!

Got a hankering for more Henke
and here it is... how fun... love your choices of synths here, they really smooth out the strange jumping around that algorithmically generated music often creates. I remember finding Tunetoys long ago, but have only done a few things with it. Great stuff. Not particularly "Summery", but it has sort of a fanfare/pageant feel due to all the octave jumps.

Drakonis

Hehe, thanks!
Well, I am surprised it turned out this good, but then davajonah's song set an awsome standard for this "genre". The solo synth is called "Sonic lead HD". If I remember correctly I made that myself in GB for an earlier song. The (simple) bass line is Modern Prophecy, the eerie background noise is Cybernetic Bulkhead, the (likewise simple) percussion is a few variations of an Analog Drum Machine, somthing I have thought of using for some time. For voice I had to call in my Jacaranda singers. I liked those, may use them again pretty soon, with something more singable than this... And that's all. Except for some tweaking and very little pencil editing and copy and paste. Quite fun to do anyway. Let's see if I can do a song of "my own" now ;-)

Thanks again for listening and commenting! Take care.

Thanks Mo!
Glad you found summer in this song, even if the sounds are a little "harsher" than I would have liked (for the theme). Take care!

Brilliant!
I love the change that brings in the voices and the bass beat is excellent. Really good!

Glad you're back making tunes again. :-)

Thanks to you and Tune Toys
Does the voices come in too late? I figured maybe they should be brought in directly after the break but couldn't get that to work. One funny thing I forgot to mention above was the song tempo: 52 bpm! And still those synth fingers are playing pretty fast ;-)

This was fun, and easier to get into again after all this while than I thought it might be. Hope to get another song going soon. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Thanks Kenta!
Glad you found a bit of Swedish summer in this! It is a bit too busy to represent my own rather lazy staycation, but it was fun doing. And as you often point out, that's what it is all about... You take care too!

it is a surprise
it is always good to hear a new music from you. however, it is a great surprise to hear a tunetoy, and for you to mention me. thank you for such a gift.

this begins in the darkness of morning. it is an unknown day. will it be joyful or dangerous. soon some coffee clears shadows, and sunshine clears the future. it is a good day. a day to march through the grass. to talk to trees. then to relax. however, at the very end, the music darkens. evening begins to return.

it is well done. thank you for sharing a day with us. 0x0

You are too kind!
I thank you very much for the beautiful picture in words you have painted here. I can see it in the music too. At the end I thought of autumn/fall, but evening is very apt too! After all, the word I used in Tune Toys was Summer Night Sky (in Swedish). Thank you also for helping me with inspiration to make a song like this. Take care.

summery
This has a nice warm energy that is very evocative of summer. I love that bass drum line that slowly appears. This is a great jump back into music making and it's nice to hear something new from you. Nice gradual additions of different elements to keep the song going. I'm going to have to check out this tunetoys thing!

Thank you Shay!
I am glad you found summer in this little piece. Thanks also for being so supportive. This has been a day in the garden so no new music on its way yet, but any rainy day now... I am not sure you would need Tune Toy yourself for actual music making, but it can sure be fun passtime just listening to what the built-in midi makes of various words. Also there are several different toys of which I have only tested the first one so far.

BTW, for the family vacation I compiled a CD for the car with just piano pieces by Gail, Karen and yourself. That was really nice to drive to, so thanks for that too!

Take care!

Hello Henke
Glad you found a way to break the creative deadlock. I'm all for an unconventional view of summer ... so the darker elements in the instrument sounds work for me.

Love the random generation. I may have to try tunetoys myself. Reminds me of early synth experimentation, even Pete Townsend had a go in those days. Love it, especially the vocal. Oh, and by the way if you do want to visit Whitby you can get a ferry to Hull and it is not far.

Hi
Glad you liked this and especially the vocals. They were a last minute inspiration when I had already sent it to iTunes once, but thought maybe something more was wanted for extra interest.

If only our and maybe world economy permits we actually may go to England next summer. Our 8 year old daughter goes to a school where they talk both Swedish and English, and it would be nice for her to get some extra training. Also we have something of a crush for that part of the world anyways... Heard of Intervac house exchange? That is probably what we'll try, so depends where we can get an exchange if we'll get to Whitby, but I sure wouldn't mind.

Take care.

A very kind and genrous comment! I'm just trying to get the demo version of Kore Player running. Being on the fifth week of summer vacation has gone to the head so I didn't realise how to get a password for the "Service Center". Not even Adobe is this crazy with "paper work" before you can try a thing out. I think I have just got it right though, and hopefully can start testing in a few minutes.

Take care.

A joyous noise
OK, now that the ice is broken ... well, you know. I think the voice section was great, and I see in your comments that you might do something else with them. Looking forward to that. Lots of interesting chord changes, which either make -- or fight against -- the happy feeling you've conveyed. The lead synth runs are really nice. That chord change at 1:50 (!). The effects on the voices are just great. That's such a nice section of music. Good to have you back. Stick around, won't you?

Haha,
Well, you should have heard me at the dinner party yesterday. Only talking about MacJammer this or that or the new song I had posted... You won't be rid of me that easily ;-) Posting new songs is another matter, but I am actually working on something promising, with a couple of sounds from the demo version of Kore Player of Native Instruments. Nice voices, you say? Hm, maybe I could persuade them to join my new piece as well?!

(About fighting against the happy feeling: At least I try to get some "worrying" tendencies into my pieces as to not make them pure heaven, which, strangely enough, usually gives a somewhat boring experience, don't you think...?)

Thanks for listening and a great comment. See you around!!

Glad you liked this. Of course you do not need to do a whole song out of the Tune Toy midi, but I guess in one of your songs they can make up an interesting background, apiece of inspiration to work around.
