Worried Man (2008)

Description
This is another old traditional song, and I'd recorded this way back when I first got GarageBand, on a lark, and it was full of loops and looping behaviors. Just now I opened the old Garageband file in Logic, and a lot of the loops were missing, so I had to sort of re-do it. The electric piano and guitars and harmony vocals and banjo are from the original GB version, the drums and bass and lead vocal are new. This is one long song! I thought it would be fun to sing this song in a sort of laconic manner, belying the lyrical worry that the song sings about. and I liked singing little-bitty!
I got inspired by kassia to try to simulate a hang drum by using Tibetan Bells and Marimba combined to get that sort of percussive melodic thing in the background throughout.

Took me a couple verses to get into it, but I did. A little more banjo would please. Fun stuff.

Different
But quite interesting... The long intro almost made me wonder if there were vocals... Nicely done Jim.

cool
totally original take on this one. it's like Jims (not so) humble roots. the song is obviously great, but the touches you put all over this are taking it in a completely new direction. one that eludes me (cajun electronica?). really great rendition.

Gee thanks! and that goes for everyone!
I really liked this song when I was growing up, and this actually doesn't doesn't sound that much different to me than the Kingston Trio version that I remember from growing up, but it is paced a lot slower, I guess. That probably had something to do with just picking out some loops in Gb when I started out to work on this. There's one of those Atmospheric loops that had a clanking sound that reminded me of a prison work gang swinging sledgehammers and breaking rocks and I was thinking of that being an appropriate pace for this song. That loop got lost and I just have the vestiges of it in the marimba/tibetan bell simulation of the hang drum that I came up with. Cajun electronica? Maybe by way of Parchman Farm, but I wasn't thinking cajun about this. The banjo was meant to be more of a presence but I didn't get it just right when I first recorded this and I wasn't in the mood to try and re=do it. It's heavily echoed here so it comes in and out, but I thought it was just enough of a flavor of it to make it sort of lighthearted, which is what the banjo can be so good at.
anyway, here I blather on and give away all my secrets! Thanks for your comments!

and did you catch the slide banjo?
By the end of this 6 minutes, I was getting so bored when tracking the banjo, I stuck a slide on my finger and started playing slide banjo... hahaha

slide banjo?
good idea. used to play in a band with a guy who played fuzz bass with a slide and an ebow. i think it's the drum beat that reminded me of cajun music. just a hint though.

Quite a mix
of styles, indeed, with a country/folksy overtone.
Light, playful song. Fun !

Thanks Jim !

VERY cool
I grew up with the Kingston Trio version. I've never heard this selection of lyrics. Really dug it. Unique arrangement. Love it.

sounds of detached worry...
You get the fattest warmest sound out of whatever is your setup, Jim! Always gets me to a shade of green and satiated at the same time. My initial thought was to say that this has the truest of "folk" in it's ingredients, but like with most of your stuff, to me!, there's always big pinch of psychedelics mixed in as an ingredient that makes your sound, you. But mostly, it gives it that edge of interest that adds a full on whole other dimension to it's appeal for me. Feels silly to say, but, great writing and performing, Jim. Thanks for the free grab. Dion
ps. also, you always have exceptionally nice percussive stuff goin on and this knowing would be dominating my comment if it wouldn't have me stand out as having a shallow focus...

haha! detached!
Thanks for the comment. I guess I am saying in this song that since I'm not naturally one to worry, all this stuff despite how it bugs me in the moment, well, it's not going to bother me much in the long run...maybe my life is longer than the 99 years...

Certainly
a different 'take' on this song percussion-wise and it sounds great. I remember having Lonny Donegan's version in the sixties; a much simpler version than this one, regards M
