I'm Not Myself

Description
One of my favorite films is Ridley Scott's Gladiator. There's a particular line in the film where Maximus is praying and asks God to watch over his family with a 'ready sword'. I always thought that line was really cool, and it makes an appearance in this song, which I wrote and recorded the acoustic and vocal to during a particularly tough time a couple of months back. I finished it off today, adding synth, percussion and more some electric guitars.

Lyrics
I've walked all night
In the shadow of death
But I see light
I'm almost through
This valley has an end
and I'm alive

My Lord, my God
Beginning and the end
You lead the way
Your ready sword
Defending me again
You'll fight for me

I'm not by myself
I'm not by myself

I'm not myself
Until I am with you
I'm someone else

I don't want to be
Anyone but me
But I'm someone else

nice one
did you record the acoustic differently than you usually do? sounds a little more intimate on this one. what a melody, really great. love that guitar that comes in with the backup vox. and that synth; when did you become the synth master? just a big, beautiful piece of music. really outstanding.

acoustic
thanks michael. I had to EQ the acoustic a little differently because I got too close to the mic when I recorded it. good ear. the synth is something I created in GB - I think it's just a modified 'Arena Run' synth with chorus, track echo, auto wah, a ton of reverb and a vocal transformer on it. good fun

i think
that the acoustic sounds really nice. your regular techniques is awesome (and should be marketed as some sort of pre-set), but it's nice to hear something a little more small/lo-fi/cozy/fill in the blank with the adjective of your choice. makes me want to put some new strings on my acoustics and have a whack at recording them again (i usually shy away as I have had little luck with them).

Bad time to go deaf in my left ear
but from what I do hear - this is a pretty cool song Ridd. Definitely dig the lyrics (I can still read) but the finer details of the mix are lost to me at the moment. I am enjoying your playing and singing as usual - and the bell tone lead is pretty cool. Will come back when both ears are working.

hope it's only temporary! Have you seen the movie 'It's All Gone. Pete Tong'. If not rent it. It's about a DJ that goes deaf. SO good.
Thanks for listening despite your loss, kevin!

And the Zimmer/Gerrard soundtrack. But this is cool my friend. Love that crisp acoustic sound... and the vox is great!

Chord progression
Another excellent offering to the Macgods. Dare I say the intro might be a touch too long. I like latter half of this tune so much.

Very good tune Ridd

gladiator
i'm with Micheal, your acoustic is normally machine perfect and here it sounds immediately loose, which works given the intimate nature of the tune. REALLY like the synth work - creative/surprising and pretty.

ending solo is just HUGE, especially the way it kicks off, like a scream session after a prayer, sometimes it helps to do both no doubt.

the synth was a bit of an experiment. glad you think it worked. also glad you like the ending. this song is a rather schizophrenic in more ways then one

There
are some really, really interesting percussion choices. Interesting the best possible way. Woodblocks? Everything is top notch. You tackle faith in your lyrics in a subtle, but unabashed way. That's SO HARD to do. Many props for a great song with a wonderful message.

i stole the woodblock idea from radiohead. i forget which song but i was surprised when i heard them do it too. thanks for the props regarding the lyrics. that's exactly what i try to go for when writing about stuff like this. just trying to keep it personal and not too preachy. thanks for the congrats too! i didnt even notice!! cool

as i'm listening
i'm reading what everyone has had to say about this and they've all summed up my thoughts exactly. i have nothing new to add. this is a really great tune, ridd. aside from being just a kick-ass songwriter, your vocals are always so full of emotion. incredible.

thanks very much. i considered resinging this one because when I sang it I intended it only as a scratch track. i kept it though cuz it had a certain subtle something I knew i wouldn't be able to achieve if I sang it again. thanks again. always appreciate your reviews

Beautiful song
Mmmm... Wow... such nice melody and vocal .. and interesting lyrics.

My nitpick would be the recording of the acoustic guitar. I see you write that you got too close to the mic when recording it, so obviously there wouldn't be much that could help it apart from redoing the recording. If you'd ask me, I would recommend taking the time and job to do that. The song leans so much on the acoustic backing. And this is such a special song. It is a gem!

acoustic
hey thanks for the comments cori. Glad you like it. Is it the sound/tone of the acoustic that's not working for you or the playing itself? I'm not against retracking but I might be able to EQ it a little more.

The tone
It is the tone. Sounds like it was recorded through an old simple casette player with built in mics or something like that.

Yeah yeah
.. yeah yeah Radiohead blah blah, but this is all you man. Cracking tune with a stunning tone on that acoustic guitar. This is so radio ready it hurts.
Another of those tunes that would send me scurrying to fond the album. I even like the synth work (which is unusual for me).
Love it. Downloaded.

Imperfection feeling
Love the spontaneity of the voice. The "band" rounds everything later (great guitars at the end) but the imperfection feeling is still there in the guitar and the voice. Beautiful. Sounds so... fragile, human. What the song is all about.
Thanks for sharing it. I'll have it in my backpack to stand nights like that one.
