Foolsaint

Description
This is my 2nd Hang drum experiment and also, my 2nd piece inspired by Robertson Davies' "The Deptford Trilogy".

A Foolsaint, according to Davies, is a role model, or a figure in someone's life who is admired. This 'fool-saint' is a person that, in the eyes of the beholder, is a perfect person. "Blinded by love".

My goal with this piece was to create a sense of awe and majesty, but there is also a subtle dissonance throughout the piece - this person is merely human, not at all the saint you have made them out to be.

Thanks to magnatone, davisamerica and drakonis for their ears.

Ohhhh
Foolsaint. A wonderful word. It is like eidolon in some ways. I shall remember it.

The flow of notes is convincing. The arrangement itself is questionable. I wish that you had used more of those darker, introspective elements from the beginning – to hammer in the humanity and the paradox. I loved the beginning. I am haunted by it.

I sensed odd, festive vibes in the mallets that confused me. I don't know what you were imagining during those parts... May I ask? Maybe it's just not my feeling of choice. The beginning, for me, is Foolsaint. The rest is something soft, merry and floating that I cannot grasp.

Majesty... Majesty is so profoundly difficult to capture, like many feelings. It is my opinion that you have a long road ahead of you, but an empowered soul to make the journey. Majesty is peeking through the clouds. I think that you will attain your goal if you continue to seek out majesty.

Thanks for writing this piece. Listening has helped me.

Continuing from above...
The subtlety of movement... the way you economize sound but dare to explore certain tapestries of combination... your use of rhythm as something beyond mechanical and deeply internal.... all hallmarks of a really fine and developing composer!

Scope, depth and complexity
I so enjoy your exploration of each.

Shay
I think you captured what you set out to do really well. The hang drum, for such a new instrument, has such a lovely organic sound, don't you think? You've certainly got it in this one. Excellent.

My dear Shay - you've done it again! I've read the word "Majesty" used here, and agree it's very fitting. I love how you are developing your hang drum chops, and the way you have weaved them into sounds with this stunningly beautiful choir is just awesome. your gift for composition is stirring and inspiring. thanks for letting me in on this while it was in process. you are just amazing!

superlatives of superlative superness
Sorry, ran out of words up there. Gorgeous, Shay. The chorus is a tricky thing to get to sound realistic, and you did that here, sounds awesome (much improved over the first draft.) Excellent compelling rhythms, and those drums really ring, great mix! Mysterious and bathed in warmth.

One of my gripes....
...with synth based work over the years has been mixes that are flat, two dimensional. There's left, there's right, there's middle. There's loudish, there's softish.

What you've achieved here, kassia, is a mix that has a full spectrum. There's air, there's light and shadow, there's a sense of space and life...

The tonality of the drum is really alive, not something you'd sample and say, "This is the sound of that drum." There are as many sounds as there are taps or strikes...

I really enjoy this....

right then .....
when i saw the dragon in chat i knew your minor concerns would be worked out and i just continued to listen in awe to the rough draft. The first drat was just amazing but there is even more depth and life here and i stand amazed at what you have created. The sonics on the choir are beautiful and the drums ring with such power and clarity ...this shines shay.... goodness it shines. I love your description and the piece just wraps around it perfectly. "Quirky" ... no ... stunning and brilliant. Wonderful work here ...downloaded.

I believe
that the true heart of an artist is revealed in their art. It's simultaneously a blessing and curse; a blessing because those things that others cannot express an artist is able to release in their art. A curse because who you are is plain for everyone to see and... judge.

I judge this and all your other pieces to be both subtle yet bold. Light yet dark. plain yet beautiful. It all points to an artist of some wonderful complexity.

Thanks for sharing yourself in this way.

Awesome build...
Wow, I'm listening to this, and I just love the way it's starting out. Fantastic! The slow build up is great. What it builds up to, like Laverne said, is not what I expected. But still, I enjoyed where this song went. I definitely feel the awe and majesty you tried to evoke; that is no easy task! Well done.

Foolsaint
This actually reminds me a bit of Hans Zimmer's style of composing. I like your creative percussion. The ethereal chorus takes on an almost angelic persona - in my opinion you definitely captured "majestic". And, you did a good job of using dynamics to move the song along, good job especially since the movement is subtle and inconspicuous. Very nice smooth flowing piece of work, Shay. I very much enjoyed several listens.

What a gorges piece, the choir just sets it off for me, the inclusion of the hang drum gives it a bit of a world expression, but really the piece has a strong Epic feel for me, stunning work Shay, and I shall keep a copy as well..(Bravo)

I must say that
this is really rather good.Dramatic, cinematic and I suppose the drums have a slight militaristic element that conjures up ancient warrior civilisations or similar(awe and majesty)...the thing I like about music is that unlike a painting or a sculpture, which is what it depicts and cannot be other a piece of music can be many things to many different people.I do not know the "Deptford Trilogy" or Robertson Whatshisface but it don't matter ,the piece of work is a tune that stands by itself and the inspiration is an interesting footnote....There I hope that was sufficiently arty farty and most unlike me. Great piece, faved D'Ld 80)

Pleasantly awed by your sensitivity here.

Sounds like music that would fit as a nice soundtrack backdrop for one of those adventurous role-playing computer games, not unlike that prudiciously discussed Evony:

love the percussive elements
The bowls and bars and whatever they are are very expressive and give this piece its personality. Very beautiful. The ending is a little abrupt, but I am sure that you meant it that way as your music is filled with purpose and order as well as beauty.
Love it.

Nit to pick...
...This is way too short. I "get" the majesty...and want more of it. I echo many of the wonderful things that others have said above, especially noting that the ARRANGEMENT FULLY GRASPS the ideas you are trying to get across in the composition. You seem to have the soul that understands that "awe and majesty" you are trying to capture, and while, it's ultimately, probably impossible to grasp it entirely, I've seldom heard anyone get as close as you do here. Your orchestrating is taking on new and exciting dimension with this series and I'm enjoying it immensely. Brava!
Peace.
