Garden of Love (after William Blake)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I went to the Garden of Love,

And I saw what I never had seen;

A Chapel was built in the midst,

Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut

And "Thou shalt not," writ over the door;

So I turned to the Garden of Love

That so many sweet flowers bore.

And I saw it was filled with graves,

And tombstones where flowers should be;

And priests in black gounds were walking their rounds,

And binding with briars my joys and desires.

We love Wm. Blake!

Haunting song
especially the beginning - the voices coupled with the cello are really spellbinding. I expect this will get even better with repeated listens.

Garden of Love
wowza. This is some powerful stuff! I absolutely love that recorder coupled with the whispered lyrics and droning cello. What an eerie, haunting effect this has with Rebsie's absolutely spot on vocals and everything else bending in and out around her. Just brilliant.

This is cool!
I really like this one! I just love when musicians reach beyond the borders and still sound good. This one is awesome (to me).

Wow...
The two of you have captured the fearful awe of this short poem pretty effectively... Wonderfully full and on pitch and well phrased...

You might enjoy checking out Greg Brown's album 'Songs of Innocence and Experience'.... He does, at the very least, a moving version of 'The Chimneysweep'....

Your duo-hood is one of the wonderful surprises of this MacJams year...

It is amazing how many musicians have been inspired by Wm Blake ... will have to look out for the Greg Brown.

Many many thanks for your kindness in championing our new project, Ed. And for your nice words about our duo-hood - these comments mean a great deal to us!

dark garden
and i like dark and haunting. But then again when the song gets going Rebsie brings a ray of light. Sure gives a different twist to goth music.

Such a excellent and unique collection of songs that the both of you are bringing out.

Brilliant
As is Blake himself of course, not the least his paintings.

Excellent composition, with the haunting spoken word intro and the beautiful singing over deep chello "main". Enjoyed a lot and DL'd for many more listenings. Thanks!

Haunting
Sorry to steal some one else's line but it is the best way to describe it. Hints of danger and nightmares at the start before cascading into a gentle softness of slumber, but the dream never really goes away.

We appreciate your comment very much Smokey ... this is a kind of music that is not obviously 'accessible' but our hope is that it speaks very deeply to those who do get it. Your comment about tautness is spot on.

the whole business of man...
the change at 1:11 is magnificent but the whole is totally enthralling. The poem in itself is quite straightforward, but your take on it gives a kind of pagan melancholy.

I agree Blake is a quite fascinating, noble and unique character.

Lovely
Sp beautiful and so original. You captured the soul of the poem completely. I love the way your voices work together and I think I could listen to Rebsie sing "oh, oh, oh" all day. Like Peter, I will be listening to this multiple times. Thanks, guys.

Oh
I do love anything that attempts to capture the transcendent horror of William Blake. The first bit is my favorite, I must confess. I once spent a most salutary afternoon at Blake House in Lambeth; I even enjoyed the hand lettered plaque bolted high on the building. Has either of you been there?
I am so sorry it took me so long to get here (my loss not yours, I'm quite sure); and this is truly the highlight of my evening. Lovely voices, lovely sad Celtic-ness, too.

I'm so happy you made this!

Love,

MoM

Wonderful mood and atmosphere!
This is gorgeous and evocative of so many moods and places. Love the depth and breadth of it.... and I love Blake also. Great collab between you two and him! Love the cello work and the soaring vocals - also the reading by both of you in the beginning.

Fusion-y
Now that's a fresh approach - so many nice touches through this - the backing chorus, the weaving of the cello through the recorder against the vocal, the whispers.

This is so emotionally evocative on many levels. What a treat for multiple listens.

Brilliant work you two!
