Hill Country - Crazy Mule (Multi-collab)

Description
I posted an earlier version of this song that I did alone, for the MacJams Woodstock festival. I felt that this was a good candidate for enhancements, and by suggestion of Mungo Bill over at iCompositions.com, I asked Joe Gurner (jgurner) to add some backing vocals and I also asked my brother John (FEEL) if he would put some electric guitar on it. Thanks guys!

Joe Gurner: Backup vocals
John Luper: Electric Guitar
Harold Luper: Acoustic guitar, main vocals, drum loops, steel guitar loops and bass loops; mix

War sucks.

TO THE BONE...
This is STUNNING... excellent work, all of you! As I mentioned on a sneak-peek, this has a bit of a Neil Young feel to it, and the overall writing, structure, playing, singing, is just INCREDIBLE... Harold, John, Joe, you need to take a HUGE bow, and listen to 5 minutes, yes, 5 minutes of ecstatic applause erupt in the stadium after you play this.

Great mix, and although I still think Harold's voice should come up ever-so-slightly more in the main sections, that's my only suggestion... you guys completely NAILED this... John's guitar work (along with yours Harold) really creates an unstoppable napalm wave, and Joe's backing vox are ethereal and dead-on. Awesome, this will be the title track on your platinum album, guys!

ttfn,
Drakonis

sneak peak
Eduard, thanks so much for your help with pre-reviewing this; your honest critique is always invaluable. I is so great for a pure amateur and hobbyist as myself to have such a resource.

I agree my vocals get a little bit buried during the back-up vocal parts - I played with lowering the BU vocal levels, wasn't happy with that, then considered compressing and limiting mine. In the end, I left it alone... I need to spend more time playing with limiting and compression.

I agree with drak
Very nice. I think the vox should be up a tad more. I might even up the bass just a tad as well to round out the bottom (or even EQ it differently). Very nice recording. Good song! Thanks for posting.

Bass ick
Thanks Charles - funny, my brother actually told me that the bass was too high in this mix; I had to apply a limiter on it to get it up this high and keep the peaks from clipping the meter on that track.

As always, I appreciate the candid critique - I take it seriously.

Thanks again,

. - Harold

Real good....
A definite latter day Neil Young and Crazy Horse throb and thump to this, although with that steel guitar, too...

Adding Joe on those 'ooohs' was brilliant... reminds me of the Eagles' outro vocals on 'Outlaw Man'.... Randy Meisner, eat yer heart out....

War does suck....

What a production! Serious and great creation alltogether! The heavy groove you've produced here gives an excellent backing. Very professional. Thank you for a great download. Goes to my iPod!

By the way I dig this one more than I do most Neil Young songs. Seriously.

Kickin!
I hear that cowgirl in your Hil Country. I would definitely not boost the vox, everything's tucked in real tidy-like, and the era you've modeled doesnt call for it IMHO (and yours). Fine retro-tune, and a fine enhancement. GREAT unity in the band here. I didn't realize you and Tex were broze, HArold. Now it all makes sense. Talent runs...

bass octave
Hey Steve, was working with loops here on the bass. I had to transpose, and they sounded better down than up to me. Also, I get some weird sound artifacts transposing loops very much anyway, thus I need a bass player!!! (hint). I did want them down in the deep pocket, however.

Thanks for the comments.

Agreed
This is a winner! Great performances all around (those BV's are outstanding!), and I really like the pedal steel in there.

I'm listening on my laptop speakers (my preferred monitors these days....), and the vocal level sounds right. It's an interesting question, though. Ultimately, I think that when the mix is tight like this one is, any incremental changes would fall under the realm of 'fashion' or personal preference. I like it like this.

Great job all!

Really strong all around. Vocals are strong, and the backup vocals add to the track. All the instruments are sitting nicely in the mix.
