What Did You Do This Summer? - LioLi 9

Description
LioLi 09 - Man I love these challenges!

I've been busier this year than ever before (read below) so I'm deprived of my time at MacJams. I download songs as I'm alerted, but rarely have time to comment. I have been very lucky these last couple of weeks to be involved with Eric (Lennon714) and Craig (Tempie). Two amazing artists who share a common desire to control the world and sing songs about girls. We have 2 or more side projects amongst ourselves. If you're paying attention, you know what's going on.

Anyway, this tune is 100% factual and not even slightly exaggerated like I normally do to enhance the story. I had a very busy summer and the kids and I thought we'd do an art project with our list, but mine became a song - Thanks LioLi! Thanks MacJams!

Lyrics
I had some blood drawn from my arm
I bought a house, but I didn't buy the farm
I had a CT Scan
I didn't get a tan
I taught a Bible class
I Saw a doctor 'bout a mass

I met the FBI
He was looking for another guy
I got another scar
Swam at the Don Caesar
I bought a new iMac
I got stitches in my back

What Did You Do This Summer?
WHAT DID YOU DO?
What Did You Do This Summer?
WHAT DID YOU DO?

I broke a window crank
Drew a Sherman Tank
I mourned a man that died
And watched his wife as she cried
I even fired a chick
And she called me “dick”
I was born to win
So I took it on the chin

What Did You Do This Summer?
WHAT DID YOU DO?
What Did You Do This Summer?
WHAT DID YOU DO?

I SPENT A MONTH TRYIN’ TO LEARN HOW TO SING
THEN I REALIZED
IT’S NOT MY THING....

Eventful!
At least you know you're alive when it hurts, right? :)

Down in the Southern hemisphere, it's been a mighty warm winter. Time to get dressed for an early Spring.

Interesting musical arrangement on this track. Nice work.

Vocal Delivery Truck
I couldn't get the sound I like for the vocals - this is the first time I "sang" on the new iMac and I plugged a mic directly into the mic jack on the back of the mac. Has a tinny sound that I don't like.

Add it to the list of things I did this summer!

it is off hook
it is always off a hook with music of five extra arms. it is unconventional. it must be listened to. such captivating sound.

it is sad to see your summer filled with the chinese curse "may you live in interesting times." it is hoped that soon you may have some uninteresting times, and enjoy them. 0x0

Thanks icey

Unconventional. If I was Chinese, I'd wrap the cooking in the fortune, rather than a fortune tucked inside.

I hope to have some uninteresting times soon!

We did a lot of cool things this summer. Katy and the kids and I are too blame for such busy times, but we're all the better for it.

I miss this place, but I'll be back - things have to slow down sooner or later!

Hey Uncle bob
Hey dude, love the new song. the various riffs go together so nicely. Man have I been hankering for some new new 5EA/5XA music!

The song is 96% factual because of: "I SPENT A MONTH TRYIN’ TO LEARN HOW TO SING
THEN I REALIZED
IT’S NOT MY THING...." who?? wha??

I guess "summer events" is a big topic lately on MJ (I submitted my version weeks ago and am still awaiting approval)

Glad to hear the new one!

Massive
Speaking of favorite singers...

Hey Mr Nairobi- the mass was "not abnormal" as my doctor tried to explain. I asked, "So is it normal to have a lump here at the base of my spine?" and he said, "no".

CT Scan checked out ok, but I had some kind of dye injected into me. I didn't remember if it was iodine or some kind of radioactive stuff, so I left that lyric out.

at least, you'be been lucky to do things that rhyme together.

Unmistakably yours but has a slightly more reflective side than the usual upbeat 5X approach.

Well..............
Iz often said to write what you know, and this is as good as that gets. Hell of a summer serves up a hell of a tune, the supressed frantic tone of the synth loops and the growling relentless guitars perfectly frame that cocky yet casual, complex edgy sneer in the voice. Iz that you or iz it the tune?

Guys with 5 extra arms lead such interesting lives.

Thanks Mister,

glad you like the synths. I was really nuts about them myself. I love these challenges because you already have the inspiration to explore and that gives my loads of options.

Ahhhh, such an interesting and option loaded life of synth sounds I live!

It's Not My Thing
I figured it was a good lyric to include after my 2 songs dedicated to the singing lessons themselves. I laughed at myself with the dramatic dropping of the instruments at that point.

Who needs lessons when you have friends like you?

Thanks pal. You always support my "efforts".

This is like a musical version
of what we used to have to do every year when we went back to school in the Fall. Except this is way more interesting than most of the "Whqt I did this Summer" reports I've heard.

A very interesting take on the loops Bob, and well done, indeed.

Back To School
At the beginning of summer, I told my kids we were going to keep a list of all the things we did, anticipating the day they say, "We didn't do ANYTHING this summer". We'll I kept my list and added every little thing I did to it. I think the list became too long for anything useful, so I'm glad I was able to pick the best things off it to use in this song.

I had a guy from the FBI come to my office one morning. He wanted info on a former employee..... Actually the dude applied to the FBI and used me as a reference. I figure if big brother is going to be watching me, it might as well be by someone I know!

I wrote lyrics as well, and sung them, but singing is definitely not my thing either so nobody gets to hear. Your singing is FAR better than mine. Anyway, excellent take on this challenge. Thanks.

Summer Summer Summer Summer time
Will Smith has nothing on you. Literally. He hasn't placed a single thing on you. Bienvenidos a Valrico. Summer in Florida sounds like a dream. This is a very honest tune. I love it. There's an absence of robots and ray guns, which would normally be a turn-of. But there's still a good amount of humor. Just a pleasant and surprising change of pace. Well done!

Wall Of Booboo
Occasionally I get a Stan Ridgeway comparison. I stood outside a club in Koln once while he played. Maybe that's where it connects?

Either that or my love for pushing my face into (or out of) a bowl of baked beans.

I think you know what I'm saying.

the future is now
dude, musically this obviously looks back to late 70's early 80's electronica however its not derivative at all it actually sounds very much like what i hope the future sounds like. but, conceptually, its about the past. irony!

lyrically well, not to get sappy about my virtual friends but this is exactly what makes you so interesting and such a damn fine human being, the fact that you are tuned in to all the details but you don't miss the big picture. super cool tune, i'd say one of your best tunes ever.

this year, parenting two kids for the first time in my life! Not joking.
Concept of this reminds me of something I've heard a lot of time ago, by a guy called Colin Newman, former Wire. But your vocal style is very different and personal, so the result is quite original anyway. And I hear some good control of your voice, in spite of what you say about taking singing lessons :)
