An Echo Never Lies (LIOLI 9 Entry)

Description
As Ike and Tina said: "Here we go loop-de-loop!"

This is my virgin voyage in to the world of LIOLI. (ie, "Love it or Leave it", "Lick it or Lump it" or whatever the hell this thing is called.) Anywho, it was actually pretty fun.

I started Friday just after midnight and finished today, Sunday night. I decided from the get-go that I would use the required loop "as is" and simply build around it. I also wanted a short song (so that I wouldn't work on it forever) but I definitely wanted my song to have lyrics even though that is the element of the entire process I tend to labor over the longest. Nevertheless, after one false start of an idea (that I quickly jettisoned), I stumbled upon a loop that matched the required loop perfectly and I was off to the races. So other than some precision cutting and pasting, this bad-boy is all loops "as is." The only original parts are the vocals.

Enjoy.

Lyrics
An Echo Never Lies
by Demetrius P. Hill ©2009 All Rights Reserved

When the darkness comes no this is not the place to be
Have you ever sacrificed and made a choice for me?
Heathens never come to find the answers to their prayers
Shamen see an open door while others stop and stare

An echo never lies

Stuck now in a vortex of another place and time
Dwell here any longer and I'm sure to lose my mind
Gladiators turn to dust but they will never die
This is but a mismatch and I cannot fathom why

An echo never lies

Thanks Eli. I'm very happy with this song.
Having never done one of these LIOLI deals before, the one thing I knew was that I HAD to make a "song" complete with lyrics and a recognizable structure, just as I always do. And having not recorded anything in over a year and a half, there was no way I was going invest time in this challenge and not get a real song out of it. Thanks for listening.

nickels
at first i thought you said "a nickel never lies" and i thought "what a cool little turn of phrase" so imagine my surprise. but man i love it when somebody goes and does the unexpected, and this is not only unexpected but totally cool, and i normally don't like dark folk/dark prog, i'm more kind of a bright lights and balloons dude, but this is so interesting that the tone doesn't bother me. and that little bottle slide sounding solo is trick.

"A Nickel Never Lies"
That's hilarious. In the world of misheard lyrics, that's right up there with Hendrixs' "Scuse me while I kiss this guy." I'm usually a "bright lights" kinda guy a well, but I'm totally willing to go wherever the music takes me. Thanks for checking this out, I'm glad you dug it.

this is absolutely cool....
the lyrics and vocals are perfect and the sonic treatment on the sound bed is really working .... what a fantastic take on that loop!

I agree, that sound bed really is working.
Yes, I fell bass-ackwards into it, but that's the whole point of this exercise isn't it? Thanks for the compliment.

A tasty little take
You'd think by now that we would be sick of hearing this loop, even though it's been modified and manipulated and man/womanhandled in every conceivable way. But no! Along comes another goody like this. Thanks.

Hi Richard
It's pretty amazing how many different ways we all interpreted this one loop. I'm glad you enjoyed my take on it.

Great looping!
This is a great example of song writing with loops. The acoustic instruments are terrific. The production and the vocal all combine to make the whole a captivating song.

Yes, loops are a wonderful thing!
I've been using the occasional loop in my songs for a few years now so I was pretty sure I could build an entire song from them. I don't want to take too much credit for the production because it's hard to go wrong when you didn't record any of the instrumental bricks to build this house. I just had to make sure I didn't butcher the recording and production of the vocals too badly. Thanks for digging this.

Very interesting
LIOLI is always good for pushing you somewhere you normally don't go. The chorus sounds like you're covering sometheing from Either/Or, but not like you're robbing Smith of anything. Cool tune!

Love the way you intertwined the loops in this, but even more I love the lyrics, vocal, and harmonies you did on it. What an outstanding job this is my friend. Kudos to you

Yep -- all loops!
And no sonic funny business done to them -- only splicing. If you have GarageBand '09 then you have 95% of the loops I used. I'm glad you enjoyed the song and my singing. And do feel free to check-out some of my other chartbusters.

This one is wonderful as well. : )
And I really like that your songs are unique in that when you switch genres, each one.... I'm at a loss to describe it.... different is good because it shows musical range. Oh, heck, I don't know. Just know the lyrics are thought provoking, and the music really fit the mood the lyrics set. But what do I know - I'm not a musician - I just know what sounds good to me. : )
Slashh! said 2858 days ago (August 29th, 2009)
Thanks for your kind words
I'm glad you enjoy what I do. I just do songs man. I don't care what genre. I simply let the song tell me where to take it and I just go along for the ride. To me musical categories don't matter -- a good song is a good song no matter the genre. Thanks for diggin' it!

Very Strong
Love the lush, precise sound that sweeps along, whispering of regrets and missed opportunities and visions of past mistakes haunting us, growing sharper as we grow older.

Jeez, what did you put into this thing?

Beyond genius, you actually wove something genuine and substantial out of a goofy synth loop and didn't even need to hide it. Truly amazing stuff. Brilliant, demented and pure magic.
