Description
Lately I acquired a reel to reel tape recorder from a friend so that I could search my old analog reel to reel tapes for songs I'd recorded in my youth. Most have just that bit too much echo as most songs did at the time between the 1950's to late 60's, which is when my songs were recorded onto a Grundig TK20 Tape Recorder. This is the first song that I wrote in the early 60's(I was about 19 at the time)before I ever had an amp or a mic', and I'd completely forgotten about the song, until I heard it as I ran the tapes. It was the only thing I ever did that my father ever liked and was recorded directly into the tape recorder mic', using a cheap acoustic guitar which I had only just learned to play in C,G,F and G7. I was surprised at the clarity after all this time, as other recordings had deteriorated quite a bit.I've had to take the songs I've managed to retrieve into Audacity to clean them up and get rid of most 'hum'. It's one of the first things I ever played and recorded; I never wrote another song until I joined MJ, so please give this performance a little lee-way if you listen to it.

Yes Feter
I must have been 19, because I'd only just acquired the guitar from a lad i worked with in the factory. I swopped it for an electric razor LOL. Glad you liked the song, which I'd completely forgotten about, regards M

Amazed at the sound you recovered off those old tapes. You voice is crystal clear. The song is very good, too bad you couldn't of gotten a little more encouragement.

I too
was surprised Bill, because other songs I've found with echo and played through an Amp have deteriorated some; especially the guitar parts. Well I was nine when my Dad came back from the Navy and I'd only seen him twice up to then, so we didn't know each other and he didn't want to. I was just pleased that he liked it though. Glad you liked it too and thanks for listening, cheers M

So pleased you're not tired of listening to my voice LOL. Pleased too that you liked this and my vocals. Strange thing is, that I always wanted a vibrato, but never knew I had one at the time.... until now as i listen back, when it's deserted me, thanks a lot my friend, cheers M

Hi Len
Thanks for the nice comments..... and you know, in those days people just didn't have the access to studios, agents etc. that they do now. In fact it was quite rare for the average person to have a guitar or a tape recorder in the mid/late fifties and early sixties in the UK, regards M

So glad
you like this Buckhorn... it's definitely 'of that era' in style and as I said I'd forgotten all about it.... you're very kind too about the voice, as I just can't hold the notes as long, the vibrato is slower and it's a little deeper... but after 50 odd years, what can i expect LOL, regards M

WOW MO!!!!

You must be loving this - digging out the archive material is such a great thing to now be able to do. Converting to digital gives it such a new lease of life and new found longevity - no worries now about the tape deteriorating. And the world is now listening...

Your voice is great, very mature and you can still tell that it's you - you've not lost it at all, Mo! In the Malcolm Roberts / Vic Damone department for me and that's no bad place to be.

Here's an idea - maybe you could re-record it now, with all the hi-tech gizmos at your disposal. Would be an interesting project to hear the difference, no?

So glad you kept the older stuff, converted and posted this - I get a real buzz out of knowing the story behind this as I've been doing some cassette to mp3 conversion recently.

Thanks Mo - can we expect more 60s classics from the artist formerly known as Maurice Vizard?! Hope so...

Actually Jim
I found and am still finding it quite emotional going through these old songs especially since most are ballads; some of which I have absolutely no memory of having recorded or sung. It's a lot like looking through old family photo's only in sound, because all those times come rushing back.
As I said above the voice has lost it's freshness which is so apparent in these old songs. As regards re-recording them... I haven't got the breath any more.
If you or anyone else wants any of these songs, just PM me your email address and I'll send you some, but there's 'Maurice's songs' More Maurice' and 'Even yet, still more Maurice' LOL. Seriously I'll send you some if you want and they are very much you're kind of easy listening.
Big thanks for the Vic Damone reference; that's really made my day, Best regards Jim M

I did wonder how I'd manage to transfer them in this day and age and it turns out that the leads you get with white, red and yellow for transferring things to the TV, worked fine. I just plugged the red lead from the 'Monitor hole at the back of this borrowed tape recorder and the other end into my computer for GB and it worked fine. Audacity is a big help for getting the hiss and hum down too. Thank you for listening to this and pleased that you like it, cheers M

This thing is haunting. Misspent youth... Young people today are at such a disadvantage. There is nothing they can get behind emotionally. This on the other hand. This is real...

I agree Daug
young people have nothing to look forwards to in a sense, because it's all on a plate for them; there are no surprises any more for them, 'cause they've seen it all. I remember seeing that Grundig Recorder in the window of a large electrical shop and oh boy, did I want it. My Mother helped me save up for it and it took quite a while, but..... when I actually got it, I didn't know what to do with it except surprise people by recording them and then letting them hear themselves. The best part really was the wanting it and the saving up and looking forward to it. Today the kids want everything NOW. Again Daug, thanks a lot for dropping in to listen, that's very flattering, regards M

Holy cow!
This is amazing! Your voice at 19 was already fully matured and professional… As Charlie says, a bit like Roy Orbison's voice, and even a bit like Elvis (as he sounded in "It's Now or Never", an album I used to listen to as a kid). Truly spectacular singing! Did you take voice lessons, or did this come naturally? The ability to sing well perplexes me… I always wished I had it!

Well
to say that I'm wowed with your comments is an understatement.... great comparisons. I never knew at that time, or even until I listen now, so many years on, how I sounded. Though I remember a Church Choir Master even calling repeatedly at the house when I was quite young about 10yrs old, asking me to continue to be in the choir, but I didn't want to know at the time. He must have heard something in my voice, but alas he died in a climbing accident shortly after. Thanks so much though for that very flattering praise, though I think you should listen to the one I'm about to post ( My Yiddishe Momma') to see the difference 6 yrs made..... and I still wasn't singing professionally. These recordings were only for my own amusement so to speak. Thanks again Clark, regards M

There's only yesterday, eh? I am wondering if Elvis was one of your earlier influences. You may have been 19, but you had remarkable control of your voice, and there is that wonderful vibrato in your voice already! If I was lucky enough (or UNlucky, as the case might be) to come accross old recordings like this from my early years, I don't think it would be MJ worthy, to say the least, unlike this, which sounds just wonderful - you should, however, consider re-recording it today - wouldn't that be cool? Thank you for sharing this well aged cognac with us, Maurice.

Ha Ha Sigmund,
your very kind and I thank you for those lovely compliments. I don't think Elvis was even on the scene here in the UK then; it was more like Frankie Lane, Vic Damone, Eddie Fisher and Jo Stafford that I sang along to, but Andy Williams was always my favourite (still have his records) until the Everly Bros. came and took over, starting the new 'Pop' sound with 'Dream, Dream, Dream'. I was/am of course an Elvis fan of and all this 'young Roy Orbison and Elvis talk' is very flattering..... but too late do you hear? LOLOL (joking). That vibrato has slowed down with age now, like everything else.
I just might record another version come to think of it, though I think that easy sounding Falsetto ending might be missing LOL, kind regards M
