Weight of the World

Description
I'm going to need some cheese to go with this whine. This is a song I wrote in 2001. I had just broken up with my girlfriend (who is now my wife - you do the math). I remember thinking I was fine, but in retrospect it was probably the loneliest I've ever been. Boo hoo. I know. SPOILER ALERT: I tricked that girl in to marrying me after 2 years apart. The redeeming part of the song is the end where it gets a little lighter and kind of comes alive. Without the end it would be like a million other "woe is me" songs of mine.

So get out your kleenex and roll your eyes.

Lyrics
The weight of the world
No one speaks its language more than I
The weight of the world
No one feels its pain more than I

I don't mean to complain
Or sound as if life's so hard
'Cause I can see the sun through rain
Sprawling out across the yard.

The broken hearted songs
No one sings them louder than I
The repetitious life
No one plays the part more than I

I hope your not insincere
When you say you're on my side
Your motives just aren't clear
I can tell if you've lied

I don't want to wait forever
I don't want to wait forever
To hear you say "everything is forgiven"
To hear you say you love me again
To know that we have reconciled everything
To have you here lying in my arms again

Thanks, Feter
I had some funky noises going throughout the whole first part of the song that really made it trippy. Unfortunately, it was also very distracting. Thanks for listening!

A great serving of
Wah burgers and French cries. Nice chord progression and great tone in your vocals. The ending definitely lifts it to another place - cool arrangement.

Love the pic
Really like the Beatlesque (or more Beach Boys) thing that happens towards the end. It completes the song nicely.

where's my hankie? No, really cool tune my friend.

Hankie
I was going for a Beach Boys type thing. The 4 track version of this song ends no different than it starts. So I thought I'd mix it up a bit. Though I'm sure many people will get bored and move on before the end bit comes. Such is life, gangster lean, such is life.

ADD
Re: Many people get bored- Yeah, I hear what you mean. That's why a lot of mine tunes just jump into it. Today, you just got to grab the listener right away or they'll just jump away.
Post the 4-track! or do a funky remix or something with it.

Out the gates!
Sadly, the 4 track version doesn't sound a whole lot different than this. The end is the only real change and even my production skills haven't really increased that much. But maybe I'll throw some house beats and funk bass on it :).

Awesome
It's comforting to know that no matter what I do I'll never be as cool as you...and violets are blue.

Great song. Does Renee like it?

Good question
I'm not sure how she feels about the song. I'll see what she says tonight. I think she'd really like a traditional tune, but my favorite love songs always have elements of pain so you get that in my love songs.

love it
a great addition to my eric vanausdal playlist. sure it's a 'woe is me' song, but it's from an honest place, so it's okay. great piano bits and yeah, the ending is awesome. now, i gotta find that star wars rock show poster for my basement corner

Star Wars
I knew either you or 5EA would dig on that pic. I can't tell what R2 is up to, but I'm dying to know. The song is kind of embarrassing because so many people in this world have real problems. It's stupid for me have ever written those words. Even if it was hyperbole for a song's sake.

Nice find!
Wow. I don't even know rockin' the PA is. Unless he's rocking a Prince Albert, which opens up all kinds of possibilities. I was thinking he was up against a Marshall cab just a-beepin' and-a whistlin'and creating some interesting feedback. Like a 3 foot Jimi Hendrix, but somehow cooler.

awesome sadness
I'm sure everyone has written a sad break up broken down song, but just won't admit it.

I really like the chord progression and melody. the charged up ending is awesomeness at its best.

cool track Eric!

I think the chord progression is one reason this song seemed like a good idea to re-record. It's not groundbreaking, but I liked it to. Perhaps I'll fav this song. Nah. Thanks, Vic!

cool
no eyerolling here, just admiration for a killer song.
in particular, the end part of the song is absolutely sublime.
the front part of the song is cool too. I would have liked to hear a little more on it though, like maybe more piano and/or another instrument... maybe more of a build to, or even brief foreshadowing of the payoff at the end... could make a great song mindblowingly good, but that's just my opinion...
as always I'm impressed by your songwriting skills....

Killer Diller
Thanks! I had some ambient droney noises in the beginning but it felt forced or out of place. The other reason the first part is so naked is because it makes the ending sound more sparkly than it really is. You know Elliott Smith's "2:45 AM" off of Either/Or? The drums and bass kick in right as the song starts to fade out. When I first heard that I was like "Damn! that should have kicked in after 30 seconds, not 2 minutes!" Then after a while I admired him bucking convention like that. So though this song owes nothing to Elliott sonically, I've always kind of dug how that song went down.

Wow. I'm wordy. Anyway, I also think you're right. Maybe a sneak-a-peak of what's to come would be kind of cool and round the song out as a whole. Let's not lose sight that I really have no idea what I'm doing :).

Elliott smith - can't argue with that
You're right about bucking convention...

woe you

for me, that's when the tambourine and the harmonies kicks in that everythings falls into place beautifully.

what's wrong with this picture ?

relic 67: "I probably would have been one of the people booing Dylan at Newport". That would be one killer lyric.

I may sing like Christopher Lucifer, but I like tambourines and sunshine. That would be a killer lyric. Although I really love Dylan, I love the idea of people taking pride in shutting down music snobs. It's like Mojo Nixon's diatribe against Morrissey in his cover of "Girlfriend in a Coma". Not that Relic was pushing thumb against music snobs. Or whatever. Relic? Am I still talking?

Sad but true
to the spirit of lost love.

We've all been there, we've all written about it, and we all think our feeling on display are sappy.

But sharing is what music is all about, and you did a great job at that Eric.

Nice ballad my friend.

that image IS awesome...chewie on drums? Come on!
man the piano is great. it picks the tune up and makes it honest in a way I can't explain. also the music box/xylophone sound at the end is fantastic. mopey tunes have a place dude, think about "in my room"...especially mopey songs that lift you up in the way that this tune does. great song man, it's on the ipod to help me ease back into work.

I so badly want to hear the song they're playing. It looks like it's rocking the hell out of the outer rim territories. Thanks for listening. Any new ones from you coming down the pipeline?

Mellow....
... that acoustic is just right man, with your classic vocal style over it, the piano arriving in the off ear, beautiful. Great lyrics too. The lead out is fantastic with the layered vocals and the plinky plonky xylophone.
Great tune man. Downloaded and iPodded.

Honest and vulnerable
It's always interesting how we compose around what is true for us in that moment and then later want to cover those feelings up by feeling like taking the song off MJ or not performing it again or saying it is no good or whatever.

This is a great ballad that rings true and uncontrived. The ending is such a brilliant layering of hope and rays of sunshine on the more minimalist and intimate feel of the main parts of the song. Nice production too BTW. A Dload for sure.

All the best,
Doug

Love the poster too....you can just tell Luke is using the force.
