Description
This is a song that's on my first album "The Return of the Well-Known Trout" which you can get on iTunes. It's one I never posted on here. Originally recorded on four track cassette and then remixed on digital and remastered by Tommy Wahl of Wahl of Sound in Germany.

It's pretty self explanatory. No hidden messages. Boy meets girl, boy pays for girl, girl goes away, boy left alone moping about it.

Thanks to the Greenwich Village photo web site for the photo.

I hope you like it.

Lyrics
The Darkness of the Night

She lived outside of dog town
Where all the people saying
The Star Spangled Banner
Whenever it begins to rain
She never had much money
Her pockets never deep
She found ways to make a living
While other people sleep

Met her on a Sunday
We kissed in the hall
Saw her on Monday, That was all
She never said she loved me
She never said she cared
She never told me she would tear up my heart and throw it in the air (just for fun)

What about love? In the afternoon light
What about love? In the darkness of the night
What about love? as the clouds chase the sky
What about love?

Dreamt of her on Wednesday
When I touched her cheek
She rode away on a moonbeam forever and of reach
I never called her honey
I never knew her name
The only thing that's funny is I'd pull out my hair and do it all again (just for fun)

What about love? In the afternoon light
What about love? In the darkness of the night
What about love? as the clouds chase the sky
What about love?

Very cool
Enjoyed this one. A bit of a Tom Petty sound here. Quirkier song writing though. I like the backing track. The only suggestion i have on this is to turn the bass guitar up more. I think a bass driving the song would make it flow better and fill it out. Great job.

Quick on the Draw
I saw you listed as a fan and just responded, but thanks for commenting also.

I goofed. There is no bass guitar on this song. I played an acoustic bass setting on the Roland Workstation. I wasn't getting good quality when recording a bass guitar on the old crappy Fostex, so I went with the Roland.

Darkness of the Night
This is amazing my friend ..the world jazzy
percussion pattern with the slide so so solid..
and gives the air for the vocal ...amazing ...
thnx alot for sharin !!!!

Thanks Feter!
As always, thanks Feter for your kind words. You are correct about the percussion I used in this song. They were a group in the Roland that were named World or African patterns. I don't remember which, but they were the inspiration for the song. I really liked the drums, wrote the organ part and then went from there.

Thanks again.

I like the song
I would have liked to hear the second verse build with more instruments or backing tracks... sort of a different sound.

Yes bass would be nice... more of it at least. I like the song a lot and I love the vocals... sort of reminds me of Mark Knopfler vocals sort of.

Thanks Mark
One of the dangers in recording on the old four track was getting too much stuff on there and it started sounded mushy. One thing I could do is to go back and run this through Garage Band as an mp3 and then add some stuff.

Thanks again. I'll go listen to Bleeding Ears.

Echo...
...the other comments about bass...But I really like the percussion track throughout. It keeps my attention and is a tasty addition to the mix. (At 2:00 -- wonderful chord! Surprising.) ... I also think your mix is so very clean, esp. considering the process you mention in your notes. Your vocal is, thankfully, very clear and out front where it should be.(guitar lead at 2:40 -- nice!) This is a very solid song and expertly mixed. Enjoyed it very much, indeed.
Peace.

Thanks Paul
I appreciate your comments very much. The chord is a diminished, F#, if I remember correctly. I did like the way the guitars turned out and liked the crunch I got on the leads during the chorus.

Thanks again for coming by and commenting. I'll give a listen to "I Wonder."

Night in the Village
Like the groove, percussion, and slide parts. Reminds me a little of Mink DeVille and his downtown Latin soul/rock. Great lyric and chorus.

Although I probably have heard Mink DeVille at some time, I can' say I'm very familiar with him. Other than that, thanks for coming by and giving a listen and a comment.

I'll listen to "Boot Dragger's Waltz." Good title.

Moviz in the House
Thanks, M for coming by and listening. Much appreciated.

Whenever I do a slide guitar, which isn't too often, my first thought is George Harrison. The tone reminds me a little of some of Bonnie Raitt's work. Just the tone, not the playing.

Thanks again. I'll go listen to "Then There Were Four." I just found Scofugate yesterday and was very impressed with his stuff.

Loved the guitar work and great use of percussion.

Thanks, Dick
The vocal and organ owe a lot to Knopfler. If the guitar playing approaches his excellence I would be honored, and amazed. He's one of the best.

Thanks for coming by and giving a listen and a comment. Always good to hear from you.

Darkness
sorry to be so late to this great tune! i've read the other comments while listening, i agree about the bass being turned up a bit, and mark's idea for a second verse build is really good too i think. i guess that means i have no original ideas to offer :) but i thoroughly enjoyed this very fine song - thanks!
